Essay Q2 - Are Joe’s actions ethical or unethical? Explain.

Before going in to the analysis of Joe´s actions it is important to point out that there are many different thought of school when it comes to ethics and morals and great philosophers throughout history has had a hard time deciding on any one universal ethical law. I personally tend to lean towards a mix of deontological ethics, where any acts is to be determined ethical or unethical based on whether it follows a certain set of rules or not, and what my religion teaches me namely that all actions are to be judged in the light of the persons intention. Given this background we first need to break down and understand what Joe has actually done, and why. Only then can we try to tie all pieces together to get a holistic view of the situation and determine whether his actions were ethical or not.
Instruct subordinates to set aggressive targets
I have a hard time finding anything unethical about asking your subordinates to set aggressive targets with the pure intention and belief that it will lead to better performance, given everything else remains the same. As a division-manager Joe is hired to do his best to get his division to perform at its top. If Joe sincerely believes that by simply asking his subordinates to set aggressive targets would make them perform at their best, given it does not harm other parts of the firm, it is his obligation to do so. To make it even more clear let us turn it around. What if Joe believes that by asking his subordinates to set mediocre targets it would lead to a worse overall outcome? In that case we could say that he is not fulfilling his duties as a manager and would argue that Joe is intentionally not doing what he can to maximize the divisions performance and thus acting unethically.
