...Select Committee on Art and Manufactures (MET) commented on how British-manufactured goods were lacking in quality. This indeed created the Arts and Crafts movement in 1860, where the movement rejected modernity and industry, mainly towards the output of British Industry. As history reaches the 2nd half of the 19th century, the mission of Arts and Crafts movement did not completely establish but instead it provided more opportunities for new designers and more options on the market for consumers. With great support of the design society one of the many talented designers stood out and influenced the style of that period, it was Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in Glasgow, Scotland, 1868 where the Arts and Crafts movement was happening. The time period where Mackintosh grew up was between the influences of Japan, which significantly influence his style later on. Mackintosh was part of the Scottish School, where a group of artists and designers establish new and strikingly modern style in 1880s. (V&A) They together worked in Glasgow and created decorative schemes for architectures and design. It can be concluded that Mackintosh grew up in an artistic environment and design was his main passion. He has three outstanding designs that were eye opening during the period and beyond, it is the Glasgow School of Art, The Gallery, Willow Tea Rooms and The Hill House. ...Art Nouveau April 10, 2013 Response Paper 1. How does Arts and Crafts influence show in Art Nouveau? Arts and Crafts developed in England in the 1860s. Art Nouveau is a rejection of the European Academic Style. They are both decorative, influenced by medieval, pre-Raphaelite art movement and many other aspects. They can both be understood as reactions to the Industrial Revolution but more so the Arts and Crafts movement. The Arts and Crafts movement stressed the importance of beautiful, handmade crafts and Art nouveau eventually evolved from this, especially in architecture. These new age architects especially Gaudi saw the way architecture was being produced most notably that of the example district in Barcelona and was appalled by it. It was like the architecture of a systematic machine much like that of the industrial revolution and he did not agree with it. He saw architecture not only as a functional thing but also a breathing, living and beautiful thing much like that of the goods produced from the arts and crafts movement. 2. Which are the differences between A&C and Art Nouveau? Art Nouveau originates in France and is characterized by the floral, natural forms, whiplash curves and extravagant fluidity of line. It is mainly based on the principals of nature and the idea that buildings or architecture was more than a means of living but rather an interpretation of the living world. They sought to breathe beauty back into the world and to create a fluid...

...ART NOUVEAU. Art Nouveu as a style arose in the last decade of the 19th century primarily in France and Germany, quickly speading throughout Europe and onto America. It represented a definitive break from past academic traditions rooted in revivalism and classicism. Its fresh organic forms and bold design sensibilities was a long awaited opportunity for artists and designers, stifled by the mores and traditions of the acadamy, to move on. Its influnce on architecture, painting, typography, crafts etc was pervasive but short lived. That being said, it marked the beginning of the modern in style and with its drive to unify arts and craft helped to bring about movements like Bauhaus. The two recognized infuences on the creation of the Art Nouveau style were William Morris's arts and crafts movement, which rejected the ecessive ornamentation of Victorian decorative arts, and the vogue for Japanese prints with thier direct unadorned simplicty an colour schemes. There are many arguments as to what is definitively the first peice of Art Nouveau but it is generally accepted that Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo's book jacket on Wren's churches, with its floral designs, was a seminal manifestation of the style. One prime example of Art Nouveau that express many elements of the style, function and zeitgeist were the Paris metro stations designed by Hector Guimard. The functional elements such as the railings, lamposts and signage were mass produced and...

...from “assimilation” to “self-determination” and social activists like Geoffrey Bardon and Peter Fannin started to promote Aboriginal arts and crafts, the sign meaning of Aboriginal arts gradually transformed. Aboriginal collectives such as Papunya Tula also spread arts and crafts to the mainstream (white) society. Artworks produced in one place were sold in another region and various exhibitions were held in white-dominated places like Melbourne and even outside Australia, in Europe or United States. The aesthetic dimension was increasingly valued. And later, as the associations such as the Aboriginal Arts Board and the Aboriginal Arts and Crafts Pty.ltd became the main buyers of the Aboriginal arts and crafts, the Aboriginal arts and crafts market gradually matured. Aboriginal arts and crafts transformed into high-art commodities that gained popularity among Western art collectors (Myers, 2002). This indexicality, however, was largely constructed by outsiders. The original religious implications of Aboriginal arts and crafts were largely overlooked as Aboriginal arts and crafts were subsumed into the international high art market. Thus the “Aboriginality” sign transformed into a sign of “art” in the eye of...

...He uses this to emphasize that function plays a primary role in distinguishing art from architecture, and what paradox co-exists to consider a building, “architecture”. Nadia agreed with Goldberger and further supported his statements, Bringing into account, the concept of design – to plan and make decisions about (something that is being built or created) in how she denoted as: “focusing on what’s important”. In transparent discussion, design has a purpose. It is entirely composed of a concept drawn from limitations, and considerations to serve the intent, it was designed for; to as opposed to as art can hold purpose, but it is still a free form of self expression. Which bears no argument. She later mentioned: “Comparing the two, (art vs. architecture) would be completely dismissing what we’re doing.” Which invoked a clear connection, to Goldbergers’ discussion. Potentially, that architecture is built to stand, and it’s capability to be artistic is subjective, rather than the design itself being considered an...

...Steine ARTS 105 March 30, 2015 Assignment #9 1. The world is a colorful landscape of different languages, skin colors, and different cultures. It's important to develop an appreciation for different cultures in order to become a well-rounded person who is sensitive to the unique qualities of others. One way to develop this appreciation is to try to learn about other cultures around the world. There are several ways to become knowledgeable about different cultures. One way is to observe a craft from a particular culture. Observing works by producers who have a close relationship with a particular culture allows people to gain an authentic glimpse into the food, music, language, religion, and way of a life of a particular group of people. 2. Craft and art originally shared the same meaning. It was during the Renaissance that painting, sculpture and architecture got labeled into the category of art and from there on the activities of making a chair, a rug, a bowl was separated into this other category called crafts. 1. But this distinction comes from a western tradition. 2. Many other cultures does not make this distinction. Example of Pomo Indians 3. And certainly we still consider ancient Greek vases to be art. There is no definite line that separates the two. Labels are a convenient way for people to talk label art. In fact with the feminist movement in the 70’s, women were bringing crafts back into the world of art blurring...

...with art is in form of an established system that is produced and reproduced by culture industry. Art as a socioeconomic value is subtly described hard to understand and participate and artist is who involve in greatness of arts. Contemporary arts are lacking the Burke’s sublime It is, in my opinion, mostly a medium for so called artist to show and promote his or her own individuality and subjective understanding of reality in a fancy way that has nothing to do with the psyche of aesthetic. Art is becoming much of a personal media of artist instead of representation of seeking beauty in physical or philosophical terms. For example, Pollock promotes a sense of recklessness in a world with massive wars; his personal understanding of world is valuable but not the art works. However, Vitruvian Man of Da Vinci bears its own value independent of the man who made it. Beside, art or being and artists includes a certain amount of privliage; it is true that barriers of participation to art is high but communicating that everybody is great and special and eventually reproducing the idea that real art is beyond human is a structural hypocrisy. Hence, performance arts went down from ballet or theatre to Marina Abramovic who does not perform but processes experience and creates participation to art. Moreover, established system crushes people just the right amount so that some of the artistic people use their capabilities to rebel and nothing more. Regardless of individual effort art as we...

For Rossi, Catherine in The Architectural Review; “ For me, to consider craft is simply to be interested in making; to understand things, be they chairs or cities, as artefacts that demand asking how they have been made by whom and what their making tells us about the societies they have been made for.” To her, The significance of making is that it has culture which defines a society. Yet, over the years the value of craft has significantly plummeted. According to Adamson,Glenn former head of the Museum of Arts and Design, since 2004 has been saying goodbye...

...using the name Crayola LLC, since it was the company’s well-known brand. Crayola is a brand of artists’ supplies that is best known for its crayons. Crayola LLC claims the Crayola brand has a 99% name recognition in the U.S. household, which is why the name Crayola LLC is used in place of Binney & Smith. Crayola began as Binney & Smith in 1885 when Joseph Binney partnered with his son and nephew. Binney & Smith began producing dustless chalk and then later began producing crayons and color pencils. The company has experienced tremendous growth from this timeframe to become the largest art supply company in the world. The company is currently in the maturity phase of the product life cycle and successfully avoids the decline phase by continually introducing innovative products. Since most parents are concerned with the mess that is associated with arts and crafts, Crayola has moved from crayons to toys to address this concern. They reinvented themselves by creating toys that are relatively cheap and are mess-free. The toys also do not require adult supervision. Since Crayola is not a toy maker, this creates a whole new stage of development.
