...it difficult to see, a busy radio that is distracting, and other pilots and vehicles operating at the same time. With all of these factors, for example, it is simple to see how runway incursions occur. Runway incursions are a product of human error. It is important to understand the roles that are played conducting airport operations. The controllers issue clearances, instructions, and advisories to pilots and ground vehicle operators. Controllers guide all traffic on ramps, taxiways, and runways. They are also responsible of knowing where all of their assigned traffic is at all times. This can be achieved by looking out of the control tower windows, or with modern technology such as Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) which provides precise surface detection using a combination of radar, transponder, and ADS-B technology...

...CUSTOMER CASE STUDY SURFACE OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT SURFACE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FedEx is the world’s largest airline in terms of aircraft and freight tons flown, delivering time-sensitive packages and cargo to more than 375 destinations in over 220 countries each day. Located at Memphis International Airport (MEM) in Tennessee, FedEx ’s global hub is the nerve center of one of the most complex, fast-cycle logistics operations today. THE CHALLENGE Every week, more than a thousand flights deliver cargo to FedEx’s automated, stateof-the art, package-sorting system at MEM. FedEx has two main arrival/departure banks, one during the day and one at night. Each weekday, approximately 100 FedEx flights arrive between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., departing again between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. after all packages have been sorted. The fast-cycle logistics push is even more compressed at night, when more than 150 flights arrive between 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m., departing again between 2:30 a.m. and 4:15 a.m. A delayed FedEx arrival into MEM may cause packages from that flight to miss the sorting process and thus miss its scheduled departure. Further, a delayed departure disrupts operations at the destination, resulting in additional couriers, employee overtime and other related costs. The cost of delays to a FedEx flight is significant, as it includes package delay fees that are much higher than fuel and crew costs alone. With no direct insight into Memphis operations, FedEx ’s Global Operations Control...

...Runway Incursion Prevention Lorenzo Stewart Academy College Runway Incursion Prevention Ground controllers use a team communication effort to ensure that support vehicles and aircraft that are taxiing remain clear of active runways. There are many types of safety systems that are in place to help prevent runway incursions, for instance runway lighting or signage that identifies a runway or a hold short point. I will cover just a few of these basic communication systems and how they have progressed from their first implementation to their modern day counterparts. Communication is currently believed to be the weakest link in aviation systems, so let’s identify aviation safety’s strong areas. Lighting is simple and resilient system and perfect way to make a purposed area stand out from another area while identifying the boundaries of both. This system is proven in day and night condition as well as poor weather and low visibility situations. There are several types of lighting used on an airport, the first type is runway edge lighting these lights are the industry standard located on either side of the runway and are elevated by a short metal pole to help clear the grass or snow the lights are spaced at intervals of 200 feet and out line the full length of the runway. These lights are white in color and use a special lens called a Frensel lens this unique lens is designed to concentrate the light...

It further highlights the need and importance of air traffic controlling. Air Traffic Controllers are vital for the smooth flow of traffic in air and on ground, in other words; they help aircraft perform safe operations. Hence it has become essential to keep them healthy, motivated and stress free when on job. This paper also provides the findings of interviews that were conducted in order to gain insight on what job performance [related] problems or psychological issues are dealt with Air Traffic Controllers in Dubai. It was established that traffic congestion due to high volumes of traffic and shift work raised more alarm than other challenging factors which are also stated...

...FINANCE AND FINANCIAL MARKETS 3,6 Types of financial intermediaries Financial institutions are like most other businesses in that they exist to make a profit and this is maximized by minimizing their costs and maximizing their revenue. Like most firms they can only survive if they design and sell products and services that can meet demand at a reasonable profit level. We now proceed to look at some of the key types of financial institutions that are involved in the process of financial intermediation; that is, the transfer of funds between surplus and deficit agents. We distinguish between deposit-accepting institutions, such as banks and savings institutions, and other types of financial intermediaries, such as insurance companies, mutual funds/unit trusts, pension funds, hedge funds and private equity and the like. 3.7 deposit institution an institution such as a bank or savings institution that accepts cash deposits Deposit institutions Deposit institutions accept deposits from economic agents. These funds become their liabilities which they then on-lend to make direct loans or investments, which become their assets. Deposit-taking institutions aim to make a profit in the way of 'spread income' between the cost of the deposits that they accept and other sources of funding, and the return that they receive on their investment portfolio in the way of loans, equity stakes and other investments. Examples of deposit institutions include commercial banks,...
