...What is the value of public libraries in the digital age? Libraries provide enjoyment to different kinds of individuals. For some, it’s the feeling of being alone and escaping into their own world. For others, it’s just feeling of a quiet environment with the pleasure of enjoying a great book. Now days, the perception of libraries has changed, it is no longer just a repository of books. Libraries provide more resources than just books, they allow for learning and social gatherings and they move along with time. Though libraries are still very much about loaning out books and providing information, with the digital age in full swing it is done in a different way. Times have changed and with that so have the library. With new technologies emerging, are libraries destined to fade into oblivion? Or will they been seen as more relevant than ever? When asked what comes to mind when you hear the term ‘library’, many respond ‘books’. I defiantly did. Sure, many books can be found ranging from fiction novels to non-fiction, children’s books, culture books, historic books, magazines and so forth but libraries really do provide more than just book. Today’s world has shifted from a printed word to on line. Many books are now being digitalised and accessed on line. The Taiga Forum Steering Committee made claims that before 2011 “All information discovery will begin at Google, including discovery of library resources” and that “There will be no more libraries as we know them.” Many question...

...Bibliographic Essay Reference: Lushington, N. (1993). Getting It Right: Evaluating Plans in the Library Building Planning Process. Library Administration & Management , pp. 159-163. Summary This article endeavors to show how library users and staffs be involved in the planning sequence. The collaboration between the architect and library staffs through the plan review process, aims to maximize the function of the interiors of the library. The library facility improvement emphasizes on public self-service convenience and improvement of staff productivity. Reaction Planning for the sake of improving a facility or an establishment is indeed a challenging role. It requires a smart objective aligned with practicality as upgrading needs funding and time. In our generation, technology regime is stretching. We eagerly invest in internet connections, device replacement and skill enhancement making the physical upkeep of library last on the list. As a future librarian staff, I know that it is my responsibility to maintain and further develop the place of adventurous learning which is the library. When I read about the article, I had learned that we could have an alliance with the architects since; they have the necessary skill to create the “perfect” design. Of course, it still needs the idea of the library staffs, which listening and cooperation takes place. The Librarian staffs may include the librarian, consultants and assistants. It is interesting how the place...

...CAVITE LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Undergraduate Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship Cavite State University Imus, Cavite In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology JENNIFER ACEBO DYAN JESSICA LIM JOBIN DEL ROSARIO INTRODUCTION In today’s modern age where computer has become a way of life, it is evident that a majority of country’s institution still do not adapt high technology. Particularly in some schools, library transactions are still done on paper. We all know that modern school libraries are operating at great pace striving to serve as many students as possible with the best of their abilities. But as the years rolled by, the number of study has grown and the manual method of managing student and book records is no longer practical. A Library Management System is a system that makes use of information technology to perform managerial objects. The main goal of a library management information system is to store, organize, share and retrieve vital information needed to perform daily operational functions of the library. St. Matthew Academy of Cavite does not have one. Since library has a very large number of books and large number of members, it is impossible for librarians to handle day to day activities manually. Therefore, a library management...

...order to receive library and libraries in the results. This brought up over 32,000 results - I narrowed the search down to 2012-2017, Full Text, and Academic Articles to start - which brought it down to about 4,600. I knew that I did not want young adults or children, nor did I want collection development articles, which unfortunately consisted of many of the results. The first article I found was Self-Censorship in Selection of LGBT-Themed Materials by Jennifer Downey. While this article is not a library service, per say, it does speak pointedly about how librarians should treat the idea of LGBT lifestyle in their performances, whether it is purchasing materials or seeking out the community....

...Composition CM-220 Unit 2 Assignment March 31, 2013 Death Penalty My “Big Idea” topic is on the death penalty. My thesis statement is: Capital punishment is controversial and people have many different feelings about it but I believe that the death penalty is beneficial to society and the public and that the United States should continue to use capital punishment. When doing research for an essay paper it is important to use reputable sources and avoid unreliable or opinionated web sites or articles, such as Wikipedia and Answers.com. Areas or items I will use to do research for my death penalty paper will be the U.S. Department of Justice, Amnesty International, CNN news reports and articles, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Pro-death Penalty web site. The Kaplan library has a Homeland Security Digital Library database which might contain some information that I can use and the Newspaper Source database is bound to have some pertinent information. The Kaplan library also has an abundance of articles and reports as well as a database with news and current topics I can explore for information. To get an idea of some material readily available in the Kaplan library database I did a keyword search on “pro death penalty” articles and three periodicals came up that I am going to review and they are: Top Ten Death Penalty Myths: The Politics of Crime Control; Debating the Death Penalty: Should America Have Capital Punishment; and Capital Punishment: A Century of...

...1982 that "the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone." A movie studio sued Sony for manufacturing and selling the Betamax, the first widely marketed VCR. The case went all the way up to the Supreme Court, which in a 5-4 decision finally made it clear that using a VCR to tape TV shows was fair use. The decision not only legitimized the new consumer technology, and all the benefits it brought to the public, but also ended up helping those same movie studios earn billions of dollars from the home video market that the VCR enabled. It's worth remembering that case when thinking about the lawsuit filed yesterday against Google by the Author's Guild, for digitizing copyrighted books from libraries and making them searchable online. (Although the books are searchable, no more than a handful of sentence-sized snippets can be read online, unless the book is in the public domain or the publishers give permission for more to be viewable.) Once again, the issue boils down to fair use in a new application that could greatly benefit the public and bring new revenues and other benefits to copyright holders. While this particular issue has not yet been decided in court, and various legal scholars have taken both sides of the issue, Google has what looks like a good case for fair use both for the service itself and for the digitization necessary to provide it. In the actual service, the snippets provided to readers...

...property but also protect the consumer from viruses, malware and adware. Many consumers feel that these restrictions should not be in place, or should be less restrictive so that consumers can have some freedom over their personal use once they have paid a fair market price for digital property. Intellectual property needs to be protected. Owners are rightfully concerned about unlawful copying and distribution, without compensation, of their works. As techniques and technologies improve and increase to protect intellectual property virtually all copy-protection schemes are cracked. 1 Piracy continues to be a lucrative market both here in the United States and overseas where digital rights protections and enforcements are much more lax. Still, many executives feel as if DRM is useless in the protection of music and movie property. Some have gone as far as offering their propertied without DRM...

...Overview: Commas The comma is the most frequently used punctuation mark, but it is also the most often misused. Commas make reading sentences easier because they separate the parts of sentences. Commas with Independent Clauses Use a comma before the coordinating conjunctions and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet when they join two independent clauses. (Remember that an independent clause must have both a subject and a verb.) Independent clauses: The instructor put us in small groups, and she gave us a new assignment. Independent clauses: The essay was difficult to read, but I learned some new vocabulary words. Hint: Do not use a comma when a single subject has two verbs. Single subject: The instructor put us in small groups and gave us a new assignment. The coordinating conjunction (and) joins two verbs, but not two independent clauses. Only if the second verb has its own subject should you add a comma. Independent clauses: The instructor put us in small groups, and she gave us a new assignment. Each verb has its own subject, so and joins two independent clauses. Notice the comma. Commas with Items in a Series Use commas to separate items in a series of items joined by a coordinating conjunction. This means that you should put a comma between all items in a series. Series of nouns: The class required that we read two novels, twenty short stories, and twelve poems. Series of verbs: The students exchanged their essays, read them, and gave each other suggestions...

...The Censorship of Public School Books The imagination of children across the United States rests inside the hands of not only books within public schools, but books within the hands of the government controlling these public schools. Censorship of books in public schools has been a controversial issue for decades; in fact, governments have already gone so far as to ban certain books in public schools. While some believe that censorship is necessary to keep students from being exposed to explicit content, others believe that any content of any book is acceptable for students. However, the content provided within books should be considered with grade level. Even though there may be books that contain explicit or mature content, applying censorship...

...principles of providing health care insurance and services in Canada (Duckett, 2012, p. 10). There are five principles that make up the Canada Health Act and they are as follows: Public Administration, Comprehensiveness, Universality, Portability and Accessibility (Duckett, 2012, p. 11). The first principle of the Canada Health Act is Public Administration and the main elements of this principle are that it establishes rules for how a health care insurance plan can be formed, their responsibilities and how they will be reviewed (Duckett, 2012, p. 12). Public administration constrains the provincial governments as they have to appoint and audit insurance plans to make sure they are non-profit and providing the appropriate services (Duckett, 2012, p 12). The key issue with this principle is that only the insurer is written to be public, meaning that health care professionals can run their businesses privately forcing Canadians to pay extensive out of pocket expenses (Duckett, 2012, p. 12). The second principle of the Canada Health Act is Comprehensiveness and the main element of it is that health care insurance plans “must insure all insured health services provided by hospitals, medical practitioners or dentists” (Duckett, 2012, p. 12). Unfortunately a key issue with this principle is that it states “necessary services” is covered but this is a broad term so other aspects of health care such as prescription drugs or long term care are up in the air for coverage (Duckett, 2012, p. 13)...
