...FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--Talking on a cell phone while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk, new federally funded research shows, and it doesn't matter whether you use a hands-free model or hold the phone up to your ear during the conversation. The study, by University of Utah researchers, adds to a growing body of evidence that conversing by phone while behind the wheel can be hazardous. "We found that when people talk on a cell phone they are as impaired as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit (of 0.08). It was a surprise to us," said Frank Drews, one of the Utah researchers who has published earlier studies showing drivers on the phone are at higher risk of accidents. The peer-reviewed study is being published Friday in the quarterly Human Factors, the journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, which promotes the study of how humans, machines and other devices interact most optimally. The study was funded by a $25,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, which is interested in impaired attention in pilots, and by the researchers. Drews and co-author David Strayer said lawmakers might want to use the findings to consider outlawing cell phone use while driving. The cell phone industry has issued guidelines for drivers using the phones but maintains under certain conditions it is safe to talk and drive. Among the guidelines: place calls only when not moving, use a hands-free device...

...Are you sick and tired of having your life endangered by drivers who feel they are too important to put their phones down and pay attention to what is going on around them while they are driving? Well many people are? There are already many distractions that a person has to avoid while driving, or even when they are walking down the street, let alone texting and cell phone use. Anything can happen at any given moment in this life. What would you do if it was you driving and you were the one who hit your family member of someone you knew? It would be very devasting and your life would go on even after the short period of grief, but you would have to live with that for the rest of your life. Once information is presented why cell phones are a big distraction, one should be convinced not to use their cell phone while driving and remember to “to drive now and talk later”. We all need to take a stand, because we risk not only our lives, but the lives of others. Could you imagine getting a phone call that one of your family members had been hit by a driver that was texting, or answering a phone call while they were trying to operate their vehicle? Most of us would probably say: “Oh that will or could never happen to me”, But, when it does it makes you sit back and start thinking about what you can do different in order to avoid any type of accidents. Phone technology has come a long way from when it was first invented back in the 1800’s. Technology has had a major impact...

...Are cell phones dangerous? Do you have a personal cell phone? Do you know that cell phones have evolved rapidly in the past few years and have become the world's most useful electronic? Cell phones were first tested in the late 1970s by Illinois Bell in Chicago, Illinois, and they were a great success. Cellular Radio Telephones, also known as cell phones, have low-powered and lightweight radio transceiver that provides voice telephone and other services to mobile users. Cell phones primarily operate like portable telephones. However, unlike cordless phones, cell phones are completely portable and do not require a jack to access the wire-based networks operated by local telephone companies like PNCC. In today's modern society new generation of services for cell phones have increased. Now it provides videoconferencing and Internet access with the ability to send e-mail. Cellular telephones have become very popular with professionals and consumers as a way to communicate while away from their regular, wire-based phones. Although cell phones bring some conveniences and benefits to our lives, they also have some potentially dangerous effects. Cell phones are potentially dangerous when people tend to talk on their cell phones while driving and by doing so; it creates a greater risk of getting into an accident. Sometimes when you're talking on the phone, you tend to lose your attention on the road because of your focus on the person that's talking to you. Once, for example, you...

...country is asking. Mobile phones are considered by many as an essential part of modern day life, from the businessperson who uses the mobile phone as a vital link with the office, to the teenager who has the phone for recreational use. By using mobile phones are we damaging our long-term health just to stay in contact or worse simply just for a good image? Mobile or cellular phones have changed dramatically over the past two or three years. The new generation of WAP phones now allow the user to connect to the Internet, send e-mail and even listen to the radio. The e-mail feature, a tremendous advancement in technology, allows businesspeople to contact their office at anytime day or night. Not only can e-mail be used throughout Britain but also messages can be sent globally. Sending e-mail is not nearly as expensive as the conventional methods of contact, therefore has the potential to reduce costs considerably for the company. The e-mail can be sent anytime, not just within office hours, and time differences between countries are no longer a consideration. Many mobile phone users claim one of the main advantages of ownership is the ability to contact friends or family in the event of an emergency. Most women who travel alone feel more secure knowing that in an emergency or breakdown they can summon help without leaving the safety of their car therefore, the mobile reduces the chances of being run over or worse raped. By having your mobile phones with you could it be a silent...

...Having a cell phone in today’s society has become a regular part of life. Even I have a cell phone and I’m really not a big talker. What’s astonishing to me is kids seem to all have cell phones by the time they get into middle school. We rely on these communication devices for every aspect of our daily lives, whether for personal use or for work. To me we rely so heavily on the cell phone that it is becoming dangerous. Think to a time when you were driving down the road and came up on a slower vehicle. They were swerving within their lane, couldn’t keep a constant speed and just seemed like they were completely distracted and not paying attention to the road and the seemingly easy task of driving. You want to get by the person but every time an opportunity to do so came into view it would quickly disappear because the other driver would speed up or do something to avert your opportunity. Finally you get your chance and go around the person. You look over in an attempt to quench your curiosity and see the person is talking on their cell phone. It all makes sense now; they are paying more attention to the conversation they have going on than to their driving. Driving is a dangerous activity in itself, but when you add other distractions like talking and or texting on a cell phone, the outcomes can be anything but pleasant and lead to extensive consequences. Drivers are far more distracted while talking on a cell phone than just talking to a passenger in the car...

Cell phones should never be used while driving for the following reasons you could get in an accident, you could be injured, or you could possibly die. Drivers ages 15-44 years old die because of accidents. If you were to text while behind the wheel you could get in an accident. In 2011, 1.3 million accidents were caused by texting behind the wheel. Cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes per year. 1 out of 4 accidents in the U.S is caused by texting while driving. 21% of teens are involved in accidents due to distracted driving. In 2013, 16 percent of all police-reported crashes were caused...

...Is It Dangerous to Drive and Use Cell Phones Michelle Roberts RES/110 May 4, 2010 Is It Dangerous to Drive and Use Cell Phones The technology of cellular phones has come a long way since the first cell phone was introduced to the public on April 3, 1973 by Motorola. This cell phone was called the “DynaTAC”. It weighed 2.5 pounds and only had three cell phone features dialing, listening, and talking and only had a talk time of 35 minutes that took 10 hours to charge. Although the “DynaTAC” was introduced in 1973, it was not put on the market until 1983.The cost of this cellular was $3,500. Today’s cell phones are much smaller and most of them weigh less than three ounces. They have a variety of features. To name a few; built in cameras, video capturing, text messaging, touch screens, and mobile web for less than a fraction of the cost of the “DynaTAC”. The price of cell phones today can run anywhere from $50 to $600. Studies done by Davis, Payne, and Mozee (2010) “Cell phones are now widespread, with more than 255 million wireless subscribers in the United States, comprising 84% of the population. In 2007, cell phone users spent 2.1 trillion minutes talking on cell phones and transmitted 363 billion SMS (“text messages”) over the course of the year.” With so many people using cell phones one can only imagine how many people drive while using their cell phones. Therefore, is it dangerous to drive and use cell phones? Should there be stricter laws banning or putting...

...Cell Phones are Dangerous Back when cell phones were first invented, they were very bulky and do not look anything like they do today. Those bulky cell phones were only popular among the riches who were the only ones that could afford one. That is why cell phones back then were a luxury and was not very much of a need at all. The bulky cell phones could not do much because all it could pretty much do is make phone calls like a home phone. The only difference between a home phone and a bulky cell phone was that the cell phone you could carry around with yourself. In today’s society, cell phones are pretty much a need among most people. They can make phone calls, send text messages, send emails, play games, roam the internet, pay bills and use social media. The funny part is, that is only the most important things the cell phone can do and can do much more. The scary thing with these cell phones are that pretty much anyone can learn how to use one. It is no longer a luxury item. According to Kathleen O’Brien, “They were luxury items, and use of them in public was a flamboyant declaration that the owner had money to burn” (86). These cell phones have taken over peoples life’s and will continue to do that. The cell phones are also no longer bulky and are as slim as it can get. These cell phones can easily slide into anyone’s pocket with no problem. There are many different kinds of cell phones that can do many different thing with the new technology we have today. The problem with...

...Cell Phone Use While Driving In today’s technologically advanced world it is hard to find anyone without a cell phone in their purse or pocket. Cell phones are being used more frequently during normal activities, such as at the dinner table, in the movie theater, and in the car. The use of a cell phone in a moving vehicle raises the risk of collision 3 to 6.5 times greater than that of an undistracted driver (Seo &Torabi, 2004). The increase of 16-24 year olds using cell phones combined with their lack of driving experience creates a deadly cocktail of inevitable consequences. These consequences are closely related to those of a person driving well above the legal blood-alcohol-limit (Seo &Torabi, 2004). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) seems to feel that cell phone use isn’t that dangerous. The NHTSA states “only 18 percent of the 5,474 people killed and 5 percent of the 448,000 injured in crashes were because of cell phone use” (www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811379.pdf). Eight-teen percent, that’s 985 people dead each year, if the number of drivers using cell phones stays the same. That’s 985 times The United States takes a step backwards to getting closer to finding a cure for cancer, because each one of those 985 people has the potential to do just that. Oh, don’t forget the five percent of the 448,000 or 22,400 people that were only injured. Injured, what exactly does that entail? Injuries sustained from motor vehicle accidents...

... Then you think to yourself, “I don’t want to follow behind or be in the lane right next to them.” So you speed up, and sure enough the driver is using their cell phone. Well, I am sure you have. Cell phone use while driving is not only frustrating for other drivers; it is very dangerous to all drivers who are on the road. When a driver is using a cell phone, it doesn’t matter what kind of person they are, or what their age is, or their gender. Accidents don’t show any sympathy. Driving while using a cell phone is dangerous and there should be laws that prohibit the use of cell phones while driving. These laws should be effective in every state, not just some states. This is a seriously dangerous issue because that driver is putting not only but their life at stake, but the lives of other drivers on the road at stake when cell phones are used. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in the U.S. that involved distracted driving (dd), of the 5,474 deaths, 995 of them involved reports of a cell phone being a factor, and 24,000 injuries were reported from cell phone related accidents (Cell Phone & Texting While Driving Statistics, 2010). This is a serious problem in our world today in the lifestyle we live, but the problem is solvable. All that needs to happen is for a few laws to be passed to refrain people from using cell phones. It should not be legal in any state to talk or text while driving. If laws were passed, there would be no question that it would make the roads much safer and...

...Are Cell Phones Dangerous? Reading For advanced learners Is talking on a cell phone hazardous to your health? It is difficult to know for sure. Some research suggests that heavy users of mobile phones are at a greater risk of developing brain tumours. However, many other studies suggest there are no links between cancer and cell phone use. The main problem with the current research is that mobile phones have only been popular since the 1990s. As a result, it is impossible to study the long term exposure of cell phone use. This concerns many health professionals who point out that many cancers take at least 10 years to develop. Another concern about these studies is that many have been funded by those who benefit financially from the cell phone industry. Many cancers take ten years to develop. Over three billion people use cell phones on a daily basis, and many talk for more than an hour a day. Cell phone antennas are similar to microwave ovens. While both rely on electromagnetic radiation, the radio waves in cell phones are lower in radio frequency (RF). Microwave ovens have enough RF to cook food and are therefore known to be dangerous to human tissues. However, the concern is that the lower frequency radio waves that cell phones rely on may also be dangerous. It seems logical that holding a heat source near your brain for a long period of time is a potential health hazard. Cell phones get hot when they are used for a long period of time. Some researchers believe...

...Ban Cell Phone Use While Driving Amber R. Muniz Kaplan University Ban Cell Phone Use While Driving A cell phone wielding driver weaving in and out of traffic and drifting across lanes, because they are completely distracted by the device in their hand, may be all too familiar. When using a cell phone while driving, it impairs the persons driving abilities as much as a person with a 0.08 blood alcohol level. Think of the drivers that you pass daily; how many were using cell phones? Imagine if all of those drivers were drinking instead of using their cell phones behind the wheel. Cell phone use while driving is dangerous because it causes slower response time and reduces the situational awareness of the driver. The best solution to this issue is to ban the use of cell phones while driving. “Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death in the United States for 3 to 34 year olds. Crashes are among the top three causes of death throughout a person’s lifetime. They also are the number one cause of work-related death. Annually, more U.S. soldiers are killed in crashes in privately-owned vehicles than all other Army ground accidents combined” (National Safety Council, 2010) Distracted drivers using cell phones cause about 2,600 traffic fatalities and 330,000 accidents every year (Richtel, 2009). Many drivers talk, text, and respond to their e-mails while trying to drive. People that use cell phone while driving are not aware of their surroundings....

...Parlad Dhungana ENG 095 06/17/ 2014 Using a Cell Phone While Driving Have you ever used a cell phone while driving? Is it dangerous or not? Using a cell phone while driving is common, but widely considered dangerous. We can’t imagine our life without using a cell phone. It is a part of our daily activities. We use a cell phone to make calls, E-mails, text messages, surf the Internet, to listen music and many other daily activities. Many of these activities take place while a person is driving. So, it is not only becoming a part of our daily activities, but also putting our self at risk. In my point of view, using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of accident. Using a cell phone while driving distracts our mind. Distraction is an important risk factor of traffic injuries. Suppose you are holding your phone on your ear, listening to the conversation, and managing your car all at once. You're not paying attention; you could miss a turn or not see something coming out into the road. This can be incredibly dangerous. Using a cell phone while driving distracts your mind obviously. It can take your eyes off the road, your hands off the steering wheel and your mind off the sudden situation that can lead a more dangerous accident and result may be death. Moreover, if you are speaking on a cell phone while on the road you can’t notice all road traffic signals, may go too close to other vehicle and find it very hard to keep a regular speed...

Why Banning The Use of Cell Phones While Driving Should Be Mandatory Nationwide On December 13th 2011, the National Transit Safety Board called for a complete ban on cell phone use while driving, arguing that even hands-free phone use was distracting and dangerous. However, two weeks later, U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, said he would not endorse a ban. His justification was simply that hands free cell phone use was “not the big problem in America”. This is not an acceptable government response. The use of cell phones and texting devices is known to be dangerous both through anecdotal evidence and hard scientific fact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association estimates that over 3000 fatalities are caused by distracted driving every year. Furthermore, an estimated one out six drivers admits to sending text messages while driving.
