... open Media Web." Songbird utilizes the cross-platform frameworks, Mozilla's XULRunner and GStreamer media framework, and is largely capable of running on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Solaris and Linux. The user interface of Songbird is similar to that of Apple iTunes. It also supports syncing its music library to iPods. Hence, many people have started using Songbird as an alternative to the closed source and bloated iTunes. Songbird can be downloaded from http://getsongbird.com/ User Stories: While Songbird has robust music library management, and can import the files on your hard disk to this library, it lacks the feature of importing songs from the iTunes library. This deters many new users from switching over to Songbird, because they fear losing their play count, “starred” songs, and stored metadata like lyrics and album information. Essentially all this information should be stored with the audio file itself, by making use of ID3 tags. iTunes, however, chooses to maintain this information both in its proprietary “itl” format, and as an XML file. To ease the transition for new users, Songbird should support importing from the user’s iTunes library. The other limitation of Songbird is that it can’t connect to, or use, songs from the Apple iTunes store. Many iTunes users have already purchased a lot of songs from the iTunes online store, and not being able to add or play this music in Songbird is a major drawback. In addition to the iTunes store,...

...TABLE OF CONTENTS. ACKNOWLEDGMENT INTRODUCTION TO SCHOOL RESOURCES CENTRE. The term School Resource Centre (SRC) emerged in Malaysian education since 1st May 1983 when the Ministry of Education directed all schools to use this term instead of school library. The directive was issued to signify the variety of SRC’s collection which not only limited to printed materials but also other formats including audio visual collection. Doucette et. al (1999), defined SRC programmes as consisting of planned learning activities which support the school curriculum and contribute to the development of life-long learners. In addition, Loertscher (2000) suggested that an ideal SRC programme is built on the foundation of an information infrastructure that includes materials, equipment and facilities, and direct services to students and teachers. He further identified four areas of SRC programme that needed to be given attention namely collaboration, reading, enhancing learning through technology, and information literacy. The Government of Malaysia has put a lot of emphasis on the development of human capital in the Ninth Malaysia Plan. The Malaysian Ministry of Education, in turn, has taken further steps including the creation of smart schools, empowering the national schools and the setting up of school clusters. As such, schools are seen as the institution responsible for realising the nation’s aspiration of building a new generation with creative, innovative...

...OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LIBRARY RESOURCES AND SERVICES IN SUPPORTING RESEARCHERS’ INFORMATION NEEDS Arinawati Ayob Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut Universiti Sains Malaysia 11800 USM Pulau Pinang ABSTRACT As one of the supporting departments of a university, the academic library plays an important role in providing essential information resources and services to the researchers. Changes in information technology have impacted libraries due to changes in the format of information resources and the information seeking behavior of users. Technology has transformed the way researchers seek, obtain and use information. Libraries therefore need to critically examine the effectiveness of their services in fulfilling their researchers‟ information needs. An assessment of the effectiveness of library services has been conducted at an academic library based on selected criteria in four domains stated in the literature; 1) resources 2) services 3) library/stakeholders interactions and 4) access. The result from the survey has provided ideas about the strengths and the weaknesses of the library services from the perspective of researchers. The research also studied the relationship between demographic characteristics and library activities of the researchers and their perceived effectiveness of the library services in supporting their information needs. Keywords: Library Assessment; Outcome Assessment; User Studies; Effectiveness of Academic Library; Researchers‟ Information...

...The Library Ergonomics of the Automated Workstation of the Library Staffs in Angeles City Remedios DL. Baking Holy Angel University Graduate Department Library Science February 2008 Abstract The library is considered an important educational system in which the library staffs are the key persons in the provision of unquantifiable information services to library patrons and community of users. Poor working conditions affect the physical well-being of the library staffs. In line with this, the researcher attempted to find how the workstations of the library staffs and workers of the seven (7) academic institutions and eleven (11) schools institutions in Angeles City are ergonomically designed. The researcher used the descriptive method and inferential statistics such as T-test to check the significant differences between the library ergonomics of the academic and school institutions and also percentage distribution and weighted mean of the responses of the research respondents. Findings of the study showed that library staffs in both academic and school libraries were not fully ergonomically aware on the different physical factors that strain their bodies when staying in their workstation. The respondents indicated uncertainty on the comfort they have on their workstation. They also indicated that they experienced less stress on the eyes but they experienced much pain on the wrist and neck. These pains that were brought by the unergonomic...

...of projects Over the last eight years as a Library/Information Technician, I had to use proper judgment on a daily basis while working in this field. As being a technician for the library, you are expected answer routine reference inquiries in person, email, chat or by phone. I have to guide patrons in finding and using library resources, including reference materials, audiovisual equipment, computers, and electronic resources. Review subject matter of materials to be classified, and select classification numbers and headings according to classification systems. While staffing the public service desks, respond to the public’s informational and recreational needs using a variety of sources, formats and equipment, and determining the services, collections and areas of the library that will fulfill those needs. Review and resolve complaints and complex problems. Also, make recommendations on library materials selection. Functioned in an environment where stress occurred with some regularity such as project work, special assignments, or seasonal peak periods. Work efforts and/or successful completion of project/assignment resulted in the resolution of complex issues in situations having urgency, high visibility, or specifically desired outcomes of significant importance to others. Throughout these efforts, consistently responded in a professional and calm manner. At the University of Maryland-University College (UMUC), Library Technician III (Electronic Reserves), I had to...

...Project Management Case Studies These case studies represent a range of projects in different libraries. They are all based on real events. The participating librarians were asked to provide details of projects within the headings used in the case study template which is located at the end of this document. Each case study is presented using these headings to enable the reader to make comparisons between the projects but there is some slight variation of style and detail. Although some editing has been done by the writer of these learning objects, the intention is to retain as much of the individuality of each project as possible. Brief conclusion and analysis is provided at the end of each case study by the writer of these learning objects. Several of the projects are ongoing at the time of writing. This partly reflects the nature of projects in ILS whereby they run parallel to mainstream service delivery. This offers real challenges for those involved and especially for the project leader who will continually need to prioritise the tasks, commitment and speed of working towards completion. None of these projects have been submitted by or directly involve senior managers. Although most have some approval and reporting to senior staff, these projects are managed by professionals in the middle management strata of their organizations and involve different grades of staff or volunteers. Senior staff are less accessible than middle managers and would probably claim to...

... the level of digital library development in Malaysia, the research questions, the limitations and the scope, the researcher felt the appropriateness for adopting both the qualitative and quantitative data gathering techniques i.e. the survey method, using the questionnaire as the instrument and supported by qualitative data obtained through structured interviews. A combination of these research design helped provides more data to work with and ultimately a more accurate evaluation (O’Neill, 2006) and according to Hemming (2008) human geographers were also increasingly employing both approaches in their research. Another reason for adopting both qualitative and quantitative data gathering techniques was that since there had been little documentation on the subject matter, it was therefore important to get to the source of primary information so that each method could complement and substantiate the other and making the findings more concrete. In short, the strengths of qualitative studies should be demonstrated for research that was exploratory or descriptive and that stressed on the importance of context, setting, and participants’ frames of reference (Marshall and Rossman, 2006). The objectives of the study were to identify the extent of readiness of Malaysian libraries in providing digital library operations and services, having embraced library 131 automation, including problems faced that included both general library problems and digital library related problems and more...
