Imagine attending a candle light vigil for a loved one. Crying, hugging and trying to comfort surrounding family and friends while remembering the good times that you shared with the loved that has passed. All the while hoping and wishing that you soon wake from the nightmare that is playing out not knowing the nightmare doesn’t end there. A matter of seconds the cries and hugs turn to screams and falling to the ground praying the shower of bullets end. Praying everyone is okay only to realize that yet another loved is gone do to a bullet to the chest.

In November of 2015 Holley wanted to bring awareness about gun violence. He did this by making a walk from Battle Creek to Detroit and stopping to hold rallies about the issue along the way. Holley did not stop there, he has done other things in the community over the years to bring light to issues such as his one hundred and seventy mile journey to Chicago. This is not to mention his walk carrying a casket down the street to protest violence in the community. Holley says, “We live in a very violent society and acts of violence will never end unless we make it end”. Holley is right; as a community, we need to find a way to end this. The first thing as a community, we have to want to put an end to the gun use. We all have to put in the same effort towards making a change or things will continue to go

Gun Violence Argumentative Essay

...In 2018 alone, the United States has suffered 17 school shootings (Ahmed & Walker). Gun violence is greater in the US than in any other first world nation. In fact, when compared to other nations, the number of gun-related murders in the United States are at an all-time high (bbc.com). This goes to show that more government involvement has been shown to be necessary for the current political climate. In the past, when Congress became more involved and banned assault rifles, there was a fewer number of gun-related crimes (Ingraham). Stronger background checks and a ban on assault rifles must be implemented by Congress in order to lessen the current rise of gun-related crimes, as it has been proven to work in various other states and nations....

Gun Violence Argumentative Essay

...cause the eventual demise of our once great nation. This problem is gun violence. Which works much like an earthquake, as it can’t be predicted and hits the un-expecting citizens hard. But how might we as a nation prepare for these treacherous attacks by lunatics that in the end have clear motive? I believe I have the answer, in Japan where there are many earthquakes throughout the year; the children wear helmets to and from school. So why not apply that concept to the children of America. Much like the Japanese children who are trained to use their helmets effectively incase of an earthquake, we can train children to use guns that we give them in case of a shooting. Before tossing aside this argument as insulting, and...

Argumentative Essay: Gun Violence In The United States

...The Right to Kill In the United States there needs to be something done with the way people acquire guns and ammo. With the most gun violence in the industrialized world, we don’t seem to bat an eye. Every mass shooting in the United States is becoming a typical thing. Congress fails to pass any laws that make it harder for people to get guns. Many people believe that because it is our second amendment right to own a gun that everyone should have one, but they are blind to the fact that it is too easy for the wrong person to get one. If you stroll down to your local gun shop to buy a gun you have a large arsenal to choose from. Anything from semi- auto assault rifles to powerful hand guns. In order to buy one, an individual has to go through...

Argumentative Essay: Gun Violence In The United States

... we had begun to mourn the deaths of the five Dallas police officers gunned down while they protected protesters in their city. Ten days later, we as a Nation, were hit with more violence toward law enforcement officers. In the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a lone gunman shot six police officers, killing three and injuring three more. The suspect was linked to black separatism groups. He was shot and killed by a SWAT officer during a shootout with the police. Again I sat at home watching in disbelief and moving further into a darkened thought process. With this came a daunting realization. “There are some people who may want me dead.” Who wants to go to work each and every day and deal with this thought lingering in their...

Argumentative Essay: Chicago's Case For Gun Violence

...“Despite tough gun laws, the city is plagued by shootings and illegal firearms.”-Ali Elkin As you may know Chicago has had a lot of gun related deaths this year, which includes gang related, self defense, cop killings or just random shootings. Yes Chicago does have strict gun laws but can you use this to make a case for gun control? Just by looking at Chicago’s tough gun laws and its high rates of gun violence I don’t think you need proof that the problem can’t be legislated away.New Jersey governor Chris Christie offered a similar argument with gun control .Christie stated that “In many of the places around the country where they have the toughest gun laws, they have the highest violent crime rates. And we focus on a tragedy like this.It’s...

...during election season. This essay will examine the gun control issue. It will provide a brief history, statistics, and quotes from gun control experts to describe the present state of gun control in the United States. In addition, it will offer a brief analysis of gun control efforts. This examination and analysis will demonstrate that stronger gun control is necessary to reduce gun violence and ensure the safe use of guns in the United States. “Since the American Revolution, when colonists went to war against Great Britain, the right to bear arms has been central to – and controversial in – American culture. Take a look back over milestones in America’s relationship with and regulation of firearms”. Following by U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, news reports. Gun control is nothing new in the United States, and neither is the controversy surrounding the control of gun ownership. According to an author , gun control has been an issue since at least 1934, when Congress passed a law restricting machine guns and sawed-off shotguns . An Author points out that after the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, a law was passed that banned the importation of inexpensive handguns called "Saturday Night Specials;" in 1993, the Brady Bill was passed, which required background checks for handgun purchases; and a 1994 law banned the sale of semiautomatic assault guns . Since 1994, there has...

Egoism

...selfish reason. I experienced such a theory during my teenage years, and I will testify on the event. I was walking to father's house late at night in my local neighborhood of which I grew up in. Randomly an act of violence was happening in yards away, I hear several popping sounds followed by screamimng and running. It takes seconds to realize those sounds are bullets being fired at someone, and this random individual is running away from this gun man. I unconsciously spring into hero mode to aide the victim aide (with no regard to my personal safety) to make sure she is not fatally wounded. After the superman effect has worn off I thought to myself “ you did good today with this selfless act”, but my psychological egoistitc thinking was waiting for the 6 o clock news reporter to give details of my heroic deed, as well as my hero banner and community parade. Unfortunately none came, instead I was detained by the police because they thought I was the perpetrator 1. Violent Media Is Good for Kids

...other’s to show and support that violence is a good thing for kids. When a violent act occurs, the first thing people do is to place the blame on violent media; such as movies, television shows, video games, and comic books. People direct their attention to murderous, gruesome, horrific acts that occur in those types of media. They only want to blame certain media outlets because it is easier to find a reason. Gerrard Jones thinks quite the opposite. He tries to persuade the audience that in spite of all the people’s negative intensions about violent media and things they say about its effect on society, violent media is actually beneficial for the younger ones. His main argument to support his thesis is that violent media has certain benefits and positives that most people outlook. His thesis expresses that violent media is not a bad influence on children, but it does however; allow them to better express themselves. The purpose of his argument is to show the benefits of exposing our children to violent content. Violence helps mould children into an individual who can control their rage better and can even become well rounded individuals. He deems superheroes as acceptable forms of violence because they give kids the idea of powering through hurdles and other barriers in their lives by being inspired by the actions. It prepares the children for violence in reality and teaches them how to control their rage. Various violent games, movies, toy guns can prove handy in children to...

Rain Clouds

...Between the World and Me has solidified the empathy needed for White Americans to “ultimately stop themselves.” What the book doesn’t do, however, is give us the tools to do this, the tools needed to spread the message to unbelievers and recreate the empathy that Coates displays so well. Of course, this was not the purpose of the book; it’s the purpose of Coates’ essay “The Case for Reparations,” where he uses historical research and evidence to make the argument for American slave restitution. In the piece, Coates provides the necessary tools for White Americans to believe and push the progressive notions warranted in order to make a difference in the African American community, and it accomplishes this with little visceral empathy—just research, history, and logic—differing from Between the World and Me. And so, wherever “The Case for Reparations” falls, Between the World and Me rises in its place, and vice versa, making them perfect companions for each other, a companionship key for white readers,...

Dree Code

...Introduction The dress code for junior and high schools has been a hot debate over the years. It has sought to address various issues and have resulted in different levels of controversy. For instance, in the early 1970s boys with long hair sometimes got attracted to their classmates. Resultantly, schools required young men to cut their hair short. Moreover, at the beginning of the 1990s several organizations and parents pushed for a dress code as a strategy to curb gang-related violence (Valdez, 2015). Over the years, the desire to create a professional school environment and reduce struggle over designer clothes made uniforms and dress codes become a familiar topic. However, identical strategies are more restrictive than dress code policies. Dress codes are strict as in the case of schools in California and Napa. For instance, schools in this areas required students to put on solid colors and logos or banned images on clothes. The primary objective of this argumentative essay is to provide adequate evidence that there should be dress codes in both junior and high schools. Claim 1: dress code may increase student safety and reduce crime. Each year several schools adopt a certain form of dress code. Although some challenges are emerging on the constitutionality, court’s rulings have supported dress codes that are implemented properly and can prove to be rationally consistent with a legitimate purpose (Valdez, 2015). Moreover, the safety of students appears...

Domestice Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S.

...Vazaskia V. Crockrell-Caldwell Prof. Margaret Griesse T SOC 455: Sociology of Gender 8 December 2014 Domestic Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S. This essay will explore the cause and impact of domestic violence in the lives of black women in the U.S. It will provide general information, such as the definition of domestic violence, statistics, and resources to help survivors leave domestic violence relationships. Following the review of the literature I identify areas which need further research. Since I can remember black women have been characterized as mean and argumentative, but also strong and self-sacrificing for their families. Black families on TV were always portrayed as single mother households. In my community there was also a reoccurring reality of domestic violence against women. This was is in direct contrast to stereotypes I heard about white women, who were portrayed as weak, frail and needing to be protected. Examples include June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch. But what justified the brutality of domestic violence against black women then and now? In 2011, black females were murdered at a rate more than two and a half times higher than white females: 2.61 per 100,000 versus 0.99 per 100,000. [1] In the U.S. domestic violence against black women has escalated. In 2010, Marissa Alexander an African American woman shot a warning shot at the wall in order to scare Rico Gray, her estranged, abusive...

...11 Position Papers I f you like to argue, you will enjoy writing position papers and argument essays. The purpose of a position paper or argument essay is to explain both sides of a controversy and then argue for one side over the other. This two-sided approach is what makes position papers and argument essays different from commentaries (Chapter 10). A commentary usually only expresses the author’s personal opinion about a current issue or event. A position paper or argument essay explains both sides and discusses why one is stronger or better than the other. Your goal is to fairly explain your side and your opponents’ side of the issue, while highlighting the differences between these opposing views. You need to use solid reasoning and factual evidence to persuade your readers that your view is more valid or advantageous than your opponents’ view. In college, your professors will ask you to write position papers and argument essays to show that you understand both sides of an issue and can support one side or the other. In the workplace, corporate position papers are used to argue for or against business strategies or alternatives. The ability to argue effectively is a useful skill that will help you throughout your life. 221 CHAPTER AT–A–GLANCE Position Papers This diagram shows two basic organizations for a position paper, but other arrangements of these sections will work too.
