...AR 670-1 is the bible of the military. Therefore it comes with the same thoughts and practices as the bible. The bible is written words that never change unless someone rewrites it to what they interpret it to mean. Same thing with church. You go to church on Sundays and listen to a preacher preach about the gospel but in all actuality he is preaching about his interpretation of the bible. Same thing with AR 670-1, especially with hairstyles. Hairstyles covered in AR 670-1 are written guidelines about the grooming standards of males and females in the Army. So are these written guidelines followed precisely or does someone interpret what they think it should be and enforce their opinion. In most all cases it is an enforced opinion. Someone may have the opinion that if you cant see skin on the side of the head then it isn't in regulation when in actuality it is as long as its a tapered appearance. So Where does it end? Why have a set standard if its not going to be a set standard. Is it an Army standard or someones standard? You can literally walk down a hallway and someone will say something about your hair then turn around and someone else will say something totally different about your hair. So there isn't a standard there are thousands of standards. With that being said, the guidelines state that Leaders judge the appropriateness of a particular hairstyle by the appearance of headgear when worn. ...I am writing about what is the importance on being a NCO and AR 670-1. Last week I got caught with a tongue ring in my mouth by a Senior NCO, 1SG D****. As a NCO I showed poor discipline and lack of character. AR 670-1 states that c. Body piercing. When on any Army installation or other places under Army control, soldiers may not attach, affix,or display objects, articles, jewelry, or ornamentation to or through the skin while they are in uniform, in civilian clothes on duty, or in civilian clothes off duty (this includes earrings for male soldiers). The only exception is for female soldiers, as indicated in paragraph 1–14d, below. (The term “skin” is not confined to external skin, but includes the tongue, lips, inside the mouth, and other surfaces of the body not readily visible). So by this regulation I was at the wrong. I should be a better role model to these solider. If they see me doing this how can a solider respect me or even the NCO core I need realize that I am not a kid anymore and I need to grow up and start acting maturely. Religion, Grooming and the Affects It Has Uniform Practices The United States Army places a high value on the rights of its Soldiers according to Army Directive 2016-34. Individuals intending to enter service have the opportunity to submit a pre-accession request for religious accommodations waiver of AR 670-1 and receive a decision before they enter. Such accommodations include that of food, prayer times, and wear and appearance of the uniform. As a leader, to support the force we have to adhere to the accommodations of our Soldiers. We therefore must educate ourselves in order to meet these accommodation standards. First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the rights of religious practices, which can provide a challenge for the Department of Defense to support and defend the constitution.
