ABSTRACT Leadership is very important in a school setting because it helps in the directing of a quality education and it can help with the development of future leaders through the educational system. Throughout any given educational institution, leadership theories are applied when developing leadership, based on the individual behavior and traits of your educators. Leadership theories are also applied based on the particular culture and climate of the learning institution. Utilizing multiple leadership theories will allow the educational leader an opportunity to determine what theories work, but for his or her school setting. The utilization of leadership theories will not only create future educational leaders, they will also contribute to the overall improvement of the school.

...Running head: Applying Leadership Theories Applying Leadership Theories in the School Setting Teresa E. McNair Grand Canyon University: EDA-574 September 28, 2011 Applying Leadership Theories in the School Setting As many of us already know, there are several variables in creating a successful school. A successful organization has one major attribute that sets it apart from unsuccessful organizations dynamic and effective leadership (Hersey, Blanchard, & Johnson, 2008). Leadership is defined as the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group toward reaching goal achievement in a given situation (Hersey, Blanchard, & Johnson, 2008). For the past three decades, education has been going through a sustained period of reform and restructuring (Razik & Swanson, 2010). With these changes, leadership styles must undergo changes to keep up with the needs of the global society (Razik & Swanson, 2010). Experts do not agree on one leadership style or theory that should be implemented to achieve success. Many have decided that a combination of different theories based on needs will yield the best result. This essay will depict how different leadership theories apply to my school (Forest High School) setting as reflected from the leader’s behavior and actions. Applying Leadership Theories Individuals’ interest in leadership increased during the early part of the twentieth century. Early leadership theories focused on what qualities...

Applying Leadership Theories

...Applying Leadership Theories Quentin Rogers Grand Canyon University: EDA-575 August 14, 2013 Applying Leadership Theories In today’s education system there is a demand for good leadership in schools. Leadership has been described as a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.” ("Leadership - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", n.d., p. 1) With all the accountability, testing, and changing laws administrators seem to have an overwhelming job, and they must realize that they cannot do it alone. Successful organizations that have influenced the world have revealed leaders with successful leadership styles as it relates to follower influence. (Harper, 2012, p. 1) It is vitally important for administrators to creatively influence their staff to assist in accomplishing the goals set for their schools. Failure to do so may cause the administrators their jobs. In this essay, we will examine the different leadership styles and how they are applied within Plymouth High School. Plymouth High School is a relatively small school. It has a principal and two assistant principals. It houses roughly five hundred students. In this school, we will explore the four mostly used leadership styles, which are directive, participative, and coaching leadership. For the sake of privacy, the administrators will be referred to as administrator 1and administrator 2. The first leadership theory that has...

Applying Leadership Theories

...Applying Leadership Theories Essay Danielle Brewer EDA 575: Educational Leadership in a Changing World Professor Betty Nardelli December 16, 2015 There are several leadership theories, which can be observed throughout the educational setting. The level of input in the various leadership theories ranges from shared responsibility to the leader or another individual taking majority of the control. The school I have chosen for this assignment as well as the duration of this course is West Park Elementary in Ravenna City Schools. Frank Sciarabba is the principal of West Park currently. The time spent observing Mr. Sciarabba has allowed me to observe a few different leadership styles, which vary according to the situation at hand. The main leadership style observed by Mr. Sciarabba was the participative style. This style of leadership is when the people affected by the decision have the most feasible amount of input but the leader of the building makes the final decision. Lam, Huang, Chan (2015) define participative leadership style as shared influence and joint decisions being made between the leader and the followers. Mr, Sciarabba is always asking for input from staff members and when creating committees and teams of teachers he asks for teachers to volunteer to join a committee. He is open to suggestions and feels that the staff members have many ideas that should be shared but he ultimately makes the final decision after receiving input from the staff. This leadership...

Applying Leadership Theories

...Applying Leadership Theories Peter Rosato Grand Canyon University: EDA – 575 January 29, 2014 Applying Leadership Theories The subject of my research for the duration of this course will be the school I have taught in for sixteen years. Once one of the most successful middle level schools in the Boulder Valley School District, Centennial has undergone some significant demographic and programming changes over the last six years which have dramatically challenged the administration and staff and lead to a measurable lowering of academic and behavioral standards, as well as overall student success. Many current leadership theories, as well as those which have evolved over a long period of time, offer a glimpse into the cause of the decline in both student achievement and lowered morale among long time staff members. This is further complicated by the fact that the principal is markedly old school in management style while the assistant principal, the fourth to work with this principal, is well versed in, and embraces more current leadership styles. The dichotomy that currently exists can best be expressed as leadership versus management. While the existence of these two different ideologies could be complimentary, the autocratic, transactional style of the principal does not allow for equal participation by the assistant principal. The principal is a top notch manager who handles day to day operational aspects of the...

...career plan (refer the Appendix 2), there are two leadership theories will be identified, situational leadership and transformational leadership; which can help Jiamin improve the lack skills of working as a employee and to obtain the personal and career goals. In 1969, Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard published the first edition situational leadership, named “life Cycle Theory of Leadership; and during the mid-1970s, it was renamed “situational leadership theory” (Graeff 1997). According to the task behavior and the relationship behavior that between leaders and followers, Hersey and Blanchard defined four styles in the situational leadership theory (Hersey & Blanchard, 1977). The first one is Telling; means the leaders has a high directive to underling, but offer a low support. The second one is Selling, which instead of the leader is high directive and high supportive. Leadership Theories

...The leadership theory is probably the one that is more popularly applied in our school. It is implemented to create an environment that facilitates the goals and visions of a learning community. This theory is implemented to create an environment that facilitates the goals and vision of the learning community. Our leaders put a lot of emphasis on team work and encourage collaboration amongst teachers, which is important in an educational world that keeps on changing. Applying the leadership theory is a way for the school to respond to the rapid changes taking place with new technology, global economy, and diversity (www.abolrous.com, 2012). Leaders and followers that are part of the school setting know that each and every day, there are different challenges that have to be faced. All challenges are different from one another, and must be approached differently. Even though the contingency theory tends to focus mainly on the effects of situation on broad leadership styles and organizational forms, we must be concerned with the day-to-day leadership activity, not just broad styles of leadership or organizational structures or roles (Diamond, Halverson & Spillane, 2004). It is important that school leaders possess the ability to be able to solve the different day-to-day challenges that we are faced within the learning environment. In our school setting, leaders use the contingency theory approach. They are open to different leadership styles and theories that will promote students’...

Business Management

...business world. The quality of leadership in an organization has a direct impact on the success of the organization. Leadership is the process of directing the behavior of others toward the accomplishment of some objective. Leaders need to be able to motivate their people to accomplish organizational goals. Motivation is what drives people to achieve goals, and it is the reason those people act the way that they do (Certo & Certo, 2012). In this leadership scenario, Stephanie works for Jonathan who everyone generally admires for his friendly demeanor and relaxed management style. He assigns his employees different duties each week. His employees can be working at the checkout counter one week, stocking shelves the next, and in the store’s new culinary center the following week. Alex works for Dan. Dan believes the best way for his employees to master a job is to do it over and over again. Alex finds his assigned work to be very monotonous and boring, which leads to an unmotivated employee, waiting for the opportunity to quit this job. Dan’s management style is very directive and tyrannical; his employees experience little job satisfaction and suffer from poor employee morale. The two theories of leadership that best relate to this scenario were the Life Cycle and Path Goal Theories of Leadership. The Life Cycle theory deals with the leader matching a leadership style with the situation and maturity of their followers. The Path Goal theory deals with leaders giving rewards...

Leadership

...1. Trait Leadership Trait leadership focuses on the leader and the traits he exhibits. Certain types of traits make leaders more effective. For example, the late Steve Jobs was known for his charisma. His ability to passionately articulate his visions made people want to follow his lead. Some other examples of traits that make an effective leader include intelligence, self-confidence, integrity and determination. Leadership candidates often take personality assessment tests to pinpoint their traits. Trait-Leadership Advantages The trait leadership approach embodies the idea that leaders are exceptional individuals who possess a combination of valuable traits. This fits in with society's idea that leaders are set apart from the rest of the group -- or leaders are born, not made. The role of personality traits in the leadership process has a large body of research -- more than a century -- to support it. No other leadership approach can make this claim of credibility. Also, the trait leadership approach serves as a benchmark for identifying suitable leaders. This approach makes personality assessments valuable for identifying a potential leader's strengths and weaknesses. It is also suitable for using with individuals and groups. Trait Leadership Disadvantages No definitive list of leadership traits exists. Due to the large body of research, countless traits are present. With so many traits, it's difficult to determine which traits make the most effective leader. Also, the...

Organizational Behavior

...“A work organization can be defined as a socially designed unit, or collectivity, which engages in activities to accomplish a goal or set of objectives, has an identifiable boundary, and is linked to the external society. Work organizations are absolutely different from other social entities, which include families, clans, tribes, etc” (John Bratton, Work and organization Behavior, 2007, pg5). Organizational behavior encompasses the systematic study and careful application of knowledge about how people act within organizations. (Wikipedia, October 2010) We need to understand 3 key areas while studying OB (Organization Behavior); they are Personality, Motivation and Leadership. Personality is the total pattern of characteristic ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that constitute the individual’s distinctive method of relating to the environment (Kagan and Havemann, 1976) or the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his characteristic behaviour and thought (Allport, 1964).Personality is explained by various theorists like Jung, Hans Eyesenck, Costa and McRae.
