...The topic I have chosen for this assessment is whether or not following a Paleolithic diet is really good for us. The basis of the Paleolithic diet is that if our prehistoric hunter-gather ancestors didn’t eat it, that we shouldn’t either. The sources I have chosen to use include informational articles found at thepaleodiet.com (http://thepaleodiet.com/about-the-paleo-diet/), a Uwire text/article - (http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?id=GALE%7CA364130430&v=2.1&u=swinburne1&it=r&p=AONE&sw=w&asid=c4d0f209e911ce4748ef9cf3946b329d), a YouTube video and its comments (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfLDioJzmIE), and a forum on Bodybuilding.com as another social source (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/what-is-the-paleo-diet.html?page=1). Thepaleodiet.com helped me learn more about learn about the health benefits of Paleo. I chose this source after a google search returned it as a result, and I was drawn to it as it appeared to be quite informational from its short description. This informational source is an example of constructivism through presenting information for the reader. At first glance this site came across as a potentially unreliable source – there was a presence of advertising. But further exploration started proving that this site was in fact reliable. According to Metzger (2007), credible online sources are ones in which we can identify the author and their credentials. In this case, the author is Ph.D. and professor of Health and Exercise Science...

...Evaluating Website Credibility Evaluating the credibility of a website is extremely important, especially when it can impact a person’s health. I have chosen a dot gov domain, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) mission is “to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the US” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). The search engine utilized to find the CDC website was Google.com. The domain where the CDC is located is cdc.gov and the URL is http://www.cdc.gov. When selecting a website, I wanted a site that was relevant to my specialty and well known for informing the community on current health issues. Analysis of the Website Analysis of the CDC website shows they utilize many experts in a variety of fields from Medical doctors to masters and doctoral degree researchers. Experts’ credentials are clearly listed at the end of articles and the CDC stands behind the information placed on the website. Since the CDC is a government agency they are legally held accountable for the quality of information that they disburse including videos, webpages, brochures, and research papers. The organization uses peer review for all articles published and has a policy for correcting any inaccurate written or online information. Also they can be contacted multiple ways including a physical address, phone number, and email address. Information on the CDC website is frequently updated and all webpages and articles have...

...27 September 2012 The Internet has evolved from a business use-protocol to a necessity at home and an invaluable tool to college students worldwide. Since the boom of the Information Superhighway, otherwise known as the Internet, anonymous credibility has been given to anyone with access to the Internet. Before the Internet became what it is today, college professors required the use of the library for research and encyclopedias for accredited facts from known contributors to today’s society. It is said that, “Once upon a time, Encyclopedia Britannica recruited Einstein, Freud, Curie, Mencken and even Houdini as contributors. The names helped the encyclopedia bolster its credibility.”(Stross 331) The new millennium of college students has since abandoned the gothic ruins of brick and mortar for modern technology. Hence, as an evolving community of college students, we must consider the use of websites such as Wikipedia for credible sources or not use them at all. The Internet contains a history of creditable sources. It also contains a legacy of anonymous sources. We have relied on the reviews and opinions of others to prove the validity of said information on the Internet and stop challenging it when we read the answer that strikes a chord in our cognitive judgments. If this process continues to be the norm, printed sources such as encyclopedias will leave people saying “This was written by one person? Then looked at by only two or three other people? How can I trust that...

...Diageo – Marketing to Remember Introduction The case is about Diageo, a drinks company and a leader in corporate social responsibility issues. The company is running a CSR program from within the marketing function. In 2007 they launched the ‘Choices campaign’, aiming at 18-to-24 age group. The campaign ended with the sentence: ‘A night to remember? Or one to forget? The choice is your’. With this they showed that responsibility is at the heart of all their marketing, with the aim to change the attitude towards alcohol. Ethical strengths - Raising awareness - Closeness to consumer provides something that public health agencies lack - Product safety - They have in-depth knowledge of consumers, the ability to get under their skin and understand what makes them behave in the way they do. - Organization succeeds by outperforming their competitors in providing superior value to their customers, in order to create a positive change in people’s attitudes to alcohol. - They do not mislead their customers - They try to ensure that consumers properly understand the risks involved in consuming their product - Brand names are not dominantly present in the advertisement, focus is on responsibility message Ethical weaknesses - Fitness for purpose - Creation of artificial wants - Reinforcing stereotypes - Targeting vulnerable consumers Issues in Product Policy i) To what lengths should the producers of goods and services...

...In the video, “Brilliant Public Speaking” the experts discuss how to effectively communicate with the respective audience. The topics of the week coincide with the video because how information is transferred in the common factor. The experts provide solid advice on how to deliver an exceptional speech all while keeping the audience entertained. Building confidence to deliver a speech is one of the practices that I need to work on when it comes to public speaking. I have become better at it, since enrolling at University of Phoenix however, at times my nerves still get the best of me. I have always been the type of person that prefers to be behind the scenes when it comes to completing tasks. I do not have to be in the forefront or limelight to feel appreciated. Some of the practices the experts gave seemed to be common knowledge, such as the dress code, eating properly, and getting plenty of rest in the days leading up to the speech. I would share the information I learned that was provided in the video. There were so many valuable tips to pass along. I would first advise the perspective speaker to understand the audience that the information is to be given. I would discuss things such as choosing the appropriate subject matter, how to overcome nervousness and make it work to your benefit, conferring with the sponsors regarding the proper dress code, and how to practice the speech in the mirror prior to delivery. In conclusion, it is imperative to prepare for a presentation...

...BA 3300 – BUSINESS CORNERSTONE Assessing Sweatshirts from Sweatshop 1. “According to the recent report by the WorldWeave Foundation, a nonprofit organization funded by American garment workers’ unions, Transterra owns five factories in Third World countries……” Author violates one of the Universal Intellectual standards, clarity. He states that the WorldWeave Foundation recently reported some details about Transterra Textile’s operations. Not every reader knows about that organization and the author did not provide more resources to add credibility for its report. To fix that error author have to provide more information about the organization and add two or three credible sources, so reader could learn more. 2. “All the factory employees, no matter how young, work ten-hour shifts at physically exhausting and mentally deadening jobs, and they are often forced to work overtime”. The author violates another intellectual standard, breadth. Author takes only one point of view. He does not consider that maybe workers that work for that company are happy to work there, and the working conditions that we think are horrible, are normal for them. To fix an error author would have to leave this statement out. 3. “WorldWeave observers noticed some children who appeared to be as young as eleven or twelve working with dangerous fabric-cutting machines…” Author violates another intellectual standard, Accuracy. ...benign the fact that the material was stolen. Bloggers must become educated about copyright infringement and fair use. When unsure whether they are committing copyright infringement, they should refrain from using copyrighted material. Although it is common knowledge that blogs are the opinions and points of view from various people, bloggers themselves should not deliberately spread false information. Furthermore, the opinions in blogs should always be easily identified, as well as the facts. Bloggers may not have the responsibilities of journalists, but they have the responsibility not to steal or mislead followers. Bloggers should have enough integrity to preserve the credibility in their discussions. If the topic that is being discussed contains false information, then the entire blog loses credibility. Bloggers may not be news reporters, but they must pride themselves in their ability to use the news and current events to spark educated and meaningful...

With the students using the internet and web- based technologies, it is important to have the right innovative tools to gain experience in determining credible information on the websites being researched. ...Initial Post I conducted a search on pain management using two different databases, CINAHL with full text and Academic Search Complete. I also searched the same topic using the popular search engine, Google. I used the key the words “evidence-based” and “nursing” for each search. The articles on CINHAL Plus with full text and Academic Search Complete are peer reviewed, written and edited by professionals, for health care professions, and not for the lay person (Schmidt & Brown, 2012). The articles were specific to the key words entered. With the medical terminology used, these articles would be very difficult for a lay person to read. When I searched using Google I came up with thousands of results. Many of the suggestions were not at all what I intended and some just gave abstracts and not full texts. Not all of these websites were from a credible source or written by credentialed authors. I would advise the lay person to be cautious on which sites they visit. Wikipedia and WebMD are very popular sites by non-clinical individuals and patients should be reminded these are not reputable sites. I would inform them that gathering information is a good idea however, they should discuss the information they have found with their physicians. They should also be aware the information they choose should be written by knowledgeable authors and should be current (Schmidt & Brown, 2012). References Schmidt, N. A., & Brown, J. M. (2012). ...Method of detecting Anthrax Whether its natural or man made The key to meeting the challenge is to approach it in a systematic, comprehensive way. We must fully examine the biological threats we face, address the capabilities we must continue to build in order to mitigate them, and consider the complex legal and ethical issues that will arise during a biological calamity if ever we have one. They seek to cure, vaccinate, and alleviate suffering. Yet that is only one part of what must be done during such a crisis. If there is one lesson that the 7 years since 9/11 should have taught, it is that advance planning is the only way to respond to a major threat to safety and security. threat awareness and detection, prevention and protection, and response and recovery. First, we must search for signs of laboratories across the globe that could be poised to weaponize materials. For the 91 million people who come to the United States by air, or the 411 million who arrive by land each year, we can screen for incoming nuclear or radiological devices, but it is pure fantasy to imagine medically testing all of them as well. If we had credible information about a pandemic brewing elsewhere in the world, we could redirect flights and aircraft from the affected region and screen their passengers more intensively. So screening can be of value, but not without the intelligence that lets us focus on those individuals who might pose a genuine risk. Detection depends...

...English 1001- Rhetorical Analysis Essay: You Deserved Rejection! Or At Least Your Essay Did… In the article, “To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me”, Suzy Lee Weiss addresses a multitude of reasons why she believed herself along with others were not accepted into various colleges. Published on March 29, 2013, it is one of many articles Weiss has contributed to The Wall Street Journal. The Wall Street Journal viewed at wsj.com is a business focused, English language international newspaper based in New York City where her article is placed under the commentary. It is clear from the essay that being rejected from her dream school was her kairos event that prompted and gave her the motivation for this writing that is important to her. Weiss--a senior at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh—has written this among many other articles posted in the NY Daily News and others. Presenting her thesis early in her article, Weiss creates a foundation for the six arguments she establishes in defense for her claim that colleges lied to her; however, due to her lack of specific examples, statistics, and false claims, she fails to support her argument sufficiently. In her article, Weiss strengthens her ethos and logos drawing in on her very own feelings and thoughts for the varied audience of wsj.com. With her supporting evidence, she entreats the viewers to realize the devastation caused by Ivy League colleges telling applicants to “Just be yourself”. She goes on to claim this...

...Evaluating Website Credibility Introduction The internet is the primary source individuals use when researching information including, but not limited to, medical information. The goal is to review the credibility of a website using five key criteria which are accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage (Colorado Community Colleges Online Library, 2015). For the purpose of the assignment, the website being evaluated by these five criteria is www.midwife.org which was found using the search engine Google that can be located by using the domain google.com. I chose this website because it provides accurate and up to date information in regards to the ever growing and evolving practice of midwifery both in the United States as well as other developed and underdeveloped countries. The full name of the website is the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the URL to locate this site is http://www.midwife.org/. The purpose of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, also known as the ACNM, is to “establish midwifery as the standard of care for women and to lead the profession through education, clinical practice, research, and advocacy.” (American College of Nurse-Midwives, 2015). Evaluation of Website In regards to the five criteria used to evaluate the credibility of websites, the ACNM meets all five of the criteria set forth. “The ACNM gets its national work done through the collaborative effort of its office staff and a vast network of volunteer representatives...

...information” lists https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ (MedlinePlus) in the top three. I chose this site as being reliable and credible because the information I find is similar to the content in my textbooks, and most of it is also supported by research foundations and clinical trials. On the other hand, there are many websites providing health-related information that seems legitimate, but sometimes hard to believe. An example of such a website is http://www.doctoryourself.com (Doctor Yourself). I chose this site because I wanted to learn more about the author’s claims that vitamins can cure diseases. This paper compares and contrasts MedlinePlus with Doctor Yourself and examines each website’s potential credibility. Discussion To determine a website’s credibility, it is necessary to evaluate it based on several key points. As outlined in the provided website evaluation tool (NURS 3170, n.d.) these points include authority, objectivity, authenticity, reliability, timeliness, relevance, and efficiency. Authority Authority can be evaluated by focusing on the author of the website. MedlinePlus was created by The U.S. National Library of Medicine. Information located on...

...Essay Plan Introduction: Thesis: Wikipedia is not a creditable source of information for tertiary-level writing. Body Paragraph 1: * Meaning of Wikipedia * Misleading readers * Vandalism * Reference Gorman Body Paragraph 2: * Academics publishing work * Editing * Reference Lu and Askin Body Paragraph 3: * Counter argument * Credibility * Reference Lu and Askin AND Crovitz and Smoot Conclusion: Convenient but not accurate! The purpose of this essay is to provide insight as to why Wikipedia is not a creditable source of information for tertiary-level writing. Tertiary-level writing involves the use of valid reference sources to show supporting evidence. Anyone can contribute anonymously and edit pages in the non-profit internet encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, automatically reducing the credibility of the popular website. Wikipedia is known as the free encyclopaedia, an encyclopaedia in Gorman’s opinion (2007, p. 273) is ‘created by experts and monitored by professional editors who themselves are often subject experts’ and believes that Wikipedia should be recognised for what it is, ‘opinions untested by experts’. Wikipedia has a large amount of worldwide anonymous volunteers that monitor, and then clean up articles. Professionals may not want to give out their knowledge for free and therefore posts that are incorrect will never be corrected by the appropriate person. On the other hand, people who claim...
