...Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis was the idea of childhood innocence being lost and the emotional change that occurs when becoming an adult. I will analyse the emotional transformation of Marji during the time of rebellion in Iran. Specifically, there is a pivotal moment in the book when Marji finds one of her uncle’s cigarettes and smokes it as an act of rebellion against her mother and this is the scene I will be focusing on. The whole story leading up to this moment has been Marji hearing societal views from her family and her peers rather than developing them on her own. Through the rebellion against her mother, she is paving a path for her independence and individual views towards conflict. This shows the pivotal transition from a once innocent and clueless child a much more mature and grown independent woman forming opinions and views for herself. The first image of the scene shows Marji with a lit cigarette in her mouth. She says, “As for me, I sealed my act of rebellion against my mother’s dictatorship by smoking the cigarette.” (117) This image marks the beginning of her innocence being lost as she turns into a woman who is able to form her own views and commits acts of resistance against values she does not agree with. This small act of rebellion with the cigarette is a direct correlation with Marji’s desire to grow up in society and become independent. The expression on her face shows not only her rebellion towards a dictator that is her mother but also a higher dictator...

...ways, allowing Canada’s reputation around the world to become more independent, strong, and connected as a country. When Canada defeated the Germans at the battle of Vimy Ridge, the world saw us as a more independent country. The battle showed that we did not need Britain, and surprisingly, we ended up “emerging from the shadow.” For many years and through many battles, we depended on Britain and their guidance; however, Vimy was different. We came up with our own plan of action. We gathered strong, Canadian troops and generals, trained them properly so that everyone knew their own job, built our own trenches and brought our own artillery. The great Canadian Commander of the Canadian Corps by the name of Sir Arthur William Currie wanted and effectively tried to keep the Canadian troops separate from the British troops. These were all acts of Canadian independence. Our nation truly showed that we could fight and win against a very strong enemy and without our motherland helping us. Furthermore, during the battle, it was all Canadian soldiers, from one side to the next. It showed our Canadian independence because we did not have any troops from Britain. Canada showed the world that we were an independent nation because of this brave battle, in which we fought under our own leadership. Not only were we proving that we were an independent nation who would not take orders from anybody else, we were also demonstrating that we...

...household patterns in the United States are anticipated to change over the next few years The change in household in the United States of American is becoming very drastic. There are several reasons why this is happening and there is some research that will prove this point. The percentage of family household was 90 % back in 1940 and it went down to 66.4%. This is a big difference because that it was 9 out of 10 were family households and now it is 6 out of 10. Also, another percentage change that is very overwhelming is the married couple with children. Back in 1940 that percentage was 42.9% and it went down to 20.2%. All of the percentages based on the family households are going down except the single parent household....

...Why it is important that I understand what independent learning is? By: Catia Marques As Social Creatures we have the desire to learn, this desire is cultivated during our early development when we learn, through participation (Berk 2008). In these early stages of learning, cognitive, metacognitive and effective skills are developed. These are vital skills for a student to comprehend independent learning. Knowing and understanding the value of ‘independent learning’ has been considered the core basis for a successful academic journey. In other words, ‘independent learning’ is the foundation for students becoming confident self-regulated life-long learners, Koper and Tattersall (2004). Although, ‘independent learning’ is not a new concept, Broad, (2006) believes that there seems to be a lack of agreement on what it actually means. However, the intention of this paper, therefore is to analyse the meaning of ‘independent learning’ and the important influence it has on a student’s academic performance. This paper will also evaluate the impact of teaching modes on the learner’s education experience. Therefore in order to understand the importance of ‘independent learning’, one must look into its meaning to fully comprehend its value and benefits. Kesten,(1987) defines ‘independent learning’ as the “acquisition of knowledge free of external control by a self-motivated learner that willingly and appropriately identifies and uses resources available to make decisions to meet...

...Russian-American novelist, philosopher, playwright and screenwriter. In her novel, Anthem, It shows a way of putting a society as a whole to function the same and think the same way where no one can be independent. One of the main characters was Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000. Equality 7-2521 is described with the pronoun “they” as in not being his own person, as well as the other characters who are also described with the pronoun “they.” He’s strong, independent, and intelligent who ends up falling in love with liberty 5-3000, who he describes as “the golden one.” Even though Equality knows it is a sin to think the way he does, he does it anyway because of his “cursed wish to know.” Equality slowly becomes more independent as he’s falling in love with Liberty 5-3000. ...Unit 3: Thinking Report ‘Scottish independence’ Lauren Pratt – 1200370 As the SNP came to authority four years ago there has been a surge of interest across the country. Becoming independent will mean the people who care most about Scotland will be taken the decision about our future. A debate was presented by Stewart Hosie, a Member of Parliament for Dundee East, who was in favour of the motion besides Jenny Marra, who was the second presenter, who is a member of the Scottish Parliament for Dundee North East, Scottish Labour, was in opposition to the motion. Stewart Hosie gave an analytical, quantitative and fact driven argument. Jenny Marra gave a biographical, personal and historical argument. Both played a conception of their audience as largely conservative. In the debate ‘It is time for Scotland to become independent,’ presented on the 17th of September at University of Abertay, Stewart Hosie stated that for many countries, independence is taken for granted, and Scotland should be given that opportunity also. The biggest part of his argument was a number of statistics which he used to show the sustainability and competency to succeed of an independent Scottish nation by use of taxation, and by exploitation of the North Sea. He encouraged that large manufacturing plants should be returned to Scotland, and through these opportunities, this nation would thrive if no longer dependent on the rest of the UK. On the other hand Jenny Marra took a less statistical approach...

...handling money, and most importantly making mistakes are the least of the impending responsibilities that coincide with adulthood. At the end of the day, you only have yourself to fall back on, so it is exceedingly important to be able to handle things on your own and be secure with who you are and what you believe in. It is extremely empowering knowing that you are in control of your own life choices, and it is much more beneficial to accept the opinion of the voice inside your head rather than the berating words of others....

...Independent health care providers are facing more challenges than ever before. With changes in payment models and reimbursement methods, competition with a large group of employed physician practices, and changes in patients’ insurance coverage, a practice can be at risk for decreased revenue and increased financial instability. Fortunately, having an efficient Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) process and integrated electronic health records (EHRs) can help mitigate financial risk. Whether we like it or not, reimbursement policies for physicians and their practices are changing. To stay relevant, independent healthcare providers must keep up or get left behind. A recent article in Healthcare Dive touches upon today's ever-changing regulations...

...The United States was established July 4th, 1776 as a new nation. From that point as a young and independent country they have been exposed to tremendous development; by the means of economic expansion and influence in other nations they have formally recognized as a world power. Through America's struggle to industrialize they have undergone much progression and reform; although there are many important advantages and disadvantages, the prospects of becoming a world power outweigh the challenging consequences. America began as a small colony of settlers seeking sanctuary from the monarchical government of the united kingdom, however as they grew independent from the rule of their king they formed a new nation. The rise of imperialism gave way to the united states territorial expansion, and a swell in immigration, which ultimately increased the new nations population; this increase helped the US in emerging into a world power because of its economic benefits, such as unskilled workers taking over labor intensive jobs being payed at lower wages. An example of this is when the...

...Some people thinks that if you want to independent, you must live alone.Because you can deal with things by youeself and make a plan about your life. However, this author thinks that singles can learn independence while living with parents.I disagree with him. He thinks that in most cases, when a child starts working after a lengthy period of tertiary education, his parents would be getting old. These seniors would need someone to take care of them and to take them to medical appointments, for example. The best candidates to do so are their own children. If people continue living with their parents even after becoming financially independent, they can ensure that their parents have someone to talk to and do things with. But I have different opinions from him.Maybe we can become independent while living with our parents,it also has a problem. Our parents will prepare everything for us,we cannot get a chance to do by ourselves. It is highly likely that singles will quickly learn to be independent if they live away from their parents. The author believes that if we live away from our parents,we won't have free time to accompany them.I disagree with this point.Because we can go back home on weekend and have a dinner with parents. We just move out of our parents,we do not sever ties with parents. And Dr Lee Siew Peng suggests that it's a good idea for singles to move out of their parents' homes and live on their own, as this independence can make them more attractive to a potential life partner...

...The Workshop I attended on July 24th was called “The Graduate’s Guide to Financial Success” and my instructor was Brenda Williams. Out of the whole thing, I think the most important subject that was important for me would be building credit. She mentioned that we should start building credit by our the beginning of our senior year, which I was semi-surprised about. We have to learn how to start becoming financially independent, and learning how to overcome that challenge. Not only is building good credit a must, but it will help you qualify for loans, auto insurance, rental applications, cell phone plans, and it can even affect whether you get a job. She listed out steps, but didn’t go into much detail on how we can build our good credit. The fist step is to become an authorized user on your parent’s account, which I’m currently in the process of doing. The reason for being an authorized user on my dads account is considered “piggybacking”, when my dad has good credit my credit gets a boost. For some, this is the only choice when it comes to building credit. The second step for me would be to open up my own credit card, if I can provide proof of income. Full responsibility will fall on me then. We also learned why good credit is important. Lenders, employers, landlords, and insurance companies all use your credit report or your credit score to decide if they want to approve your application. First off, having too much credit debt will leave a negative mark on your report and can...

...are two kinds of clauses – independent and dependent. A dependent clause has a subject and verb just like an independent clause, but it can’t stand alone because it begins with a dependent word such as after that, so that although, though unless as, as if until because what, whatever before when, whenever even though where, wherever how whether if, even if which, whichever in order that while since who, whom than whose Whenever a clause begins with one of the above dependent words, it is dependent. If we take an independent clause such as We finished the game. and put one of the dependent words in front of it, it becomes dependent: After we finished the game Although we finished the game As we finished the game Before we finished the game If we finished the game Since we finished the game That we finished the game When we finished the game While we finished the game The clause can no longer stand alone. It does not make a complete statement. It leaves the reader expecting something more. It is a fragment and must not be punctuated as a sentence. Any group of words that does not have a subject and a verb is also a fragment. Paid no attention to his parents (no subject) Joe thinking of all his problems (no adequate verb) Speeding along the highway (no subject and no adequate verb) The announcement that we had expected (no verb for the independent clause) You can correct...

...independence, are we really Independent ? During the formative years, I was under the guidance of my parents and was totally dependent on them. Their influenced has made me what I am today ! When I grew up and went to school, I was bounded by the rules and regulations. The same was applicable even for the college. At every point of time, I remember the quote, “Man is born free but lives in chains”. That time people used to say that all this will be helpful to me in becoming a good citizen and once I become an adult, I will be free and can live my life independently. On my 18th birthday, I was very excited that now I will be independent and will make a new world of my own, making all my decisions independently. But, was this really possible ? Soon my dreams were dashed to the ground. All that was around me was blood and more blood ! Every sight caused me immense pain and every time I questioned myself, are we independent ? Although we’ve fought for independence but still we aredependent much more than what we were before. I found the society to be very conservative, in reality it is not at all independent. Whatever I did, I was imposed to follow certain ethics and norms in life. The thought of doing something was always followed by the thought as to how the society would perceive me, my actions and my thinking. I just couldn’t do whatever I want because that can harm others mentally and physically thus making it rather difficult for me to take independent decisions. Every action...
