Review “Avatar is set in the Year 2154 on the distant planet Pandora.” (French, 2009) The planet has been inhabited by Humans and was targeted because it vast supply of unobtainium, which is an energy source that the Human desperately are in need of in order to sustain life on Earth. (French, 2009) The human have hired a mining crew that is responsible for the extraction of the inobtainium. An army of hired soldiers to ensure the safety and forcibility of the mission has also accompanied the mining crew. (French, 2009) Although the planet has gravity is does not have oxygen, so the Human must wear mask to supply them with air to breath. One of the obstacles that the miners and army must face is the Native tribe of the Na’vi who has inhabited the planet and is determined to protect it from the Humans. The Na’vi is a primitive tribe and do not rely on technology as the Humans do, but yet, the instincts and training they have used for a lifetime to fight. The Na’vi have a sacred place of worship within their jungle know as the “Tree of Souls”. This also to be the area that contains the largest amount of the unobtainium material and the Mining company is determined at an cost to get it, even if it means killing the Na’vi or destroying the forest. A recruit by the name of Jake Sully has been selected to work in the Avatar program as has signed on to regain his legs that were lost in battle while a Marine. As Jake learns more and more about the Na’vi as a people, supplants himself with the tribe and falls in love with the princess, he begins to turn on the humans and is willing to do whatever it takes to see that the humans do not destroy their way of life. The Na’vi are a people that are one with their planet and believe that everything in life is sacred. Their connection with the planet comes full circle as the huge animals that inhabit the forest come to their aid in the battle with the humans. Out manned and out gunned the Na’vi defeat the humans and send them back to their dying planet.
Editing Techniques
Avatar took editing to a new level. New filmmaking techniques were used to create Avatar as well as editing and work flow that made this film so challenging. James Cameron has taken the world of editing to a new level with the detailed work that is seen in Avatar.
“You don’t cut a 3-D movie just like you don’t write a 3-D movie or compose shots in 3-D,” he says. “There are some small accommodations to the stereo that need to be made, but they should always be downstream of the dramatic edit. I don’t think we shifted one cut because of it. More people are going to see Avatar in 2-D anyway, so the edit is the edit; it has to stand on its own.”
James Cameron

“Not only was this movies Cameron envisioned an approach whereby he could capture the performances, then select specific readings and takes from every actor to build a “performance cut” of the story.” Performance cut is a cut (Kunkes, 2010) Cameron would use performance capture to get the rhythm that he wanted in the movie and film as many takes as it took until he got exactly what he wanted. Cameron would take the performance capture that he wanted and the used the virtual cameras to finalize the visual image of each scene. (Kunkes, 2010) Another editing technique that was used is called FPR or Facial Performance Replacement. (Kunkes, 2010) This is a process where the director and editors can recreate a facial performance of an actor with a stunt double and make their face match up with the words or lines they are supposed to say. In the Avatar action sequences this was common because the Na’vi had their own language and a rhythm that needed to be followed. (Kunkes, 2010) James Cameron would film an action or performance sequence and then use a FPR shot to fill the scenes that didn’t match. Pre-loaded sets and backgrounds were brought in order to create the world of Pandora. (Kunkes, 2010) Different camera angles added to the visual stimulation of each scene. The editing processes in the virtual environment of Pandora help create the visual effect sequences. (Kunkes, 2010) WETA Digital in New Zealand and a host of other vendors created the characters. (Kunkes, 2010) This “front-loading” of the editorial process was ultimately the key to Avatar’s highly detailed narrative and filmic structure. (Kunkes, 2010)
“What we’ve done on Avatar is to take the editorial process and make it director-centric,” says Cameron, who shared both the 1998 Oscar for Best Film Editing and the ACE Eddie Award for Best Feature Film Editing with Titanic co-editors Conrad Buff IV, A.C.E., and Richard A. Harris. “When a director can walk onto a barren stage, pick up this virtual camera, suddenly see a world that’s not really there, create a 5,000-foot ‘magic carpet’ crane move, or increase the scale of a scene tenfold, and then edit that same scene right on the set––that is an entirely new way to make a movie.” (Kunkes, 2010)
With a film like Avatar there are a lot of detractors that can interrupt the viewing process. The set design costumes make up, and acting can all detract from the overall viewing experience. The challenge for a director is to put it all together without one taking away from the other. James Cameron has done a good job of keeping the focus on the characters and the message and not letting the sets, costumes and make up get in the way of it. The set design in Avatar is a combination of reality built sets and virtual sets that make the world of Pandora come to life. (Kunkes, 2010) There is much going on each set with the lighting, the costumes and in some scenes it is hard to concentrate on the dialog or direction of the movie due to the background of those sets.

...Performing and Visual Arts ART/100 November 21, 2012 Larry Wayland Performing and Visual Arts There are many forms of art. The exercise of visual arts can be displayed in drawings, sculptures, photos, architecture designs, and anything that can be seen by the eye. Nature in its purist form is highly functional in design and deference. An artist does not have to be famous to create a beautiful piece of art, artiste are mostly misunderstood people who choose to show how they feel through his or her art piece (Fazenda,1997). The Romanian-born sculptor, Constantin Brancusi stated “Don't look for obscure formulas or mystery in my work. It is pure joy that I offer you. Look at my sculptures until you see them. Those closest to God have seen them (Brezianu, 1965).” The artistic castigations of the viewer bring life to the work and are often welcomed by the creator. The open flow of communications for or against is often used to promote the art piece or the artist. The performing arts are a form where the artists use his or her voice or body to share creative expression with the world. Often performing arts are not viewed as art forms because of the lack of a solid tangible product following the performance. Just as an artist paints on a canvas or a sculptor forms an object from a stone or wood, the dancer or singer places his or herself into the performance (Fazenda,1997). Another form of art is theatre, through the use of speeches, gesturing, sound, and music, the...

...Elizabeth Ruiz October 3, 2015 Art/100 If you were to have a work of art created to express your experiences as a student, what would it be? What would it look like? How would it communicate your experience in terms of its composition? Rather than getting right into it I would take the time to study the world around me for more information. This would have helped me cleared my idea of what I really want to express and compose during my experience. If there’s one thing I have learned is to be individual inventiveness, have self-expression, and creativity are qualities I have valued most. We have many great ideas that come up on our own, we don’t have the need to copy!  We dream, work, play, go to school where we can look for our images, not to our neighbor’s paper, or to copy a picture in a book! In the past two-hundred years so much has changed the physical face of our country, our lifestyles, the peoples of America. What has endured is our high regard for individual freedoms, one being freedom of expression. Learning to express yourself with some degree of clarity be it in writing, music, dance, or the plastic art forms is a difficult task requiring: That you have something you want to express, and that you have the skills to express it with. It would probably be a city that represents perceptual skills an awareness of the world around us, and the world of their imagination. I would make sure it described the knowledge of and appreciation of Art/Beauty in the expansion of the...

...Abstract A reflection on religious monuments and their implements in their connection to their faith and use of prayer. This reflection uses Christian, Islamic, and Jewish religions as examples of study in the Medieval era. Welding Sacer and Profanus Religion is sacred, the cradle of the sacer, the faith that we intertwine within our reality, our profanus. It’s within our churches, our cathedrals, our temples, our synagogues, or our mosques that we connect the sacer and the profanus, the home of our prayers. Among the diversity of religions and beliefs there brings a multitude of holy sectors, each with their own composition of devoted art and architecture, their own contrivance to communicate and praise the godly. The construction of these sectors are genuine, their tiles and grooves not just contributing to an aesthetic but pious, they are symbolic of their faith. Synagogue is a word derivative of the Hebrew meaning for a house of gathering, it’s a shelter for gathered prayer and discussion (Soltes, 10, 5:25). Judaism practices the five books of Moses, the Torah, the Jewish Bible (Soltes, 10, 1:35). They pray facing Jerusalem, synagogue structure oriented to this, for they consider it the ultimate connection between profanus and sacer (Soltes, 10, 6:50). In particular synagogues, such as the Synagogue of Capernaum (4th century B.C.) we can see three doorways. These three entrances can refer to previous liturgical divisions, or are in remembrance of the three courtyards of...

...The most influential person in my life has often stated that “taking risks and overcoming obstacles promotes important discoveries in your life and work.” The most important experience in my life sought me out. It happened to me; I didn’t cause it. However, I am so grateful for that experience because it has changed me in a magnificent way. I have discovered many things about myself as well as others that have benefited my maturity. As I sat at the dining room table one Tuesday night awaiting dinner, I felt as though my world was starting to crash down around me. School, work, friends, and just life in general were stressing me out, not to mention thoughts of the future. I was suddenly faced with the most devastating news of my life; or so I thought. My mother has always been my most adamant supporter but as she sat there, telling me that I would have to pay for my college tuition, I couldn’t help but feel nothing less of hatred for her. The lack of my parents’ financial support has motivated me to prove that I can and will achieve my dreams. As a result of this experience, I am currently in school while holding two jobs at the same time which takes a great deal of responsibility and a considerable amount of time. Working two jobs and staying in school is not exactly what I call fun. However, it is worth the trouble knowing that I get a lesson about responsibility out of it. All this hard work has taught me how to be responsible. I can use this example now and put it into use...

Her name is Carla Simmons. She is my 41 year sister from Talladega, Al. According to her, growing up she never had a plan or a blueprint for her life. As a result, she never completed anything she started. Consequently, she accomplished her goals later in life. In 2005 she received her Real Estate license. It was a struggle because she was a single mother of two and worked a full-time job. She worked from 6 A.M-4:30 P.M. She went straight to class after work and didn’t get home until 11 PM. She was tired but she was persistent. In 2014, she received a Bachelor degree in Organizational Management from Historical Talladega College. She is now pursuing an MBA in Organizational Management. She knows when to be serious and when to have fun. She surrounds herself with positive people, makes time for herself, does things she enjoys doing, and she constantly thinks about being successful. She is an optimist at heart and she has a very positive outlook on life. First of all, she taught me how to surround myself with positive people because negative people gripe and complain, and have nothing good to say. And no matter how one tries to convince them, they cannot and will not accept that way of thinking. How I Became Literate

...Opening a book creates a whole new world of exploration of the imagination. Every turn of the sharp crisp pages leads to a new discovery, an intriguing sense of the mind to where you will never be capable of putting a book down for even a second. As a child there are countless memories I can recollect of learning to read and experiencing that same exact feeling. Many people have been influential in the process of my own literary advancement over the years. Only a few of those people stick out very vividly in my mind, Mrs.Kathy, Mrs.Shannon, and my grandfather Odom. Mrs.Kathy was one of the first individuals to introduce me to reading and it all started with bedtime stories. I can remember crawling into the tall hickory wood sleigh bed in the guest room and bundling up with every stitch of blanket underneath the reading lamp. The eagerness that set in my brain could not wait for Mrs.Kathy to turn the first page and dive into a world of imagination. As she sat down on the edge of the bed she would start reading excerpts out of an old story book. While she was reading I would read along in my mind until I could only hear a faint whisper of her voice following silence as I drifted into a light sleep. Afterwards, I would hear the lamp switch make a clicking sound and the door creak as it came to a shut. Laying there in silence for a few minutes I would roll over, turn the lamp on, pick the old story book back up and read page after page until my hearts content. It was in those moments...

Our Relationship with Others Help Us to Define Who We Are

...Context Prompt: Our relationships with others help us to define who we are. Our identity is what we perceive ourselves to be as well as how others view us. One’s identity is therefore an essential element in defining themselves. For that reason, it is especially important that we are comfortable with our identity. As individuals, people have unique characteristics and personalities as well as belonging to groups that influence such factors as their lives go on. Although great emphasis is put on creating ones identity alone, a number of factors such as ones appearance, society, environment, religion and race can shape our identities thus help us to define who we are. It is also believed that our genetic makeup has a large role in determining who we are. Our identity can be considerably shaped by our appearance. Physical appearance is the first, and often most important, and most lasting impression others get of us. Society will create different assumptions about others based on simple factors such as ones fashion and ones physical qualities. As a result, many will adjust their identities to be accepted by society. For example, people tailoring their personal appearance to fit what they want others to see them as. An individual who dresses very formally is likely to want others to view them as high class or wealthy. Although, factors such as height and skin colour cannot be so easily altered and depends on ones genetics. The effects of appearance on our identity can be...

...Measuring Speed Introduction: Speed is defined as the rate of change of position or the rate of motion. A rate is the ratio between two different quantities. Motion is described with respect to, or relative to, another object called a reference point or frame of reference. Usually the Earth is considered to be stationary and is often the frame of reference. Speed is a relative quantity that depends upon the frame of reference -- how an object is observed and measured. Average speed is total distance traveled divided by the total time traveled. average speed = total distance or speed = d where d is distance and t is time total time traveled t Another way to measure speed is called instantaneous speed. This type is one of the most common ways we measure speed. Instantaneous speed is the measurement of speed at a particular instant. Without the use of a measuring device called a speedometer, instantaneous speed is almost impossible to measure. When both speed and direction are specified for the motion the term velocity is used. In other words, velocity is speed in a particular direction. A person walking eastward at 1 km/h does not have the same velocity as a person walking northward at 1 km/h, even though their speeds are the same. Two persons also have different velocities if they walk in the same direction at different speeds or if they are turning. Working most of the day, he never had time to go to school like other kids. Therefore, he went to the library to study whenever he has time. He later was hired by Thomas A.Scott to work as a private secretary and a personal telegrapher. When the Civil War came, he was the right hand man of Scott, who was the supervisor of military transportation for the North back then. Innovation is about timing, but there is not a theory behind it. It includes processes and new ideas and then they are converted into new useful products. It creates value for customers who pay for it. Disruptive Innovation is an all-out risk taker, creating new markets with more practical approaches towards buyer's purchasing power. What we know is that innovation does not have an end, it's the fact that what we want and what we need continues to change. Innovation is not the goal but everything we do to get to that point. I think collaboration within innovation is an revolving trend. This is the concept of an open source. With the internet age, there are so many people connected worldwide, so there is the fact of collaboration. It creates alternatives for companies who which are smaller to have the ability to remain small and agile. If that is the choice, it also allows those less ended businesses to be a part of the larger agenda in innovation. Innovation is a connected function of communities.
