While applying archetypal literary theory to the storyline of Lullabies for Little Criminals, I found that overall, the characters are most similar to that of the archetype. In the second third of the novel, we are introduced to a major character, Alphonse, who comes into Baby’s life as a older model for Baby, “When Alphonse came into my life, it strangely felt a little bit like he was a mother figure.” (O’Neill 186) Having him around makes Baby feel safe and loved, the same way that a parental figure would. Before Alphonse, some temporary mother figures in her life were Theo’s mother and foster parents like Mary. Although the novel does not go into detail about Theo and Baby’s relationship, so far Theo seems to be Baby’s good friend, and does everything together with her. Their relationship started when the hate for a bully from school named Lauren brought them together, and strengthened when they broke into her home and trashed the interior while she and her family were at church, “[Theo] was also very happy that we were both on the same side and were, therefore, no longer enemies.” (O,Neill 132) From the beginning of the novel up until the end of The Devil in a Track Suit, Baby’s character has the reader believe that Jules is the reason why her life is so miserable , her excuse of living cheaply and between dirty, and dangerous neighbourhoods.
