...History Of Forest Hill Community Prepared by George Cottle, Sr. Location Forest Hill Community is situated on the waters of Bradshaw and Spruce Run. Starting at A. L. Campbell's, on Greenbrier River, three miles from Forest Hill and running to J. T. Campbell's, on a line from there including P. M. Garrison's; thence South West to and including W. L. Redmond's; thence North to and including C. G. Ramsey's; and thence Northeast by J. S. Canterberry's and including him to the starting point; it includes twenty-five square miles. It is inhabited by sixty-six families with a population of four hundred. Points of Interest One of the natural wonders of this community is situated on the farm of P. M. Foster, and is known as the "Seven Wonders". This is an immense rock in the shape of an inverted pyramid. It is about thirty feet tall, four by six feet at the base, and about twenty by thirty feet at the top. Tradition tells how it received its name. It is said that a man upon viewing this Wonder, wondered six times how it stood up and one time if it was supported by an oak which grew by the side of the rock. He said, "You are surely a "Seven Wonders". This rock is covered with names and dates. Some of them are more than a hundred years old. Another natural wonder of Forest Hill Community, is known as the "Devil's Den". This is situated on the line between J. H. Rogers and J. T. Canterberry's, and consists of a huge wash basin, writing desk, and a seat. This wonder is of sand stone...

...Windshield Survey Paper Community Health Nursing Excelsior College Professor Debra Masterson November 04, 2014 This windshield survey was created using my community in Ocala which is located in Marion county Florida. The city itself has a population of over 319,000 according to the 2013 census and I am sure it has grown since then as the city continues to grow and development almost daily. With this population it is the 45th most populated city in Florida. Ocala is well know the horse capital of the world. It was given that name because the first thoroughbred horse farm in Florida was developed in 1943 by Carl G. Rose. One of his horses won a large race making the first thoroughbred to be raised in Florida right out of Ocala. The community itself is well populated and is often considered to be congested at times with due to the minimum about of main roads in the small city. There is variety of subdivision in Ocala that definitely shows many of the residenta economic status. There are some areas that have homes that should be condemned, as they are not well kept. However, as you pass these areas you get the feel that there is so much history in these communities. I see people outside talking, children running and playing in the streets, groups of elderly adults sitting under trees and talking to each other. Within the city of Ocala the homes are built in very close geographic locations. Some of the homes have the...

Singapore utilises other ways of assessment to show not only is academic knowledge is important, the skills that are developed along with the other forms of assessment are equally important. With this, students will then pay more attention in developing these skills that are crucial in the 21st century...

... The largest natural disaster ever recorded in the history of the United States was hurricane Andrew, which struck South Dade County, Florida, as midnight turned the clock into August 24, 1992. Contrary to what the American news media broadcast across the United States and throughout Europe, the first outer wall of the hurricane unexpectedly slammed into South Dade, packing 214+ mph winds which quickly escalated to 350+ mph. Most of the 414,151 residents living in the danger zone were asleep when the outer wall struck. Thousands of them lost their lives, for no one in South Dade had been evacuated or even advised to evacuate. (Frankovich, 2001) Hurricane Andrew was a powerful category 4 hurricane, which made landfall in Dade County, Florida on August 24, 1992. The hurricane was later upgraded to a category 5 due to the storms extremely strong and damaging winds. When the storm made landfall it reportedly had sustained winds of 145 mph and wind gusts of 175 mph. In Dade County alone, the storm left 15 dead and approximately 250,000 residents homeless. According to (Rappaport, 1992) an additional 25 lives were lost due the after effects of the storm. No one knew exactly how big the storm would be and how much it would impact the southern part of Florida. Damage caused by the storm was estimated at $25 billion dollars. In Dade County alone, some 25,000 homes were destroyed and over 101,000 were damaged. In Homestead, Florida nearly all of the mobile homes were lost...

...Professional Presence and Influence Cynthia Ellis March 1, 2015 Western Governors University In our practice, professional presence is the foundation on which we establish what it means to be human and to care for our fellow man. To be a nurse and choose the many sacrifices it takes to spend one’s life caring for others requires knowledge of one’s own personal beliefs and values. Our own past experiences with life and how they have shaped us also influence how we relate and treat our patients. These things work together to create our mindful presence. Throughout our years of practice, our experience with patients, coworkers and physicians as well as a growing knowledge base help us develop a road map which we follow in our everyday work. These things help us better understand others and what it truly means to be human. As we gain a better understanding for the very people we serve, we can better create a healing environment. Jean Watson, a nurse theorist, best defines a human as “a valued person in and of him or herself to be cared for, respected, nurtured, understood and assisted. He is to be viewed as greater than and different from the sum of his or her parts.” She then says that nursing is “a human science of persons and human health, illnesses, and experiences that are mediated by professional, personal, scientific, esthetic, and human transactions.” (Watson, 1999) Surely, with her definition of nurses, we are to be held to a very high standard as well as charged...

...Executive Summary Entrepreneurs play a vital role in economic development as key contributors to technological innovation and new job growth. Further, entrepreneurs help build communities in ways such as providing jobs, conducting business locally, creating and participating in entrepreneurial networks, investing in community projects, and giving to local charities. Realizing both the economic and social impact of entrepreneurship, many states and local communities have implemented aggressive strategies aimed at cultivating and nurturing entrepreneurs. In order for governments to effectively develop policies that will foster entrepreneurship, they must first understand the difference between entrepreneurs and small business owners, common misconceptions about entrepreneurs, and where entrepreneurs are located. Using this information, combined with entrepreneurial strategies outlined by the National Governors Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices, state governments can develop specific and effective measures to support entrepreneurs. While cursory inspection shows entrepreneurial growth companies (EGCs) and small business owners have a lot in common, there are certain distinct differences between the two. Controlled growth and continued profitability are the goal for many small businesses while EGCs are generally geared toward rapid growth and productivity gains. In addition, EGCs often have significant economic effects on a community, accounting for a large...

...Contemporary Hate Crimes, Law Enforcement, and the Legacy of Racial Violence Ryan D. King University at Albany-SUNY Robert D. Baller University of Iowa This article investigates the association between past lynchings (1882 to 1930) and contemporary law enforcement responses to hate crimes in the United States. While prior research indicates a positive correlation between past levels of lynching and current social control practices against minority groups, we posit an inverse relationship for facets of social control that are protective of minorities. Specifically, we hypothesize that contemporary hate crime policing and prosecution will be less vigorous where lynching was more prevalent prior to 1930. Analyses show that levels of past lynching are associated with three outcome variables germane to hate crime policing and prosecution, but the effect of lynching is partly contingent on the presence of a minority group threat. That is, past lynching combined with a sizeable black population largely suppresses (1) police compliance with federal hate crime law, (2) police reports of hate crimes that target blacks, and in some analyses (3) the likelihood of prosecuting a hate crime case. Our findings have implications for research on law and intergroup conflict, historical continuity in the exercise of state social control, and theories that emphasize minority group threat. Steven F. Messner University at Albany-SUNY onflict theories of crime and criminal law posit that the...

The focus of the credit union is to help its members save, borrow, and receive affordable financial services. One way is by offering higher interest rates on savings accounts which can be important to people in general but also to the young population who are just starting to save for college or some other long term item such as a car. Typically, credit unions charge lower fees compared to banks and provide credit at competitive rates. Like any other business, Credit Unions must have enough income/ assets to cover expenses related to running a business or risk the possibility of becoming insolvent. Lending money to members is a source of income for credit unions. When borrowers default on this lent money, this puts a credit union at risk and causes tougher rules on responsible lending. They are also known for providing service at the personal level by helping their members plan for the future. The first credit union was founded in southern Germany in the year 1864 by...
