Argumentative Essay: Should School Start Later

...Should School Start Later According to the Center for Disease Control, CDC, inadequate sleep in teens can be related to obesity, immune system disruption, and migraines. It can also create health risk behaviors such as smoking, drinking, fighting, depression and suicidal thoughts. Teens’ sleep patterns are disrupted by the times that they have to get up in the morning. The early school schedule forces kids to get up earlier to catch a bus or get themselves ready. School districts should change the start time to later. First, later start times reduced the number of times kids were tardy or absent. It also minimized the dropout rate. According to the U.S. Department of Education, more than 84% of students graduated on time in 2016. Changing...

Argumentative Essay: Should School Start Later?

...Should School Start Later? As a child, have you ever been tired because you got up too early for school? Lately, school districts in America have been discussing school start times, specifically for middle and high schools. Most communities wonder, should the start of school be pushed later? Most schools in America start around the same time. Unfortunately, these schools also start before the recommended start time. While there may be inconveniences that come with pushing the time, there will be more benefits. Pushing school hours can enhance student grades and mental and physical health. School districts should move the start of school to a later time. According to NPR.org, pediatricians believe that starting school before 8:30 can affect...

Argumentative Essay: Why High School Should Start Later?

...teenagers not getting enough sleep has caused some schools to consider starting later. Teenagers are tired in school and could perform better if they were more awake in their early classes. Although teens don’t get enough sleep, schools should not start later because teens can go to bed earlier, transportation time and costs are reduced by some schools starting earlier, and they need time for after school activities or their grades will be affected. The argument for starting schools later is that teenagers are biologically determined to go to bed late and wake up late and thus don’t get enough sleep. Sixty percent of students under 18 complained about being tired and fifteen percent of students reported falling asleep in...

...Should people marry before they are 25 years old? Argumentative There is really no good reason to rush into marriage, but an increasing number of young people want to get married before they are 25. I believe that young adults are getting married before they are equipped with the skills to build a solid relationship that can last a lifetime. There are great advantages to getting married older. Firstly it enables people to concentrate on their education and get a degree and then a good job before contemplating marriage. This gives a solid financial foundation for the marriage and is likely to lessen concerns about money which lead to many arguments within a marriage. Secondly one has the opportunity to meet more people before getting married and ensuring that they have met the person that is right for them. For example at university students get the opportunity to meet hundreds of interesting friends from a variety of backgrounds. On average a university student meets 900 people, whereas at school there are relatively few people to meet and children only tend to socialize with their own class. Thirdly divorce is much higher, because they do not have the emotional maturity to communicate effectively and compromise. For example Britney Spears got married when she was 22 and was divorced 2 years later and has been in and out of psychological therapy ever since. ...Writing to Convince Argumentative and Persuasive Essays Sometimes we write to defend an opinion, to argue against somebody’s point of view, or to convince readers why and how we think a certain problem should be settled. The argument we develop should be a logical, properly thought-out presentation of ideas that makes a claim about an issue and supports that claim with evidence. Within this general frame, our argument consists of four basic components: (1) an issue, (2) a claim, (3) support, and (4) a recognition and refutation of the opposing view. A. The Issue. An argument is concerned with an issue – a case (like war, smoking, cloning, etc.) on which people hold opposite or different opinions. To build a convincing argument about an issue, it is essential that we be aware of the audience we are addressing: • Agreeing audience: When you write to people who already agree with your claim, the focus is usually to urge them to take a specific action and build emotional ties with them. • Neutral audience: In writing to a neutral audience, try to emphasize the importance of the issue and offer explanations that clear up your readers’ questions or misunderstandings about, or lack of interest in it. • Disagreeing audience: The most challenging audience combines people whose viewpoints contrast with yours; they may be hostile to your claim and have strong feelings about the issue. In writing to a disagreeing audience, your goal is to convince readers to consider...

Acquire skills for writing an effective argumentative essay rom August 1987 until January 2007, Alan Greenspan was chairman of the Federal Reserve Board (“the Fed”). Because any remark he made about U.S. monetary policy could cause markets all over the world to fluctuate wildly, he developed a complicated way of speaking that came to be known as “Fedspeak.” Here’s an example: It is a tricky problem to find the particular calibration in timing that would be appropriate to 2/9/2016 12:17 PM 3 of 56 stem the acceleration in risk premiums created by falling incomes without prematurely aborting the decline in the inflation-generated risk premiums.* Greenspan has admitted that such remarks were not really intended to be understood. Asked to give an example by commenting on the weather, Greenspan replied, I would generally expect that today in Washington, D.C., the probability of changes in the weather is highly uncertain. But we are monitoring the data in such a manner that we will be able to update people on changes that are important.* Page 70 2/9/2016 12:17 PM This tells us nothing about the weather...

...BUILDING EVIDENCE-BASED ARGUMENTS DEVELOPING CORE PROFICIENCIES ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS / LITERACY UNIT GRADE 7 “Doping can be that last 2 percent.” OD LL DUCATION www.odelleducation.com OD LL DUCATION Page 1 EVIDENCE-BASED ARGUMENTATION Literacy – the integrated abilities to read texts closely, to investigate ideas and deepen understanding through research, to make and evaluate evidence-based claims, and to communicate one’s perspective in a reasoned way – is fundamental to participation in civic life. Thus, the importance of a literate citizenry was understood and expressed by Thomas Jefferson early in the life of our democratic nation. Today, students face the prospect of participating in a civic life that stretches beyond the boundaries of a single nation and has become increasingly contentious, characterized by entrenched polarization in response to complex issues. Citizens have access to a glut of information (some of which is nothing more than opinion passed off as fact) and are often bombarded by bombast rather than engaged in reasoned and civil debate. Learning the skills and habits of mind associated with argumentation – how to conceive and communicate “arguments to support claims, using valid reasoning and sufficient evidence” [CCSS W1] as well as how to “delineate and evaluate the argument[s]” and “the validity of the reasoning and relevance and sufficiency of the evidence” presented by others [CCSS R8] – is therefore...

Child Nutrition

...Advanced Eng. November, 07 2011 Argumentative Essay Who said nutrition had anything to do with it? Nutrition education is a major environmental influence on the behaviors, physical and mental growth of in a child’s life. Before a child starts school, during the baby years, the food habits can have a major impact on choices that are made later on in life. For example, starting a baby on vegetables first rather then fruits, will lead the child to make a better nutritional choice when they approach the salad bar in first grade. “Studies support that good nutrition contributes to improving the wellbeing of children and their potential learning ability, thus contributing to better school performance.” (Rodrigo). Children are getting morbidly obese, and their behavior has changed for the worse. If the children are learning healthy eating habits with encouragement to make healthy eating choices, then obesity and chronic disease will decrease. These children can have the reduce impact of chronic diseases in adulthood. Eating healthy will help reduce stress and may even avoid smoking if they have encouragement on staying active. “Nutrition education is a key element to promoting lifelong healthy eating and exercise behaviors and should start from the early stages of life.” (Rodrigo). If health educators and teachers have a good sense of direction on teaching children about nutrition, then it is likely that these issues will improve. School should have a mandatory nutrition – based...
