2 Gothic cathedrals

I think the Cathedral has caught my eye. I am very intrigued by the way the 3D was built. When they built the high ceilings they weren’t thinking of man. They were built out of stone and masonry. They were thinking of god and were supposed to represent the King of Kings. This is the house of god and man is just visiting. There are many styles but I like the vaulted the best. It gives me a since of a way to God. The new architectural grammar was first coherently articulated in the ambulatory (chevet) of the royal abbey church of Saint-Denis, north of Paris, built under Abbot Suger between 1140 and 1144. Two concentric aisles are separated by slender columns: the outer aisle is covered by five-part and the inner aisle by four-part rib vaults. The resulting effect is one of clear spatial distribution and organic lightness: the bays are opened on all sides and the walls of the radiating chapels, no longer load-bearing. (Julien Chapuis)Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I have seen grey and tan color cathedrals. The main color is from the multi-color hand painted stain glass windows. The subject matter is to praise God or build a house to worship God. The Cathedral is the temple for god. It is supposed to draw you in and keep you. I think it is literally depicted because it is all abut God.
The message is that many Cathedrals look good but his/hers is going to be great. There are sometimes crosses put in the art work. I have seen the Virgin Mary in some of them. These buildings represent God so they have to look unreal to the human eye. “The mere detail of the Lancet style possesses the most exquisite loveliness of any style of architecture whatever. We might ransack all the edifices in the world, from the Treasury of Atreus to Henry VII's Chapel, and find nothing which can be for a

...The Human Figure in Art Student Name University The human figure in art, sculpture and other art forms involves the study and appreciation of the beauty of the human body (Human figure (aesthetics) , 2013). It can involve the body shape, including different postures, such as sitting, standing, sleeping, or even while in motion, walking or running. I think that the human figure is one of the most interesting and beautiful to look at, and it absolutely amazing to look at how much the human figure in art has changed over time. Different cultures believed that the human body was beautiful in different ways. Some show humans in the art as perfect and almost God like, while others show them in a more realistic form. Another amazing part about the human figure is not only are we observing the way a body looks, but also we are feeling the emotions that these characters are portraying. This is what makes human figure so fascinating. In the following essay I will be selecting fifteen examples of the human body in art. One of the oldest sculptures discovered to date, was carved using simple stone tools. It is a tiny limestone figurine of a woman named the Venus of Willendorf. This sculpture was named after its find spot in Willendorf Austria. It is said that the Venus of Willendorf was made anywhere between 28,000 and 25,000 BCE, and the artist is unknown. The sculpture is tiny, and features anatomical exaggeration. It typifies Paleolithic representations of women, whose...

Art Midterm Paper

...Midterm paper In BUSAN museum of art, there are several interesting artworks and among them, what I was impressed is the artwork named ‘a presage of happiness’ made from Park Yoonhee. This artwork is huge stacked of isomorphic cubes. And on the top of this artwork, arrangement for cube looks like stair. Material for cube looks like hard and somewhat opaque. When I was in front of those, I could just see the contour of my body. And there are not any additional shapes or patterns or colors. Actually when I saw this artwork, I just thought ‘what is this?’ In other words, I didn’t know what this means. It looks like some figures which I can see in math course-book in middle school. In addition to this feeling, after looking the title, I was curious how the name and this artwork can be matched. Usually when we thought about the happiness, the expression for this feeling is something bright. After reading brochure and talking with Prof. LEE, I realized that the artist wanted to criticize our way of living. When I did first online session and project for creative practitioner, creativity is related with changing perspective within understandable context. The artist broke ‘normal’ image for happiness in our mind and looked the way in which modern people live in critical manner. I think this artist is also creative practitioner in these contexts. It means this perspective is somewhat different for usual notion of happiness and in the way that criticism, it is understandable by expressing...

Art Analysis Paper

...Art Analysis Paper The Joan Brown’s “Noel In The Kitchen” is a painting. The medium of this art work is oil on canvas. The technique she used appears to be heavy brush strokes. The size of the painting is very large, approximately 8x5 Ft. It is a representational work, which displays a small child, two dogs and some regular attributes of a household kitchen. The image can be broken down into the few blocks. On the front, there is a little child, assumingly named Noel, reaching the top of the kitchen cabinet. He is surrounded by two dogs, one of them seating and looking away from the boy. Another dog is positioned next to Noel, towering over the child. The second block includes the floor of the room and the kitchen cabinet with dishes on the top. Third part of the image is the wall behind the desk. It appears to be shaded and out of focus. The overall intensity of colors happens to be fading towards the right side of the paining. It gives balance to the image by counterweighing the representative images on the left. The large kitchen cabinet is painted brightly red, immediately focusing viewer’s attention on itself as a center of composition. All figures are placed on the various levels, which provide space effect in relationship to the floor and vertical axis. The floor is painted with clear lines distinction in yellow, black and blue colors. By looking at the painting from some distance, the relationship between shapes is very thin and objects are highly recognizable. However...

Art Genre Paper

...Art Genre Paper Peaches University of Phoenix March 23, 2009 MMus   Abstract Expressionism Genre art evolved from the Dutch Baroque painters in the 17th century. The term “genre” generally refers to the pictorial representations in various media types that represent events of daily living. Such representations can be people, places, activities, parties, a building’s interior or a scenic outdoor setting. These scenes can be realistic, imagined, or even romanticized by the artist. This paper will examine abstract expressionism’s historical development and evolution of style, characteristics of the genre, influential styles or its influence on other styles, the influence of styles on three different visual or performing arts, and any significant contributions to the development and evolution of this style. Historical Development and Evolution of Style Abstract expressionism was developed in the context of diversity and an overlapping of sources and whose major contributors came from the 1930s. During this time “The Great Depression” had begun to yield two different art movements: Regionalism and Social Realism but neither of these appealed to this group of artists. This group was seeking significant content in their work. Having broken away from accepted conventions in both technique and subject matter, these artists used work that was monumentally scaled and reared reflections of their individual psyches. Valuing spontaneity and improvisation their style...

...Pamela Castillo September 16, 2015 Art and Society: Renaissance to Modern Art Art History Paper Assignment 1 The Era of the Italian Renaissance was a time of reawakening of the Renaissance man. The arts, sciences, philosophy, and man being master of many things were all resurgence during this time. One particular painting to be analyzed for an example of Southern Italian style is Giuliano Burgiardini, Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist, 510. Giuliano Burgiardini painting conveys the typical Southern Italian style with its composition in a pyramidal fashion, the particular way the bodies are depicted, and use of chiaroscuro of shadowing that differentiates it from Northern style. To continue on forth, the composition of the painting must be taken into account as well as Giuliano use of color, light and shadow as evidence of Southern Italian style. It must be noted, the painting is considered historical because it is depicting a significant event in time whether or not the event actually took place. In this particular historical painting you see depicted Mary and Christ with Saint John the Baptist in a pyramidal formation. The pyramidal formation and the fact that there are 3 figures were often seen in Southern Italian style. You can see Christ and St. John the Baptist as the corner base of the triangle and the head of Mary at the apex (Giuliano). A straight line can almost be drawn from the foot of Christ up to the head of Mary down to the foot of St. John the...

As I am preparing to finish this course I walk away with a greater appreciation for the art world. Art is all around, and we can all create majestic pieces we just need to express our inner most creative skill. As I visited the Art museums this semester my favorite of the two was the Pasadena Museum of California Art. The parking structure for the museum really sets up the individual for a treat! When I parked my car I spent about a half hour walking through the structure admiring all of the murals on the wall. My roommate actually accompanied me and we took a lot of pictures. It was really neat! What I love about this art museum is that you can really see the culture, of the art. The inside is an elegant white and the pieces featured are amazing. One piece in particular really stuck out to me. Robert Duncan made the piece, Wallpaper Design, in 1952-1954. While I was in the museum I read a little about Robert Duncan’s background, Interestingly enough, Robert Duncan was an American Poet, who traveled nation wide, before settling in San Francisco where he wrote his best book, “The opening of the field.” During his college years at Berkeley, Duncan was captivated by surreal art. Painter friends inspired him, to continue to make artwork using pencil, pen, and crayon. He also frequently illustrated his own books....

...Art Appreciation Art cannot be classified into one category, style, or period. Art is very diverse, ranging from the beginning of the human being to today. Through the years, art has evolved dramatically from stick figures and two dimensional animals to three dimensional sculptures and intricate paintings. The artwork featured at the Seattle Art Museum shows many different types of art and features several different periods in which these artworks were created. Two pieces of art that stuck out the most at the museum was Albert Bierstadt’s Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast and Robert Arneson’s Pool with Splash. Both of these pieces of art showed character and seemed to almost speak to the viewer. Although there are many different periods and types of artwork, Bierstadt’s and Arneson’s pieces were the most intriguing. Robert Arneson is an artist who was born and raised in California. Robert was “encouraged by his father to draw” (Sward), so he followed his father’s advice and began creating cartoons for a California newspaper. After attending California College of Arts and Crafts, he began teaching “for a local high school, where he became interested in ceramics” (Sward). Although Robert had an interest in ceramics, he soon showed that he wanted to break away from the rules and boundaries of sculpting. He was part of a group that created pop art with their talents. In 1977, Robert completed his work Pool with Splash, where he is able to demonstrate the pop art style. Pool with...

...Jacob D’Alessandro Museum Art Assignment Professor Huntington April 29th 2014 The Daiitoku Myoo “King of Wisdom” was an important figure to the Heian period of Japan during the late 12th century and followed along with the idea of Buddhism and the continuation of Japanese styled art. During the development of Japan culture the Japanese went through many eras of changes in art and religion that led up and developed the Heian period. These eras were called the Jomon period which dated between 10,500-300 B.C. during this era clay ceramics were used especially in the northeastern portion of Japan, the Yamai period also used clay figurines. ...R.G. Collingwood’s claim that true art expresses emotion while pseudo-art arouses emotion is true. Expression theorists believe that something is art if it expresses true emotion through the artist. There is a big difference between arousing emotion and expressing emotion. An important aspect to consider when thinking about the difference between the arousal and the expression of an emotion is the audience. The difference between pseudo-art and true art and their implications to society will be covered in this paper. First, it is important to distinguish the difference between an art and a craft. A craft is something that is planned out first and produced second with the intent of achieving a specific end result. From the very beginning...

Christian Art Research Paper

...Christian Art is an entryway into the artist’s emotions, dedication, and sacrifice, displaying their devotion and love for God. During the Middles Ages, artist expressed their feelings through paintings, mosaics, and sculptures. The rich colors, beautiful architecture, and carefully carved statues are just a few reasons Christian Art is important to the Gospel today. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith (Romans, 12:6). From the minute we start attending Sunday school, we are taught the stories of David and Goliath, Adam and Eve, and Jonas and the Whale. However, the crucifixion of Jesus is a hard story to endure, due to the reprehensible and inhuman beating and humiliation Jesus suffered. As a reminder of God’s love for us, he gave his only son Jesus as a payment for the sins of all his children. Would we appreciate Christianity in the same manner if this wicked act had not taken place? The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most important parts of the Bible. The torcher Jesus encountered on our behalf demonstrates the love and devotion our Lord has for each and every one of us....

In western and central Africa, sculptures are more popularly known. They are usually made of wood and then painted creatively, but they can also be made of metals, rocks, beads, mud, or other materials. By using natural resources from the earth, it is a symbolism of drawing power from the land to protect. Masks are used for “judiciary contexts” or for teaching children.
