...Assignment 2: Why We Buy There were many things that captured my attention in the assigned chapters. One of the first was how many stores were calculating their conversion rate (the percentage of people who entered the store and actually bought something) by simply counting the number of people that came in, and how many people bought something. Not only did they have inaccurate information, but they also didn’t know how to draw conclusions from their data. Their information was inaccurate because they were not taking into consideration how many people came in groups. The example used was a family of four walking into an electronics store and buying one flat screen TV. It is extremely unlikely that all four of them were going to buy a flat screen TV, they were simply going with one person to buy one item. One of the main topics covered in this chapter is time that a customer spends shopping. It has been proven time and time again that the more time a shopper spends in the store, generally the more they buy. The placement of the products and the layout of the store greatly influences how much time a customer will spend in the store. This is not always true however. If the placement of an item is so bad that the customer cannot find it, they will become aggravated and leave. Even though the customer spent a lot of time in the store, since the layout of the store was so terrible, they gave up and left without buying anything. The best example from the reading was of the superstore...

...LTE/WiMax PATENT LICENSING STATEMENT (December 2008) Throughout its existence, Qualcomm has led the wireless industry in the research and development (R&D) required to move from analog technology into second and third generation digital wireless technologies and beyond. These advances have been largely based upon Qualcomm's patented enabling inventions making it possible to apply code division multiple access (CDMA) technology to commercial cellular wireless networks. More recently, Qualcomm has been a leading developer of the technology enabling high speed data extensions of 3G networks and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based 4G systems and standards. As a result, Qualcomm owns an extremely valuable patent portfolio that includes patents that are essential, and others that are commercially useful, to all commercial wireless standards based upon CDMA and OFDMA-based systems and standards currently under development. Qualcomm has had a long standing policy of broadly offering to license its standards essential patents for CDMA-based telecommunications standards on terms and conditions that are fair, reasonable, and free from unfair discrimination (FRAND), subject to reciprocity. FRAND is a well-established principle that appropriately balances the interests of patent holders to obtain a fair return on their innovations and those of implementers to obtain access to such innovations through good faith bilateral negotiations of licensing terms and conditions...

...FILMORE FURNITURE LTD Filmore Furniture Ltd. manufactures colonial maple furniture. The company was incorporated in 1970 by Fred Filmore, who had been the sole proprietor prior to that. In 1983, Fred Filmore retired and sold his business to his only son Phil, age 38, for a small sum. That year, annual sales totalled $1,300,000. Phil Filmore was an aggressive manager and strategist. He modernized the plant, introduced new product designs and accessories such as mirrors and lamps, and implemented new marketing strategies and merchandising ideas. These innovations were quite successful, and helped the company to establish a good reputation in the furniture industry. From 1983 to 1993, sales income increased to $5,100,000, and the company had 58 full-time employees on the payroll. While sales grew quite strongly, the highly competitive nature of the furniture business held profits to relatively low levels. In 1998, the company's after-tax profit amounted to $204,000, or 4.0 percent of sales income, which was very close to the industry average. Phil Filmore was clearly in charge of the key activities of the business, including all of the strategic decisions mentioned earlier. The company employed five sales representatives who called upon the smaller accounts, but Phil personally handled the responsibility of calling on the major accounts. Of particular importance were the company's relationships with major chain stores that Phil had developed in the years after he took...

...Ishan Bharadwaj Article 1 Rupee slumps to an all time low of 56.67 against US Dollar Indian rupee suffered its worst devaluation this week. The Indian rupee has depreciated by in excess of 20 per cent to close to 55-a-dollar mark currently from its near 44-level against the US currency at the end of May 2012 due to sustained dollar demand from banks and importers in view of the firm dollar sentiment fueled by Euro zone crisis. The weakening of Indian rupee against other foreign currencies, especially dollar, is not good news for the Indian government and also importers. A depreciating rupee may compound the macroeconomic problems as prices of imported goods will surge and worsen the current account deficit. India won't be able to take advantage even if commodity prices ease due to global slowdown. The value of various currencies moves relative to the sense of balance of trade between countries and the intensity of sovereign risk. India may be bare to a number of influences such as accessibility of raw materials, fuel and food and the level of international borrowing as well as withdrawing markets for their exports. The ongoing rupee weakness is basically due to the European crisis coupled with crisis in domestic economy. Due to the up trending crisis in Europe, large banks, investors and financial institutions started selling euro and bought dollar, thus dollar appreciated against all major currencies including rupee. Domestic economy adds fuel to this crisis due...

...SYPHILIS DEFINITION Syphilis is a highly contagious disease spread primarily by sexual activity, including oral and anal sex. Occasionally, the disease can be passed to another person through prolonged kissing or close bodily contact. Although this disease is spread from sores, the vast majority of those sores go unrecognized. The infected person is often unaware of the disease and unknowingly passes it on to his or her sexual partner. It is caused by a spirochete and is acquired through sexual contact. It may also be congenital in nature. ETIOLOGIC AGENT The infection is caused by a spirochete, Treponema pallidum. * T. pallidum has no other host but man. * From a fresh smear taken from a lesion, T. pallidum appears as a shiny, twirling thread twisting its way in a wave-like corkscrew motion through the debris in the smear. * it is believed that the spirochete can pass through the mucosa even through a crack on its surface may not be visible at the site of entry. 4. The organism is also able to pass through the plancenta and infect the developing fetus within the body of a syphilitic mother. 5. The spirochete does not withstand drying, but withstand considerable temperature variation. 6. Based on studies, the organism has been found alive in a drinking glass a half-hour after the glass has been rinsed with cold water. SOURCES OF INFECTION * Discharges from ovious or concealed lesions of the skin or mucous membranes. * The semen, blood...

...The Purdue OWL: Citation Chart Category General Approach MLA The Modern Language Association (MLA) provides a method for source documentation that is used in most humanities courses. The humanities place emphasis on authorship, so most MLA citation involves recording the author’s name in the physical text. The author’s name is also the first to appear in the “Works Cited” page at the end of an essay. The most recent MLA formatting can be found in the seventh edition of the MLA manual. APA The American Psychological Association (APA) provides a method for source documentation that is used in most social sciences courses. The social sciences place emphasis on the date a work was created, so most APA citation involves recording the date of a particular work in the physical text. The date is usually placed immediately after the author’s name in the “References” page at the end...

...Analysis of Competition in the Mobile Phone Markets of the United States and Europe International Business Master's thesis Mika Husso 2011 Department of Management and International Business Aalto University School of Economics AALTO UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS Department of Management and International business Master’s thesis ABSTRACT ANALYSIS OF COMPETITION IN THE MOBILE PHONE MARKETS OF THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE Competition in an economic context is a widely studied phenomenon with a significant body of accumulated research and theory. However, competition in the mobile phone industry, despite its prevalence in public discussion, has received significantly less attention in academic research. Within the international business (IB) context there are very few academic studies that seek to analyze and compare the different geographical mobile phone markets from the viewpoint of competition. This thesis examines competition in the mobile phone markets of the United States and Europe in light of interviews and secondary data covering years 2002 - 2011. The framework used for the analysis is founded on concepts drawn primarily from industrial organization (IO) economics, IB theory and microeconomics. The first part of the thesis gives an overview of the U.S. and European mobile phone markets and the second part focuses specifically on Nokia, its actions and performance on the U.S. market. The findings reveal that the U.S. and European mobile phone markets are fundamentally...
