...Contribution and Diversity Questions Your background, experiences, and values will enhance and diversify Kellogg. How? (1-2 double-spaced pages) The Darden School seeks a diverse and unique entering class of future managers. How will your distinctiveness enrich our learning environment and enhance your prospects for success as a manager? Every essay question on the admissions application is geared toward the same thing. Committee members want to find out who you are, what makes you different from everyone else, and how you will contribute to the school if accepted. This question asks these things outright. Because it asks so directly what the admissions committee wants to know, this is one of the most common questions you will find. The question has a structure similar to the Why M.B.A.? question. It asks both Why us? and Why you? However, the nature of this question lends itself to a more personal response. Whereas the Why M.B.A.? question asks what you have done, what you want to do, and how that relates to the school, this question asks about who you are and how it relates to the school. The Why M.B.A.? question asks about your experiences, and this question asks about your qualities. Just as you brainstormed about your experiences, actions, and goals for the first question, brainstorm about your qualities and characteristics for this one. What sets you apart from everyone else? What words do friends and family use to describe you? For some people, the focus...

...Criterion SM Online Essay Evaluation: An Application for Automated Evaluation of Student Essays Jill Burstein Educational Testing Service Rosedale Road, 18E Princeton, NJ 08541 jburstein@ets.org Martin Chodorow Department of Psychology Hunter College 695 Park Avenue New York, NY 10021 martin.chodorow@hunter.cuny.edu Claudia Leacock Educational Testing Service Rosedale Road, 18E Princeton, NJ 08541 cleacock@ets.org Abstract This paper describes a deployed educational technology application: the CriterionSM Online Essay Evaluation Service, a web-based system that provides automated scoring and evaluation of student essays. Criterion has two complementary applications: E-rater®, an automated essay scoring system and Critique Writing Analysis Tools, a suite of programs that detect errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, that identify discourse elements in the essay, and that recognize elements of undesirable style. These evaluation capabilities provide students with feedback that is specific to their writing in order to help them improve their writing skills. Both applications employ natural language processing and machine learning techniques. All of these capabilities outperform baseline algorithms, and some of the tools agree with human judges as often as two judges agree with each other. 2. Application Description Criterion contains two complementary applications that are based on natural language processing (NLP) methods. The scoring application, e-rater®, extracts...

...The Intelligent Essay Assessor: Applications to Educational Technology Peter W. Foltz, New Mexico State University Darrell Laham, Knowledge Analysis Technologies Thomas K. Landauer, University of Colorado Abstract The Intelligent Essay Assessor (IEA) is a set of software tools for scoring the quality of essay content. The IEA uses Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), which is both a computational model of human knowledge representation and a method for extracting semantic similarity of words and passages from text. Simulations of psycholinguistic phenomena show that LSA reflects similarities of human meaning effectively. To assess essay quality, LSA is first trained on domain-representative text. Then student essays are characterized by LSA representations of the meaning of the words used, and they are compared with essays of known quality in regard to their degree of conceptual relevance and the amount of relevant content. Over many diverse topics, the IEA scores agreed with human experts as accurately as expert scores agreed with each other. Implications are discussed for incorporating automatic essay scoring in more general forms of educational technology. 1. Introduction While writing is an essential part of the educational process, many instructors find it difficult to incorporate large numbers of writing assignments in their courses due to the effort required to evaluate them. However, the ability to convey information verbally is an important educational achievement...

...Writing Your Graduate School Application Essay Generally speaking, there are two types of application essays for graduate school: the statement of purpose (SOP) and the personal statement. (Refer to FAQs to find out how the two types are different.) Both types let you convince the admissions committee that you are a good fit for the program and can contribute to the department. Although different graduate schools may ask you to answer different prompts, most ask that you write no more than a two-page application essay. The application essay is difficult to write because you must pitch your candidacy to a few department faculty members who read through hundreds – or sometimes thousands – of other essays. In this handout, you will learn how to show these busy readers that you will contribute meaningfully to the university and their department. 1. Relate your past and present experiences to the future. In their application essays, many applicants make the mistake of underemphasizing the future. But it’s important that you show how your past experiences have informed your present work, and how your present work can be extended to the future or raise new research questions. Admissions committees assess many qualified applicants based on whether their research will reflect positively on the university and their department. Committees will think your past and present work is relevant only if it relates directly to your plans for the future. If you don’t know exactly where your current...

...Application essay My love for music began when I was around 14 years old, an age when i’m not yet understand every aspects of music like pitch, tone, rhythm, notation, but only the music itself. I was compelled by how music affects our heart and soul, how it can expess feelings words normally can’t. But mostly I’m interested in how to create such music that can moved people just by listening to. My passion in music grows ever stronger. But as much as I love it, pursuing music is not something that can be easily done. It’s a long and rocky road from listening to others’s music to producing our own. So many people have failed before. However, after doing much research about colleges that have a music composition program. I believe that the Contemporary Writing and Production Program in Berklee College of Music is the ideal starting place for me to chase after my music career. Music played a major part in my youth. My father used to play his piano smoothly every night before bed, and I would sit next to him, listening quietly. Every time I listened to his music, i always have such beautiful dreams at night. It really fascinating me how simple melody can deal major impact to our mind. Inspired by my father, i led a small music band later on in high school. We practiced day after day, learned many new techniques from each other. Our small performances at the tea houses, sidewalk, local park, even school concert, give us a lot of fun time and invaluable experiences. We once won...

...Application essay Modern information technologies are changing and developing so fast that it is impossible to remain a good specialist without broadening your knowledge and getting new experience all the time. Moreover, dealing only with already existing technologies and media formats is not enough. It’s obvious to me that to build a successful career I must search for new solutions and be able to predict what will be happening in the industry and how I will be able to use new achievements in my professional activity. The Emerging Media and Communication program deals with media of the future and provides its students a possibility to be prepared for future evolution of media and its results. As a successful specialist in existing systems and technologies, I see my future professional development in managing emerging media and getting theoretical basis for their development, implementation and work in this field. That is the main reason why the EMAC program fully corresponds to my personal and professional goals. In my opinion this program will help me to think deeper, find new opportunities and chances to use my skills and knowledge in new spheres of activity. ...As I open my cabinet, a pile of certificates of merit come into view and the first certificate that I got in the Beijing Desi group dance competition when I was 6 years old brings my memory back to the past days. Having a strong interest in dancing, I began to learn it when I was three years old. At the moment when I had the first certificate of dancing in hand, I was so happy that I believed I will become a good dancer one day, dancing with people to the music. Since my parents were too busy to play with me, I didn’t go home where there was only me, but rushed to the dancing practice room after school. The practice room was just like my home, and I studied and practiced dancing there until very late. Everyday, my mother picked me up from the dancing room to home. It was in my third grade when a girl was transferred to my class. Since her parents were also busy, she companied me till night to wait my mother to pick us up. Every time she saw me practice dancing alone in the dancing room, she came in and took me to play with other students. At the very beginning, the other students didn’t like me because they thought that I was all alone and I wouldn’t get along well with them. They refused to play with me and I had to stay alone again. In the first few weeks, she just came to the dancing room and played with me as long as she found that I was not playing with others. “Let’s go and play”, I said to her but she always said nothing. But one day after a month, she found me and said:...

...Upon review of my application, you may have three questions which stand out. Instead of “ignoring the elephant in the room,” I’d like to address these concerns you may have: 1. Why did I attend so many colleges? You’ll note, I started at BYU, then transferred to Dixie State University, then Utah Valley University, followed by Salt Lake Community College, and lastly, University of Utah. Trust me, this was not by design. After my 1st year at BYU, I went home for the summer . . . and let’s just say, “I met a boy.” I probably needn’t say more, but I’m compelled to do so. I deferred at BYU to remain home fall semester and attended DSU. The next semester, I returned north for schooling; but, enrolled at UVU because I discovered I could be a practicing...

...Over the years I've been very involved in my church in areas such as; helping where I am needed, teaching third grade Sunday school, and going on mission trips to Port Saint Joe, FL and Spain. Being active in my church has intensified my compassion for serving and has also played a significant role in the career path I have chosen. Based on my interest in health and science paired with the love I have for helping others, I want to be a Pharmacist. I will be interacting with people regularly and I'll have the opportunity to establish relationships while creating a positive atmosphere. Nothing makes me more happy than to think I can serve others by supplying them with the medicine while providing the encouragement that everyone deserves to hear. My dilemma is my financial and family situation. Neither of my parents went to college, and my dad hasn't expected me to go either. Throughout my life my family has constantly struggled financially, as a result, I have become very familiar with living paycheck to paycheck with nothing to spare in between. My parents got a divorce which increased the difficulty of our financial situation. I realized before high school that if I wanted to go to college and have a better outcome than my parents, I would have to do it myself. From the time I started high school I made it a goal that school would be my highest priority and I would give my best to accomplish any task that was handed to me. Between sophomore and junior year I decided that I wanted...

...I've been fascinated by music ever since I could pick up an instrument. From the intricacy of a carefully crafted jazz piece, to the hard hitting double bass blasts in a metal song, I can find something to enjoy in almost every form of music. It takes so many different shapes, I can easily fit different songs and genres to accent whatever mood I may be in. Sometimes, I have had people laugh at me when I admit that a certain song or solo has given me shivers or brought me to tears. Other times, the person I'm talking to is able to understand and feel the same emotional connection to a piece or song that I do. In order to better understand and appreciate the music I loved so much, I started playing the clarinet in fifth grade. The clarinet is what originally slingshotted me towards my passion for music performance. It also brought me closer to other people who enjoyed music just as much as I did. I practiced as often as possible throughout middle school, and enjoyed every minute of it. Continuing into high school, my growing interest in music theory (as well as a stellar performance from my school’s drumline) influenced me to venture into the world of percussion. I started working to improve my percussive abilities every single day. I bought a drum pad, and went through many pairs of sticks over the course of the year. Eventually, it all paid off, and I made it into my school’s drumline as a snare drummer. I further continued with my percussion progression by joining the jazz band...

...It all started my sophomore year. I was young, undersized and hadn’t gotten the chance to make a name for myself yet. I remember it like it was yesterday, the first meeting we had with the varsity football coach. The first time he would be able to get a look at all the sophomores moving up and give his input on what he thought would develop us into a varsity football player. I was sitting kind of in the back and he had gone through several players telling them what he thought and finally got to me asked my name and position I gave him my name and said “quarterback and defensive back” for my positions and he just looked at me for a second, almost looking right past me like I wasn‘t going to be able to contribute anything the team and said “You need to get in the weight room and get bigger and stronger. You’ll never physically make it through a varsity football season at your size.” I don’t know how this would make other people feel, but I am not the kind of person who likes to be told that I can’t do something for any reason, especially because I’m not big or strong enough. By that statement, my coach lit a fire inside me and made me angry. The next Monday after the meeting with coach I was in the weight room working out, going at least three days a week and continued to do so throughout the school year and even through the summer. Me, not being the strongest kid ever, there were a couple players who were approaching their senior season who started working out with me, which...
