...Asheville is an eclectic city known for its food fare, arts and outdoors recreation. Yet as the population continues to flourish, several issues are becoming problematic for this small mountain oasis. As Asheville continues to expand, so does the demand for food, housing and employment. In a news article by Julia Richary that was written in the Mountain Xpress, a local newspaper in Asheville, it stated that leisure and hospitality in Asheville’s metro area is the fastest growing industry in the state, growing at a 5.7% rate in the last year (Richary, 2012). Although this seems beneficial to Asheville’s economy, the growth is problematic because it is unbalanced by low wages. The lack of competitive pay poses strain on citizens who face an increase in the cost of living. Cost of living increases make it harder for citizens to afford the cost of rent, mortgage, utilities and other basic needs. Without a means to afford all the essentials in life, many Asheville citizens find it too difficult to get by and may end up homeless. In another interview in the Mountain Xpress published this past August, Heather Dilashaw, the program director for the Homeless Initiative Coalition in Asheville stated, “It does seem to be tied to continued depressed economic opportunity, with rents in the Asheville area [continuing] to be above fair-market value [and] difficult to attain. “Ten years ago, a younger adult who didn't have other family support or resources could get a job, even if it was...

...Canton is a small town located right outside of Asheville in Haywood County. As a student at Western Carolina University, a project was conducted to interview three people, and find out as much information on this miraculous town as possible. Canton is home to Evergreen paper mill, which has been within the town forever. It used to be called Champion, but in recent years was changed to Evergreen. This small town friendly was built around one of the oldest mills which began operating in 1908, and is still in operation today. ... Stepping into an art gallery during Asheville’s gallery stroll you are overwhelmed by the smell of art mediums. Beginning at Phil Mechanic studios located in the art district I made my way through the exhibits. I spoke with artist, discovered common grounds, and asked questions about works I connected to. With an open mind I descended the stairs to the lowest level and there was shift in the air. I entered into the section belonging to an artist by the name of Kris Lars. I immediately fall in love with several pieces. As I looked I felt drawn to a particular piece across the room. The walk over was the beginning of experiencing the work. As you approached different details show. The piece to be looked in totality must be seen from many angles. The left half of the painting portrays a very different message than the right. The left is noticeable because of the large woman character that dominates the piece. She is done in what appears to be pen and charcoal, her form filled in contrasting strongly against the faded white around her. Her strong facial features strike an observer almost instantly. She has a curved nose accompanied by a glaring eye and sharp eyebrow. Her gaze is unwavering and bird like with beady eyes. She challenges the observer as they approach. Beside her is a faceless from also done in charcoal. Her hands are rested on her leg in a position to look like they are bound and in her hand appears to be a writing utensil. One leg is drawn at angle that creates...

...Images such as an ambulance careening down the highway, lights flashing and sirens wailing, or a city block filled with riots and turmoil, are what comes to mind when one thinks of the word crisis. In the minds of many, crisis is synonymous with chaos. The Asheville housing crisis, however, is a crisis of a different nature. It is a silent crisis, one that is the affecting the lives of countless households throughout Asheville. Despite these widespread effects many citizens are turning a blind eye to this crisis, as it is not loud or chaotic one. The housing crisis in Asheville exists as a constant state of a shortage of affordable housing. Affordable in this statement is the key word, as many houses are being developed regularly that sell...

...Malcolm Forbes elucidates, “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.” Thankfully, UNC Asheville’s liberal arts curriculum grants me the magnificent opportunity to develop an open and realistic mind by pursuing an undergraduate degree based not only on my intended field of study, but also on my overall intellectual ability. During my journey at UNCA, I hope to be challenged by my educators to think “outside of the box” and utilize my education to consider new perspectives on issues of local, national, and global status. I hope that as a result of this curriculum, I will be able to apply my degree in biology and Spanish to real world situations, like medical school, that I may otherwise be unequipped to handle. Also,...

...UNC Asheville is down by four with forty seconds left in the big south championship; Kyle Jenkins, little brother of Kris Jenkins, steals it from Winthrop and the coach calls time out. “Don’t panic, there is plenty of time left and we have the ball” said Coach Carter. “Yeah boys, I got this, put it in my hands and we’ll take home that hardware” said Kyle. Kyle takes the in bounds pass and makes his way through the soft press and then moves it up to a dead sprint to the hoop. Kyle goes up to dunk it and gets fouled hard. Two shots… Kyle nails the first, and sinks the second. Two point game, twenty-six seconds left. Winthrop’s Josh Giles breaks the press with incredible skill, but the goes to the basket too out of control and looses it out of...

...Autumn Mullins Mr. McGinnis English Composition 111 11/27/13 A White Thanksgiving Snow is beautiful, fun and an enjoyable sight during the holidays but it could cause a huge deal of stress, problems, and even danger. This year, the day beforeThanksgiving, North Carolina Mountains experienced an early winter storm. Children in several counties had a frigid, fun day in the snow, throwing snowballs, building snowmen and making delicious snow cream for a cold treat. However, the storm affected more than just Buncombe County, it covered most of the East Coast with a beautiful blanket of white. Though the sights of it were praised, problems began to arise and the snow showed that it was a sweet deceit of enjoyment and frustration. During Thanksgiving, many flights are taking place around the country. The snow storm arrived with clouds full of precipitation causing flight delays and cancelations. Some flights had people arriving at their destination, however the anger was evident because they were late but there were a few unlucky ones that don't get to go home to spend Turkey Day with loved ones since the storm is too dangerous to fly. Alterations and different plans had to be made so that Thanksgiving could be celebrated but not at the place it was desired to be. The storm also caused ice, and damage on the roads that had people stuck waiting for the highways to clear up. Trees blocked drivers, and ice caused accidents. Some were unharmed but others have to spend thanksgiving...

...made up the Asheville community. The group that attended seemed to me that these people just weren’t ordinary people but people with developed interest in the history of Asheville and what took place in the African American community. By 2:10pm the room seemed full to the point where people were sitting and standing on the outer parts of the room. It took Dr. Waters roughly forty-five minutes to share his research but was fairly condensed it seemed, due to his nervous and fast pace of his presentation. After listening to Dr. Waters lecture on the up come of African Americans in Asheville, it really helped open my eyes on how important the YMI building represents the African Americans community as a whole. During this time (1892-1906) African Americans were viewed by the white society to be “unfit” in the community and incapable to succeed. In order to keep the African Americans in place (ignorant) they were often presented with violence such as lynching’s during this time. Dr. Waters covered material that caught my attention and that was new to me. In North Carolina there were forty-three documented lynchings and in our hometown (Asheville or nearby) there were four. The first lynching in Asheville occurred in 1891, the second and third in 1893 and the fourth in 1906; African Americans were not the only ones that were targeted by lynch mobs but the whites as well that were trying to uplift the “negro” through educational efforts. African Americans in Asheville were looking...

He fell in love with North Carolina and decided he would buy lots of eroded land in the western part of the state to “nurse” it back to health and productivity. Over a decade, Vanderbilt bought more than 100,000 acres of land. He built a French Renaissance 250-room caster, which is considered to be premier home. It took six years to build. The home covers four acres of floor space, including 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. In 1898, Vanderbilt married Edith Stuyvesant...

...Case New Belgium Brewing (B) New Belgium Brewing: Developing a Brand Personality * Background NEW BELGIUM’S INITIAL MARKETING STRATEGY The idea for the New Belgium Brewing Company began with a bicycling trip through Belgium. Belgium is arguably the home of some of the world’s finest ales, some of which have been brewed for centuries in that country’s monasteries. As Jeff Lebesch, an American electrical engineer, cruised around that country on his fat-tired mountain bike, he wondered if he could produce such high-quality beers back home in Colorado. After acquiring the special strain of yeast used to brew Belgian-style ales, Lebesch returned home and began to experiment in his Colorado basement. When his beers earned thumbs up from friends, Lebesch decided to market them. The New Belgium Brewing Company opened for business in 1991 as a tiny basement operation in Lebesch home in Fort Collins. Lebesch wife, Kim Jordan, became the firm’s marketing director. New Belgium beers quickly developed a small but devoted customer base, first in Fort Collins and then throughout Colorado. The brewery soon outgrew the couple’s basement and moved into an old railroad depot before settling into its present custom-built facility in 1995. The company’s standard line has grown to include Sunshine Wheat, Blue Paddle Pilsner, Abbey Ale, Trippel Ale, 1554 Black Ale, and the original Fat Tire Amber Ale, still the firm’s bestseller. Today, New Belgium Brewing is America’s third largest...

...Sinkler stops early into his journey with Lucy to drink from a spring seep, which is so shallow that he has to lean over and support himself with his hand. Near the journey’s end, he stops again to drink from a spring seep, sees the print of his own hand in the sand, and realizes that Lucy has led him in a circle rather than over the ridge to Asheville. This handprint becomes the catalyst for Sinkler’s epiphany that his trust in Lucy was misplaced. Sinkler is the agent of his own destruction, and has been done in “by his own hand,” by the choice he has made to trust Lucy. This is made clear in Sinkler’s final act. He knows that Clem and Lucy will kill him. He is too tired to run and knows that he can’t escape his fate. His final act is to remove Clem’s shirt, because Clem and Lucy are poor and he knows that they will want the shirt...
