This dilemma applies to this novel because even though Armando couldn’t afford the care he was receiving; the hospital couldn’t refuse to give it to him. Armando wasn’t expected to survive but he did and he wanted to live even if he was paralyzed for the rest of his life. Since he survived, he has become Hazel Mitchell’s problem. On page 160, it states, “Hazel’s job is to get uninsured patients out of the hospital as quickly as possible and … to see that their care costs as little as possible.” And on the next page it reads, “by the time Hazel sat down to analyze Armando’s bill, it had reached $57,020.86.” his bill sky rocketed every week until the hospital really could not afford to care for him anymore not to mention he had behavior issues.
