If you are ever down in the dumps or you feel like you are just not getting enough out of life one way to fight that is by giving back to others. Nothing will reset you better than knowing that you have helped someone out. I have always done youth or adult mission trips with my church or participated in community service trips with NJROTC since I can remember, so it’s really hard to just pick one. But this one trip really was different than the others. AYM (Ashville Youth Mission) is a missionary group that offers broad based experiences where each group serves in several different ways in the Asheville area. Our first destination was Church of the Advocate which holds a bible study for the homeless every Monday. My youth group put together a freeze frame play of the story John the Baptist. This bible study was the first taste of different I would get this week. Never had I sat down and had a chitchat and breakfast with homeless people before. In the past I have given food and helped out but I had never taken the time to just sit and discuss the bible with these people. The next day we got to go to the Veterans Restoration which is an old hotel that has been transformed into a place for Veterans to stay or live for up to two years so they can get back up on their feet. The hotel can hold up to a little over 200 men and during code purple (in Ashville, Code Purple is when the conditions get so cold outside that the city goes on alert to bring as many of the homeless into any of the shelters in Ashville) they said they have had people in all of their rooms and piled into their recreation room.
