...Sequence of a Typical Construction Project Like everything, a construction project begins with an idea that is born of a particular wish or need. Once the decision has been made by the owner to transform this idea into a reality, in a sense, the first phase of the project has begun. During this project initiation, the owner gives great consideration to the various parameters of the project, such as, what is actually needed, the work required, and how much financing may be obtained. The decision to build is not one to be taken lightly, but by the end of this evaluation process the owner should have a clear, but very general vision of the impending project. After this period of analysis, if the project still proves beneficial, the owner may then decide to take the next step and hire design professionals to begin the ‘design phase’ of the project. Upon selection of design professionals, the owner has now become the client and the programming stage of the design phase may begin. During this process, the design professional’s primary focus is to ascertain the needs and desires of the client. Programming also involves searching into which codes and regulations will be applicable to the specific project. If required, the design professionals may also be engaged to assist the client in site selection and feasibility. A land surveyor and real estate agent may also be employed to help in determining the adaptability of a site for a particular project. There are many important...

...Emily O’Neil My Semester Journey “It is our choices, Harry, that show us what we truly are, far more than our abilities” ― J.K. Rowling wrote in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This quote accurately describes my journey this semester of trying to make the correct choice on a major in college. Based on what I choose as my major will show other people who I truly am, not because of what I have accomplished already in my life. Abilities and skills don’t mean anything until you can prove yourself and make the right choices in life. For instance, you could be very good at math and decide to choose a major that has a very light coursework so that you could easily graduate without any problems. Making this decision would be wrong and would show others that the real you aren’t motivated or determined in life. The major that I choose will be something that will challenge me during college and will also agree with my skills. Thinking back to August, I was choosing a major between about three different options. I knew I was interested in animals, construction, and math, but I had no idea how or if I could ever combine the three interests. In the back of my mind, I knew I wanted to challenge myself in college so that I would actually be able to get a high paying job in the future. I knew that choosing a challenging major would pay off in the long run and employers would then see who I truly was, a determined, hard-worker that will do anything to succeed. This is how I coincide...

...For construction projects, quality control means making sure things are done according to the plans, specifications, and permit requirements. Quality is defined as 'fitness to purpose', in regards to how quality is significant for Bull’s Construction. It means providing a building that has an appropriate quality for the purpose for which it is intended. Moreover, a different way of looking at this concept is that the price of the building could potentially reflect the expectations of quality. A cheaper building probably uses inferior materials and is likely to be less attractive and less durable. Quality control in construction typically involves insuring compliance with minimum standards of material and workmanship in order to insure the performance of the facility according to the design. These minimum standards are contained in the specifications described in the previous section. For the purpose of insuring compliance, random samples and statistical methods are commonly used as the basis for accepting or rejecting work completed and batches of materials. Rejection of a batch is based on non-conformance or violation of the relevant design specifications. Procedures for this quality control practice are described in the following sections. One of the elements that our company will be utilizing to assure a quality measurement process for our projects is an inspector. An inspector tries to ensure that the job is done right the first time and that no major accidents occur...

...Sperry/MacLennan Architects and Planners sOURCE: This case has been prepared by Dr. Mary R. Brooks, of Dalhousie University, as a basis for classroom discussion rather than to illustrate effective or ineffective handling of an administrative situation. The assistance of the Secretary of State, Canadian Studies Program, in developing the case is gratefully acknowledged. Copyright q 1990 Mary R. Brooks. Reprinted with permission. In August 1988, Mitch Brooks, a junior partner and director of Sperry/MacLennan (S/M), a Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, architectural practice specializing in recreational facilities, is in the process of developing a plan to export his company’s services. He intends to present the plan to the other directors at their meeting the first week of October. The regional market for architectural services is showing some signs of slowing, and S/M realizes that it must seek new markets. As Sheila Sperry, the office manager and one of the directors, said at their last meeting: “You have to go wider than your own backyard. After all, you can only build so many pools in your own backyard.” About the Company Drew Sperry, one of the two senior partners in Sperry/ MacLennan, founded the company in 1972 as a one-man architectural practice. After graduating from Nova Scotia Technical College (now the Technical University of Nova Scotia) in 1966, Sperry worked for six years for Robert J. Flinn before deciding that it was time to start his own company. By...

... Introduction: The Nusserwanjee Building Project is unique in the architectural history of the subcontinent. The Nusserwanjee Building is a 100 year old Kharadar landmark, named after Karachi philanthropist, Jamshed Nusserwanjee (Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta, philanthropist, theosophist, the first mayor, the architect and father of modern Karachi). Today, it has been relocated, stone by stone, to become a part of the IVS campus. History: The Nusserwanjee Building was originally constructed in 1903 by Jamshed’s father, Nusserwanjee Rustomji Mehta, as warehouse and offices of Nusserwanjee and Co., a very prosperous trading and manufacturing enterprise. An additional wing was constructed in 1919, using R.C.C. for columns, beams and roof, the latest construction technology then prevalent, and plastered rubble stone and coursed stone masonry. The building’s new history, so to speak, begins in 1991 the year Indus Valley was born. That year, 12 prominent architects of the city brainstormed for the evolution of a design for the campus of the new institution. A few weeks later, Shahid Abdullah, one of the founders of the Indus Valley, found the beautiful old Nusserwanjee building, then used as a warehouse and for offices, which was for sale in other words it was to be demolished. What followed was an impossible ambition to buy the building and move it to Clifton. The beautiful...

...Environment Human beings respond to their environment in different ways. What is seen and perceived affects the behavior that is exuded. This is true for architectural design and physical structure. In fact, architectural design can control human behavior. Architects build structures and place them strategically in order to respond to human needs. For example, a playground or supermarket’s design is a direct layout of what the architect wants the individual to experience. Commercial and residential design plays a major role in a person’s life; therefore these structures are built with considerations of the general public. For example, an office building that has handicapped access and parking lot with handicapped spaces, are placed to provide convenience to those in need of it. With building and design it is also important to create sustainable development. Sustainable development now will promote better days for the future. It’s never too late to think ahead. Physical structure on human behavior "For architects and their buildings to be taken seriously, buildings must be imbued with the power to make a difference to their inhabitants" (Kraftl & Adey, 2008). The job of an architect is one of grave importance. Their creations create change. Buildings, homes, parks all create a mental effect on a person. The effect comes from the building of it to the structure itself. When a structure is being built, the anticipation of what is to come plays a role...

... EBE141-NBB January 16th,2016 How the structural engineer actually work Structural engineering is one of the branch in Civil engineering which attract me a lot compares with others. tructural engineers design, create, solve problems, innovate and use maths and science to shape the world. The structures they create are used by all of us every day; from houses, theatres, sports stadia and hospitals, to bridges, oil rigs and space satellites.Structural engineers are involved at every stage of a structure’s realisation and they play a key part in design and construction teams. Working with architects, and alongside other professions, structural engineers create conceptual designs and ensure that the structure can be built and is stable and durable. A career in structural engineering involves team working, creative problem solving and practical skills such as sketching and drawing, and using computer to create structures and specifications for contractors. Structural engineers can specialise in a range of ascinating areas including conservation, sustainability, seismic or humanitarian engineering. As my personal analysis, Structural engineer is a career that require the design skill , observe skill and responsibility. Structural engineer also require the initiative and positive, strong logical thinking ability and...

...15 British Construction Industry 15 British Construction Industry Executive Summary The construction industry of UK has dramatically changed in past 15 years. The main catalyst of this change is the element of partnering, which has taken place of traditional adversarial approach. This concept though is yet new in this particular industry but has been suggested as the critical solution to the downturn of the economic conditions as well as the spiraling issues related to the contracts which had dogged UK construction industry in early 1990s. Latham was the first person who claimed that the partnering might be the only remedy to the fragmented, ineffective and the disputes which are saturating the construction industry which can be replaced with proper procurement, effective communication among different stakeholders, teamwork and fairness. These ideas were endorsed by Egan and proposed set of the recommendations and as the result, the outcome would be much improved relations among the three major stakeholders within the supply chain which are the main contractor, client and sub-contractor. Majority of the highly profiled clients have already embraced this new concept like education, local authorities, NHS, water companies in UK. Companies like Severn Trent Water and Yorkshire also used partnering as well as framework agreements, which are inspired by the reports of Latham and Egan. Even though after the 12 years of the report of Latham and Egan, still general opinions...

...to acquire a foreign firm. The size of your firm will double, and it will become the largest in your industry. What does your firm do and what does the foreign firm you are trying to acquire do? Where are the firms based? My firm is an architecture firm. An architecture firm is a company which specializes in providing architectural services to clients. Such firms typically hire architects along with support staff who help the architects do their jobs, and they may be part of a larger company which handles many aspects of the design and construction process, from contracting to interior decorating. Small firms may include one or two architects working together, while big companies can hire hundreds or thousands of people, sometimes spread out across multiple offices. Architects are critical members of the building team, because they are responsible for developing the fundamental design, look, and feel of a structure. In many regions, architectural drawings must be filed with permit applications, making the architect's services very necessary for people who want to do work legally. Architects can also be consulted over the course of a job as conditions change and adjustments need to be made to the original design. The foreign firm I am trying to acquire is Acer: Taiwan, computer hardware which was founded in 1976 and in 2010 ranks 2nd for total PCs and notebooks globally. Acer Incorporated is a Taiwan-based multinational computer technology and electronics corporation that...

...ENGINEERING ETHICS The Kansas City Hyatt Regency Walkways Collapse Department of Philosophy and Department of Mechanical Engineering Texas A&M University NSF Grant Number DIR-9012252 Negligence And The Professional "Debate" Over Responsibility For Design Instructor's Guide - Introduction To The Case On July 17, 1981, the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, held a videotaped tea-dance party in their atrium lobby. With many party-goers standing and dancing on the suspended walkways, connections supporting the ceiling rods that held up the second and fourth-floor walkways across the atrium failed, and both walkways collapsed onto the crowded first-floor atrium below. The fourth-floor walkway collapsed onto the second-floor walkway, while the offset third-floor walkway remained intact. As the United States' most devastating structural failure, in terms of loss of life and injuries, the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkways collapse left 114 dead and in excess of 200 injured. In addition, millions of dollars in costs resulted from the collapse, and thousands of lives were adversely affected. The hotel had only been in operation for approximately one year at the time of the walkways collapse, and the ensuing investigation of the accident revealed some unsettling facts: During January and February, 1979, the design of the hanger rod connections was changed in a series of events and disputed communications between the fabricator (Havens Steel Company) and the engineering design...

In order for us as a person and an IT Administrator is to stay safe. History has shown the safety departments about having to write policies which are used to provide recommended practices for the design and installation of safety standards with the Telecommunications infrastructure that will support a wide variety of existing and future services, using industry accepted design and installation methods. To define standards that will enable the design and implementation of structured cabling systems for commercial buildings and between buildings. The telecommunications industry standards, codes and practices are defined in various state and agencies on web sites defined in a catalog that can purchase and downloaded and read for immediate enforcement of these guidelines used for each industry. These policies are intended to answer faxes of infrastructure practices and not to be a substitute for knowledge of industry accepted practices, standards and codes. Policies are not intended to be used in lieu of a construction specification document, are used to abide to the specifications. Communications technologies can be complex and designed and installed by experienced professionals. Telecommunications are considered a fourth utility, to be designed, funded and installed with...
