1859 0 Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle born on 22 May 1859 to Irish Catholic parents, Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary Josephine Foley. His father worked for the Scottish Office of Works, Edinburgh. He was the third of nine children and the eldest son. Two sisters died in infancy.

1868 9 He was sent to a boarding school, Hodder Preparatory School, Lancashire.
Then he went to a Roman Catholic public school at Stonyhurst. The fees were paid by his uncle.

Doyle’s son, Arthur Alleyne Kingsley, was born in November 1892.

1893 34 Doyle’s wife Louise coughed up blood in the summer of 1893.
She had contracted tuberculosis.
In October 1893, his father died from an epileptic seizure.
Doyle began to show signs of interest in psychical research.
In December 1893, he killed off Sherlock Holmes.
But the massive outcry from the readers forced him to bring Holmes back from the dead in 1894.

1894 35 He began work on his “Brigadier Gerard” novel which would occupy him until 1902.
1897 37 He met Jean Leckie on 15 March 1897. She was then aged 34. He would eventually fall in love with her. But he refused to divorce Louise to marry her.

1900 40 On 28 February 1900, he sailed for Cape Town.
1902 42 On 24 October 1902, he was knighted by King Edward VII.
Doyle was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey.
1906 47 In January, Doyle stood as a candidate for Parliament in Border Burghs, a Scottish constituency. He was defeated by a narrow margin.
