In many ways they were the reasons that Rome was so successful in expanding throughout much of the ancient world (Assante). Roman aqueducts did not carry water to far away lands to aid in expansion, but rather provided a way for their population centers to grow in size beyond what would have been possible otherwise. These larger populations gave Rome the manpower, money, and desire to expand and trade beyond its borders. The aqueducts themselves were great feats of ancient engineering. In order to be constructed, the Romans had to have a significant understanding of pressure, fluid flow, stonework, and concrete. Their construction also showed the Romans’ outstanding ability to plan ahead and organize large-scale projects that required tedious attention to detail over spans of many miles. It was Rome’s vast knowledge and resources that enabled them to build such large projects to such a degree of accuracy. Rome was willing to use so many resources towards their aqueducts because they understood how essential they were to their continued existence. At the height of its power, Rome boasted almost 200 different population centers that were supplied with water by the aqueducts (Assante).
