Writing Exercise 2 (Apollo 13)

1. It helped them focus on the new goal, and one common goal of immediately returning home, rather than the original goal of landing on the moon. The disappointment of not being able to land on the moon was short-lived once the one and only remaining goal was established and made clear to all.

2. It would be pointless and a waste of time to focus on features of the space craft that were damaged, no longer functioning, or would decrease the success of the mission in any way. Krantz found it important to spend the very little and valuable time they had remaining focused on the instruments and space craft features that were in good working order or features that would help them return safely. 3. It was determined that the fuel cells was one of the most important features of the space craft to get them home safely upon re-entry. They would not be able to return home without the fuel cells. So it was important to do without the fuel cells while they could.

4. Krantz created an environment for his crew so that they could physically work with materials needed in order to explain/communicate to the flight crew, the proper steps and procedures needed in order to solve the CO2 problem. For example the tape and bag solution.

5. Successful failure meant that they would return home safely, but not land on the moon. The creativity of a few mission control team members led them to think about the use of any and all materials available to the flight crew, as simple as items such as duct tape and a bag.

6. During the time of stress and conflict among the other two flight crew, Lovell became somewhat of a charismatic leader. He gave the other two hope that they would return home safely and they seemed to look up to him and trust in him for the leader that he was. His showing this leadership calmed the

Leadership Lessons from Appollo 13

...Apollo 13; Inner Teachings Lusalu Daniel Academic writers Online The Apollo 13 is NASA’s seventh Apollo space mission taking human beings into the outer space. The launch of the Apollo 13 space craft took place at the Kennedy Space center on 11th April 1970. On the second day of the mission the service Module was crippled by an explosion of the second oxygen tank. As a result the mission was aborted and the crew working in conjunction with the astronauts back on earth maneuvered strategically to safely return on earth. The team had to overcome insurmountable hardships occasioned by loss of power and water, lack of proper food and the freezing condition inside the space ship to land successfully on earth, that the mission was dubbed a successful failure (Shayler, 2013). The Apollo 13 has been turned into a successful film and presents lots of great teachings on surviving a crisis. The following are the vital inner teachings drawn from the Apollo 13 mission. The first lesson learned from the Apollo 13 mission is prioritizing and communication in a crisis. After the second oxygen tank exploded the priority was to return the crew safely on earth. Thus the projected lunar landing was quickly abandoned and every effort was concentrated on the safe return of the crew to the earth. Without prioritizing activities and effective communication this would not have been possible (Holden, 2012). Training is mandatory for every mission...

...Libby Fleck 2nd hour Psychology Inquiry Interview What disorders do you have? OCD and acute paranoia. When did you first notice you had these disorders? 13 I started noticing acute paranoia and 14 when I noticed OCD. What happens with your acute paranoia? I don’t really like going out to eat and being in public places all that much. I’m always feeling like something is going to happen. I check my back a lot to make sure nothing is going to happen. What happens with your OCD? I have a specific place for everything in my bedroom. A place for trash, clothes, cologne, and golf stuff. Did you ever seek professional help for your disorders? I went to therapy starting at age 14 until I was about 15. It was only for about 8 months. When Philip was thirteen years old his friends and family first started to notice his ticks. He went to a psychiatrist when he was fourteen years old and they explained explain to him what his problem was, and how it doesn't overall affect him and it is rather normal. Nothing he was doing made it worse or not worse, except Philip’s acute paranoia. That made it difficult for him to sometimes go out to eat or go to a movie because he was always worried something would happen. Being paranoid is a little bit of a burden to Philip. He is constantly checking his back, and he always has to know who is in the room and any sudden movements he has to watch out for. As for Philip’s OCD things just need to always be in their place. For example, his room is very...

...1. King cares about what is happening in Birmingham because he says that what affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Birmingham is one of the most segregated city in the US at that time. No one should feel like an outsider in America, according to King. So he wanted to help them out 2. Scheduling at Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company

...Running head: RWBFC Scheduling at Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company Shelia Iceson Operations Management Dr. Kyle Peacock December 12, 2011 Develop a staffing plan for RWBFC in accordance with the constraints stated in the case. This staffing plan recognizes the significant commitment of human resources necessary to accomplish the job and its requirements. It also recognizes that the Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company (RWBFC) must continue to provide a high level of service and maintain the same level of productivity while this project is underway. The Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company’s staffing strategy is to minimize labor costs by staffing only what is needed for current production due to its inability to expand at the current facility. Staffing levels are rebuilt or contracted as determined by production schedules and as reflected by staffing requirements and constraints. To minimize the potential for over or under staffing, hiring should be based on a review of RWBFC’s production schedule and a review of at least 2 to 3 months forecasting. In order to develop the staffing plan for RWBFC the basis of estimate analysis needs to be used, considering the following constraints: * RWBFC needs to operate ten hours a day * RWBFC needs to operate seven days a week * Employees must have three consecutive days off * The manufacturing process requires a minimum of 20 employees The following table represents a simple schedule...

Independent Novel: the Hunger Games

...Olivia Mokler Mr. Burgner English II 5 April, 2012 Independent Novel: Journal #1 Summary- As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol in which a 13th district was destroyed, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, an event in which the participants (or "tributes") must fight in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one remains. The story follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers in place of her sister, Primrose, for the 74th annual Hunger Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. Also selected from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a baker's son whom Katniss knows from school, and who once gave her bread when her family was starving. If she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity, and life against love. In the terrifying events that follow, Katniss must marshal all her skills to stay alive, and all her emotions to remain a caring human being in the face of the Games. Quote Analysis- “Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen.” Taking the kids from the districts, forcing them to kill one another while people watch, is the Capitol’s way of reminding the districts how their in control, and we are at their mercy. How little chance...

Example: find the Median of {12, 3 and 5} Put them in order: 3, 5, 12 The middle number is 5, so the median is 5. Example 2 Look at these numbers: 3, 13, 7, 5, 21, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29 If we put those numbers in order we have: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56 There are fifteen numbers. Our middle number will be the eighth number: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56 The median value of this set of numbers is 23. (Note that it didn't matter if we had some numbers the same in the list) Two Numbers in the Middle BUT, if there are an even amount of numbers things are slightly different. In that case we need to find the middle pair of numbers, and then find the value that would be half way between them. This is easily done by adding them together and dividing by two. An example will help: 3, 13, 7, 5, 21, 23, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29 If we put those numbers in order we have: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 56 There are now fourteen numbers and so we don't have just one middle number, we have a pair of middle numbers: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 56 In this example the middle numbers are 21 and 23. To find the value half-way between them, add them together and divide by 2: 21 + 23 = 44 44 ÷ 2 = 22 And, so, the Median in this example is 22. (Note that...
