It has the ability to shape the way we behave and control how we feel over certain situations which includes feeling guilty. Understanding what conscience is and how it is developed is an important thing as it could shape the way we behave and effectively change how society is. Aquinas linked the conscience to God, it isn’t God telling us what to do but it is a faculty of God given reason. Aquinas described the conscience as “the mind of man making moral judgement”. Aquinas saw the conscience as the natural ability of a rational human being to understand the difference between right and wrong, and to apply the most basic moral principles to particular situations. Aquinas believed that the conscience contains two essential parts: Synderesis and Conscienta. Synderesis refers to the rational principles on which moral decisions are based; it is ‘right reason’ which stems from our natural tendency to do good and shy away from evil. The other essential part of the conscience is conscienta which refers to the moral judgement that a person makes based on those principles. A number of people, the most prominent being the German neurologist Sigmund Freud, believe that the shaping and subsequent implementation of the human conscience is brought about as a direct result of environmental factors, in other words, that conscience is formed through conditioning of the mind. On the other hand, the opposing view held with regards to conscience is that it is innate part of us, borne into existence from the moment we are born. This stance is most often upheld by Christianity, moreover, that God is responsible for placing within us our conscience and as such, it must be obeyed at all times given the gravitas of its supposed link to religion. A key aspect of conscience, irrespective of whether it is innate or environmental is whether or not it must always be obeyed. It can be argued that some individuals may possess a skewed sense of morality, thus preventing them from doing what the consensus may perceive to be an ethical, positive action. He was born as the eldest child to his father’s second wife. When Freud was four years old, his family shifted and settled in Vienna. Although Freud’s ambition from childhood was a career in law, he decided to enter the field of medicine. In 1873, at the age of seventeen, Freud enrolled in the university as a medical student. During his days in the university, he did his research on the Central Nervous System under the guidance of German physician `Ernst Wilhelm Von Brucke’. Freud received his medical degree in 1881and later in 1883 he began to work in Vienna General Hospital. Freud spent three years working in various departments of the hospital and in 1885 he left his post at the hospital to join the University of Vienna as a lecturer in Neuropathology. Following his appointment as a lecturer, he got the opportunity to work under French neurologist Jean Charcot at Salpetriere, the famous Paris hospital for nervous diseases. So far Freud’s work had been entirely concentrated on physical sciences but Charcot’s work, at that time, concentrated more on hysteria and hypnotism. When the obligation is based on moral and ethical considerations, it is a moral duty. Often we think about moral duties in terms of rules that restrain us, the “don’ts,” as in don’t lie, cheat, or steal. Such rules comprise the so-called negative dimension of moral duty because they tell us what not to do. Since ethics is concerned with the way we ought to be, however, it also includes an affirmative dimension consisting of things we should do — keep promises, judge others fairly, treat people with respect, kindness and compassion. Sources of Moral Obligation Moral obligations can arise from three sources. The first, strangely enough, is law. 1. Law-Based Moral Obligations. Good citizens have a moral as well as a legal obligation to abide by laws; it is part of the assumed social contract of a civilized society. If a law is unjust, however, (such as those that mandated ethnic and religious persecution during the Nazi regime and those that discriminated against a person on the basis of race in South Africa and elsewhere) there may be a moral obligation to disobey it under the specific and demanding doctrine of civil disobedience.
