...Sweatshop is Conflicts With the Moral Standards PMP 400 Quan Zhang ( Lyla) Royal Roads University Elvira Perrella March 9, 2015 Sweatshop is Conflicts With the Moral Standards Green, B., & Norton, S. (2011). Reading. In. W, Anne & M. Laura ( Eds.), Essay essentials with readings (pp. 336- 341). Toronto, ON: Nelson Education Ltd. In the article, before the research, like many people, the author’s attitude was old, but after the research, the author’s attitude changed. The author chose the country of Bangladeshi to illustrate her point that working in a sweatshop can be a positive experience for women in developing countries by focusing primarily on one country. First, she argued that sweatshops offer jobs for women and give them the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives. Second, women can experience some independence about managing their finances and choosing their marriages although they have the small income. In this article, the author used others’ opinion, details and facts to develop her topic. The data and cases were enough to prove the argument, and the evidence was very creditable and believable. Although this article argued in the opposite way with me, it gave my article a new perspective about the sweatshop labors. What's more, the author gave me a good evidence about counterargument, which work at the sweatshop is better than no jobs. Then I can refutation this counterargument that the sweatshop conflicts with the moral...

...Are Sweatshops Beneficial? January 22, 2016 Situation Analysis What I generally know about sweatshops is they are a horrible place to work. They are the lowest of the low. You work long hours for barely any money. For my audience, being my instructor and fellow classmates, I would assume they know at least that much, more or less. For the instructor’s expectations of my paper would include a couple of things to me. First and foremost a complete understanding of the chosen core reading. Within that I will be able to educate my audience more in depth of this subject being sweatshops. Another instructor expectation would to do all that within a well-organized, proper formatted paper. As for my audience expectations I expect they would to be properly informed on this subject before I put my personal opinion in the paper. I find this subject to be especially relevant to today’s world because we are affected by it daily. A lot of the mainstream products we have and use are made by companies that have sweatshops overseas. Most people would be interested in this because of what we buy can have an effect on the workers. Even though we don’t see it first-hand here in Indianapolis, Indiana, it does matter us as a human being. With this paper I hope to enlighten my fellow classmates on the core reading. Since the paper is more pro-sweatshops I will give some of the cons to it as my response. I want this paper to help educate the reader so they can make a more informed opinion on...

...working conditions has caused people to form groups to make standards for every country. These groups are fighting against sweatshops and fighting for labor right on behaves of the poor. A couple of the larger groups are, The Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights, The International Labor Rights Forum formally non-as the National Labor Committee. While there are people fighting against sweatshops, there are also people fighting for sweatshops and educating people on the impact that they have in the communities and in the countries. So what is a sweatshop? According to Global Exchange (2015) sweatshops can defined in many different ways: “The US Department of Labor, a sweatshop is any factory that violates more than one of the fundamental US labor laws, which include paying a minimum wage and keeping a time card, paying overtime, and paying on time. The Union of Needle trades Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE), the US garment workers union, says any factory that does not respect workers’ right to organize an independent union is a sweatshop. Global Exchange and other corporate accountability groups in the anti-sweatshop movement would add to this definition any factory that does not pay its workers a living wage—that is, a wage that can support the basic needs of a small family.” What countries and companies are being affected by these anti-sweatshop groups and what is considered a “living wage”? A few of the countries that are affected are: Thailand, the Philippines...

Benjamin Powell and David Skarbek• Department of Economics San Jose State University San Jose, CA 95192-0114 benjamin.powell@sjsu.edu ABSTRACT Many studies have shown that multinational firms pay more than domestic firms in Third World countries. Economists critical of sweatshops have responded that multinational firms’ wage data do not address whether sweatshop jobs are above average because many of these jobs are with domestic subcontractors. In this paper we compare apparel industry wages and the wages of individual firms accused of being sweatshops to measures of the standard of living in Third World economies. We find that most sweatshop jobs provide an above average standard of living for their workers. David Skarbek is an economics major at San Jose State University and intern at the Independent Institute. ...Business Ethics Assignment 2 “Values, Labour & Business” Date of Submission: 9th October, 2014 The scenario that gained attention was in 2013 in Argentina, when the famous brand ZARA was found employing immigrants from Bolivia, who were trafficked to Argentina with the promise of wages in dollars and a better life style. However, the working conditions were inhuman and unacceptable which ultimately lead to the ban of the industry. Argentina has violated the labour violation by allowing the famous brand ‘ZARA’ to run operations in their country. The sweatshops were located in outskirts or in tourist areas. The production was run by the immigrants who were trafficked and were being used at these sweatshops. The working conditions were vulnerable and workers were asked to sleep inside the sweatshops with beds attached next to machines. Also, electrical wires hung from the walls creating a miserable situation for the workers and a risk of fire inside the shop. Adding to this, working hours were more than the minimum hours. Workers were forced to start early morning and then finishing late at night, working for almost 13 or more hours per day. The health and safety risk was also high for the workers, making the situations worst. Workers were also deprived of any freedom and social meetings and were made to stay inside the premises every time. ZARA broke the rules and standards that were set by Argentina. Firstly, by operating illegally in Argentina and secondly, the rules they...

...Final Exam Jessica ETH/316 Michael Scott Due June 30, 2014 Question #1 Introduction Ethics are considered the science in which one bases their beliefs, while morals are the choices made based on those beliefs. To be considered a virtuous person one must understand and demonstrate the “acceptable” beliefs of their society, by maintaining their personal character traits and standards, and by making and demonstrating good choices in their personal and professional lives. A person who is ethical and moral may not be considered virtuous, because of the differences between the three concepts. Virtuous Virtuous is used to describe a person who strives for excellence, in both their ethical and moral behaviors. Virtue, demonstrated as one who has good character traits, is often associated with ethical and moral beliefs, which is necessary for people to function in society with distinction. Virtuous examples are demonstrated in one who shows honesty, forgiveness, kindness, and respectfulness; among other exemplary character traits. A person who is virtuous shows commitment to doing the right thing, no matter what the cost; personal or not. Someone who is virtuous does not bend to desires, urges, or impulses, but acts according to their principles and values. Ethics Ethics are the rules and principles that govern the actions of people in comparative societies, while morality may differ from person to person. ...for the day and return home. It was a beautiful afternoon and the workers were about to hear the end of the day bell to be dismissed and head home. Around 4:40 pm to be exact, there was a dropped cigarette or match that ignited New York’s deadliest workplace accident to date. If it weren't for the carelessness and ignorance of those in charge of the factory and the conditions, this accident could have been prevented and just under 150 innocent lives could have been saved. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory took up the eighth, ninth and tenth stories of the Asch building in 23-29 Washington place, at Washington square East in the heart of Manhattan. (trianglefire.ilr.cornell.edu, “SWEATSHOPS & STRIKES BEFORE 191.”) The owners of this factory, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris profited greatly off of the sweatshop quality work of the young women. These women, a large portion of whom didn’t speak English because they were immigrants, worked about 14 hours for a workday. These hours were worked toiling in cramped, unhealthy conditions that have clearly been proven hazardous. They earned at most two dollars a day, greatly under what their male counterparts earned,...

...Nike in Indonesia An interesting reference was made to capitalism in a documentary about Indonesian Nike sweatshops; capitalism was referred to as “the survival of the fittest.” Capitalism is an economic system where the majority of the means of production are owned privately, production is guided, and income is distributed mostly through the operation of markets; in this case capitalists would be the “fittest.” However, there are two more types of people: laborers and consumers. Laborers are those who sell their labor to the capitalists, ideally for livable wages, and consumers are those who purchase the goods or services that are demanded. Ironically, capitalism would be non-existent if it was not for laborers and consumers but these are the people that are seen as “not fit enough.” There are different approaches to capitalism; one of them is called outsourcing. Companies outsource because “outsourcing can be such an approach and one of the strategies that can lead to greater competitiveness. (Ahmad)” Outsourcing can help firms because products that may cost one amount to create may have a significantly lower production cost in another country due to resources that are available in that geographic location. However, as the living necessities and wages rise in the United States, companies like Nike have decided to outsource their labor to take advantage of lower safety standards and a cheaper work force; “Nike employs approximately 23,000 people worldwide…it has been accused...

...Mr. Ernesto Saborio Business 600 Final Paper August 27, 2012 By Keith Alston In today's workplace, communication is the key of every aspect of your job. With the increased globalization of workplace settings across most industries, today’s managers need a more precise understanding of intercultural communication in an effective management strategy. It is important that managers proactively engage in communication skills assessment and make necessary adjustments in order to address the current needs of today’s increasingly diverse workforce. When assessing intercultural communication, it is important to have a plan in place and keep these points in mind like knowing your team and doing your homework. While getting to know as many cultures as possible is a noble endeavor, in reality managers are strapped for time like everyone else. If your functional outsourcing group is diverse, or you have recently hired a new group of employees, or your company is reaching out to more overseas investors, then you have a great opportunity to develop more effective intercultural communication skills that will be most applicable to your team. Just as in any group, there are differences among individuals, and understanding general distinctions within a cultural group is important. Do your homework without singling out individuals. One major area is religious beliefs. After honing their own intercultural skills, managers should be able to lead effective training sessions to explain nuances...

...Introduction The Zara case talks about the Spanish Retail giant Inditex which had grown over a period of 5 years from 1996-2001 with CAGR of ~26% (Exhibit 7:case), mainly riding on the success of its largest retail chain Zara. The main driving forces behind Zara's success were the simple business model (vertically integrated with short cycle times) ensuring high speed and design flexibility. Among all its chains, Zara is the most profitable and internationalized chain with over 500 stores in 30 countries (Exhibit 10:case) comprising ~40% of Inditex's store. However it contributed over 76% of Inditex's sales and over 85% of Inditex's EBIT (FY01) which clearly shows its operational efficiency. Issues Related to Product Development 1. High Capital Requirement (Low Asset turnover): Unlike its competitors, Zara owned much of its production and most of its stores. This led to the company having very low RoA compared to its competitors since it had to invest in its own factories (~20%) Particulars | Gap | H & M | Benetton | Inditex | Net Margin | -0.06% | 9.60% | 7.05% | 10.47% | Asset Turnover | 1.82 | 1.96 | 0.74 | 1.25 | Return on Assets | -0.11% | 18.78% | 5.25% | 13.07% | Moreover its optimistic revenue growth targets of 20%+ with like to like sales expected to witness only 5% to 7% growth meant that any new product had to be sold through additional expenditure on increased selling space. Recommendation: On the cost front, investments in assets can be minimized...
