...Draft Proposal on Impact Assessment of Urban Agriculture Research and Development in Nairobi By William Omoto Department of Research Development Nairobi Kenya 1. INTRODUCTION Background Kenya’s leading development challenges today include alleviation of poverty and environmental management in the context of rapid population growth and urbanization. Kenya’s population was 28.6 million people in 1999 and is expected to reach 43 million in the year 2020. According to the government statistics, the national level of absolute poverty increased from 44% in 1992 to 56% in 2002 (GoK 2002). Nairobi has registered the highest rate of urbanization (4.5%) with a population of 2.2m in 2000 projected to reach 3.2m in the year 2010. About 50% of people in Nairobi live below the absolute poverty line of Ksh. 2 648. As the urbanization trend continues, urban environments are deteriorating. Most of the urban poor are concentrated in the informal settlements where there are no infrastructure and services to address environmental problems and are engaged in urban agriculture. One of the biggest policy challenges today is the inclusion of environmental policy into urban policy. UPA can be an integral part of a set of policies for sustainable urban environmental management. Urban AF can play an especially vital role in waste management by transforming waste into food and fuel. Waste management approaches in place include waste collecting, sorting, treatment and recycling...

...Few studies have estimated gasoline demand in Canada. Most of these studies have either failed to recognise ali the ways in which consumers can react to gasoline priče changes ог have implemented рге-1973 data which did not provide good estimates of priče elasticities (Dewees et al, 1975; Dahl ,1978; Shalaby and Waghmare, 1980). Some models attempt to estimate the components of gasoline demand using aggre-gated data (Gallini 1983; Dahl 1982). The problem with these models is that they do not identify the relationship between the household decisions on vehicle holdings and on usage. These two decisions are likely to be dependent; the use of a vehicle depends on its type and the type of vehicle chosen depends on its expected use. Since these decisions are made within the household, household data should be used for estimating the various components of gasoline demand. This paper provides an estimate of household gasoline demand in Canada by applying a detailed model to pooled time-series (1969-1988) and cross-sectional provincial data. The model recognises three major behavioural changes that households can make in response to gasoline priče changes: drive fewer miles, purchase fewer cars, and buy more fuel-efficient vehicles. In the model, fuel есопоту is treated in considerable detail. The two components of the fuel есопоту of new cars sold—the technical fuel efficiency of various classes of cars and the distribution of new car sales according to their interior volume...

This is to avoid Shell companies buying or being perceived to be buying favors. In the United States, Shell Oil Company administers a political action committee (Shell Oil Company Employees’ Political Awareness Committee). It is a voluntary, employee-run and employee funded organization, that contributes money to political parties or individual candidates for political office, or organizations that support them. While Shell Oil Company provides administrative support to the Committee, it does not fund the Committee’s donations nor does it make any political contributions itself. We are calling for change, sharing our expertise and co-operating with governments, companies and other partners. Our Business Principles encourage us to contribute to debates on policy issues that affect our business, our employees or the local communities where we operate. Our advocacy Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face. We will continue to work with governments to help them set the policy frameworks to create market-based incentives – such as an effective cap-and-trade market for CO2 – that will contribute towards improving energy efficiency and support lower-carbon energy, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. ASD Model

...ASD is a behaviorally defined disorder with a biological basis. The behavioral definition and the identification of a set of genetic or neurobiological markers for ASD represent descriptive models of the disorder. Morton and Firth (1995) have argued that in order to develop a caused model of ASD a third level of explanation, the cognitive or psychological level, is necessary to bridge the gap between the biological and behavioral levels. In order to understand the mechanisms by which genes and neurobiology influence behavior, it is necessary to understand the cognitive processes that mediate that behavior, there is arguably no direct link between biology and behavior in ASD. Cognitive accounts are essential to understand ASD (Brookman-frazee,...

...Quality Management Systems Introduction An organisation will benefit from establishing an effective quality management system (QMS). The cornerstone of a quality organisation is the concept of the customer and supplier working together for their mutual benefit. For this to become effective, the customer-supplier interfaces must extend into, and outside of, the organisation, beyond the immediate customers and suppliers. A QMS can be defined as: “A set of co-ordinated activities to direct and control an organisation in order to continually improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its performance.” These activities interact and are affected by being in the system, so the isolation and study of each one in detail will not necessarily lead to an understanding of the system as a whole. The main thrust of a QMS is in defining the processes, which will result in the production of quality products and services, rather than in detecting defective products or services after they have been produced. The benefits of a QMS A fully documented QMS will ensure that two important requirements are met: • The customers’ requirements – confidence in the ability of the organisation to deliver the desired product and service consistently meeting their needs and expectations. • The organisation’s requirements – both internally and externally, and at an optimum cost with efficient use of the available resources – materials, human, technology and information. These requirements can only be truly met...
