Americans coveted the the land upon which the Cherokee people lived, as did the Cherokee themselves which it goes without saying, is why, among more important things, they refused to sell. White settlers strong desire for the Cherokee land was to settle,but the ideas and dreams of wealth were never far behind. However, the intrusion into Cherokee territory became more sought after with the discovery of gold in Georgia soil in 1829. In the racist atmosphere of the U.S. as well as Georgia, another issue was states' rights.
