How could there ever have been a place where dangerous murderers and infamous criminals would go to to serve out their sentences but, yet, be closed as a prison because it it failed its objective - keeping prisoners “in”? Alcatraz Prison, built on Alcatraz Island and surrounded on all sides by water and difficult to escape from, was considered by many to be the “perfect” place to build a prison for the most dangerous of our citizens. It was called “The Rock” and is as infamous as some of it’s most famous prisoners, such as Al Capone. What made Alcatraz special was its location, its construction and its famous inhabitants. Alcatraz was meant to be the most inescapable prisons in the country but did not end up the way it was meant to. The prison was open to 1847 to 1963 because they couldn’t keep the prison stable enough to keep it open. This island is located in the San Francisco Bay in the state of California in the United States. Now since it is closed it is now a tourist attraction that you can visit. The only reason why this prison closed was because it was too expensive to keep as an active prison.
Al Capone was a prisoner of Alcatraz before they shut down. Capone was an american gangster who attained fame during the prohibition era as the co-founder and boss of the Chicago outfit. He was born in January 17 1899 and died in January 25 1947. He managed to keep his reign as the crime boss 7 years but then he was locked up for 6 ½ years until he was released.
