What makes a top 100 hospital?
Johns Hopkins Medicine

HSM310 Introduction to Health Services Management
11/18/13
Professor Hastings

2 There are many factors involved in deciding what makes a top 100 hospital. Not only is it about great patient care, low mortality rate and safe procedures; but a hospital also needs to be able to function financially as well. The healthcare industry is a business as well as a medical institution. Since the health care field is always changing, medical facilities need to be up to date on the latest medical breakthroughs and have the ability to research new techniques. Johns Hopkins Hospital, based in Baltimore, Maryland, is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the “health of the community and the world” (hopkinsmedicine.org.) Johns Hopkins, in a population of 1.5 million people, was a philanthropist who wanted to give back to the community by setting higher standards of healthcare. In his will, Johns Hopkins included his desire to construct not only a hospital, but a university as well (The Biography Channel, 2013). He was a firm believer in furthering ones education in the hope of finding cures for all diseases. This concept of marrying medicine and education is referred to as Johns Hopkins Medicine. Johns Hopkins Hospital has been ranked the #1 hospital in the country for the past 21 years, and is still going strong (Auerbach, 2013). US News evaluated over 5,000 hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities. The research was done according to specialties, areas, and the best trained doctors. The rankings take into account the death rates, reputation of the hospital and patient safety. This data also reviews patient satisfaction as well as employee moral (Leonard, K.),(Comarow, A., 2013). Johns Hopkins Hospital is part of a

...May 30, 2015 HSM 320 Professor Lori Janello Application Paper Professional Liability Medical malpractice has been an issue of concern in the provision of health care for thousands of years (Young, C. C., & Williams, D. R. 2011). There may be a perception that doctors are held responsible for the majority of medical malpractice lawsuits, the reality is that nurses are often finding themselves defending the care they provide to patients. “Negligence, which is often an unintentional action, occurs when a person either performs or fails to perform an action that a reasonable professional person would or would not have performed in a similar situation.” (Fremgen, 2012). Since I work in a hospital and have the privilege of working closely with nurses on daily bases, I decided to discuss ways nurses can be held liable for negligence. Nursing malpractice occurs when a nurse fails to skillfully perform her/his medical duties and that failure brings harm to a patient. There are different ways that a nurse can harm a patient, from failing to inform a doctor when something is really wrong with a patient to administering the wrong medication. Like malpractice involving physicians, nursing malpractice happens when a nurse does not fulfill his/her duties in a way that a skilled colleague in another location would do in the similar situation, and that negligence injures the patient. In nurses malpractice cases, often the key issue is who is liable for the nurse’s illegal...

...Zach Shook Professor Donaldson PSY 210 13 October 2013 Application Paper The movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, was centered around a man named Randle McMurphy who was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital against his will. He quickly made it obvious that he would not comply with the rules and made an enemy named Nurse Ratched. His deviance inevitably led to the sealing of his own fate when his actions became more pronounced and more severe. Throughout his stay, he was denied many of his rights as a mental patient and was subjected to wrongful treatment from the staff of the institution. According to the text, abnormality can be defined by comparing the behavior of the person in question to a set of criteria. This set of criteria consists of: Unusualness, Social Deviance, Faulty Perceptions or Interpretations of Reality, Significant Personal Distress, Maladaptive or Self-Defeating Behavior, and Dangerousness (Nevid et al. 5-7). These criteria are only useful in deciding whether or not someone is exhibiting abnormal behavior if the behavior is appropriate for that specific situation. For example, if someone is depressed after the loss of a loved one, then that would be appropriate for the situation and would not be considered abnormal. Similarly, if someone is depressed for no apparent reason, then it would be within the realm of possibility that the person is exhibiting abnormal behavior (Nevid et al. 5). Unusualness is a relatively simplistic term used to...

...Theology Essay When I first heard the word theology, I can honestly say I had no clue what it meant. I am a Christian but I didn’t know any terms used within the Christian world besides the normal. I looked the word up when I registered for this course and found out it simply means what we have learned about God and the bible since childhood. It is the study of faith, practice and religion; the study of God and his relation to our world. I also learned that we are all have our own view of theology because we all believe in different things when it come to religion and faith. We all have a voice when it comes to how we serve our God. I hope to learn more about the subject. I know we all need help learning about God because we can't do it alone. I plan to get to know God more within this course. Learn how to handle life and its hardships. Be able to give account for what I believe in. Learn to obey his words and study who he is and what he has done. We worship God in spirit and truth, the more we learn about theology the louder he can hear us praise. Learn to be humble, pride has a way of getting to us and blocking this. I want to learn to be as caring, kind, humble, patient, good and untainted by sin as God. This course should help me with all of those...

My entire family is Christian, I grew up in a predominately Christian neighborhood, of course, I only associated with the Christian neighbors, I attended a small Christian college and I married a Christian. My husband and I decided to raise our little Christian family in a middle upper class community with the mindset that we would provide for our children a more affluent environment, provide a better public education and give them opportunities for a more successful future. We also wanted diversity for our children so that they would have the advantage of experiencing different cultures and having a broader general worldview of humanity. ...Business Research Applications Paper RES/320 Research is used in every profession. Whether it is used to take a consensus for interest in juice bar flavors, or to isolate the blood type required for a successful transfusion, it is how all necessary questions get the appropriate and most accurate answers. I work for an organization that provides medical care. Specifically, I work for an ophthalmic clinic and surgical center. Our physician specializes in ocular diseases and refractive correction. Ocular, meaning eyes, is our specialty. Research has been used in this business by almost every person, at all times. From the initial purchase of facilities, to the expansion of facilities, to the care, diagnosis, and treatment of the patients, research is a vital part of our sustainability. Research is a key factor aiding in the physicians ability to diagnose and treat patients. However, additional consideration may need to be taken into account when providing care. When my family first had the idea to start this business, we had no idea where to begin. It was important to do some market research of our own. My father, who would be the physician, had been practicing medicine for years. However, he was no more than a shareholder in the practices he was employed by. He had never started his own practice. However, he knew from experience what type of facility he wanted to work out of and what type of diagnostic equipment would be required. My mother, who would be the CEO, was using...

...J M May 20, 2012 Film Application Paper “Freedom Writers” “Freedom Writers” is your typical story of one naive teacher sent to change the lives of what society views as under privileged kids with little or no hope for true success based on social stigmas, race, and assumptions. This movie addresses what we have many key factors addressed in this week’s lesson. It illustrates that not only businesses are faced with these types of issues, but any environment that follows a detailed system structure of organization. Through the movie, we are faced with the five stages of organizational development found on page 88 of out text. After being faced with the problem concerning the students pre-conceived notion of failure, the character played by Hillary Swank, now must anticipate the need for change. In this circumstance, she would be considered the practitioner, and the students the clients. This brings us to stage two. At this point she must develop a relationship in order to institute change. Our text outlines that the next stage is to start the diagnostic process, in this instance I consider stage two and three to be a two-part process. In order for the teacher (Mrs. G) to develop that relationship, she must diagnose how to do that. She does this by simply asking, or collecting data. Mrs. G is surprised to find out many smaller, more personal issues that are detrimental to the overall problem within her class. What is also surprising is that many of the issues...

Concept Application Paper

...Concept Application Paper Pulp Fiction Marek Matous Speech 1311 April 30, 2015 The purpose of this paper is to explain seven different communications concepts that I am going to apply on Pulp Fiction movie. Each section will explain the communications concept and how it appears in the movie. The reason why I chose this movie is just simple. It is a classic movie released in 1994, written by my favorite director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino who has a little role in this movie as well. The story of the movie is divided in seven narrative sequences and in order the reader of this paper to understand, it is necessary to see the movie. 1. Nonverbal behaviors of Kinesics, Haptics, Physical Appearance, and Artifacts Kinesics, Haptics, Physical Appearance, and Artifacts are types of nonverbal behaviors. Kinesics refers to body position and body motions, including those of the face (Wood, 2011, p. 100). Body postures and gestures may say whether we are open to interaction. Haptics is a term for nonverbal communication involving physical touch (Wood, 2011, p. 101). Applying this to the movie, there is a scene when Jules has a conversation with Vincent about a foot massage. They argue about meaning and importance of physical touch of women’s feet. The story is about when Tony Rocky Horror was thrown out of the window after he gave a foot massage to Marcellus Wallace’s wife. Physical appearance is how we look like and how we present ourselves on public. Western culture...
