The arts, sciences, philosophy, and man being master of many things were all resurgence during this time. One particular painting to be analyzed for an example of Southern Italian style is Giuliano Burgiardini, Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist, 510. Giuliano Burgiardini painting conveys the typical Southern Italian style with its composition in a pyramidal fashion, the particular way the bodies are depicted, and use of chiaroscuro of shadowing that differentiates it from Northern style. To continue on forth, the composition of the painting must be taken into account as well as Giuliano use of color, light and shadow as evidence of Southern Italian style. It must be noted, the painting is considered historical because it is depicting a significant event in time whether or not the event actually took place. In this particular historical painting you see depicted Mary and Christ with Saint John the Baptist in a pyramidal formation. As I am preparing to finish this course I walk away with a greater appreciation for the art world. Art is all around, and we can all create majestic pieces we just need to express our inner most creative skill. As I visited the Art museums this semester my favorite of the two was the Pasadena Museum of California Art. The parking structure for the museum really sets up the individual for a treat! When I parked my car I spent about a half hour walking through the structure admiring all of the murals on the wall. My roommate actually accompanied me and we took a lot of pictures. It was really neat! What I love about this art museum is that you can really see the culture, of the art. The inside is an elegant white and the pieces featured are amazing. One piece in particular really stuck out to me. Robert Duncan made the piece, Wallpaper Design, in 1952-1954. While I was in the museum I read a little about Robert Duncan’s background, Interestingly enough, Robert Duncan was an American Poet, who traveled nation wide, before settling in San Francisco where he wrote his best book, “The opening of the field.” During his college years at Berkeley, Duncan was captivated by surreal art. When creating a piece of art, the artist has four roles to consider or fill. These roles are; the artist helps to show the world in a different way than others might see it, they create a visual record of the time period and area they are in, they make objects that have a given function and are ordinary look more appealing and lastly the artist gives meaning to ideas, thoughts or feelings that are considered immaterial. When an artist creates a piece of art with the role of showing you something you see often in a different way, they are trying to get you to think out of the box. The thing that stands out about this painting is that Christ is not adorned in fine clothing, nor does he even appear divine in any way. The surrounding people do not appear to be priests or divine, but are normal, plainly garbed, people. Upon moving my attention to other areas of the painting, I noticed the detailed landscape upon which this scene was set. The museum’s painting can be recognized as a northern painting, even without prior knowledge of the artist who painted it. Two distinct features in this painting are strongly indicative of a northern painting. One of these said features is the landscape setting. Northern works of art deal strongly with naturalism. The second indication that this may be a northern painting has to do with the people gathered around Christ. It is easy to tell that these individuals are merely common folk.
