Assessment Tool Analysis Paper
Jean Watson’s theory of human caring focused on establishing a caring relationship with patients. She believed in treating them as holistic (mind, body and spirit) being. To further secure our understanding and relationship with our patients we can use our assessment tool analysis to better know them. Becks depression inventory, dysfunctional attitude scale and social support questionnaire are the assessments that I have chosen to look deeper at the depressed population and community function. These tools should take me deeper on how this population might have gotten to where they are and why they are a vulnerable population. Created by Dr. Aaron T. Beck, the Beck Depression Inventory is an assessment tool design to determine the presence and the severity of symptoms of depression. Composed of 21 multiple choice questions it aims to assess the symptoms and attitudes specifically seen on depressed patients. To interpret Becks Depression inventory, the score have to be tallied and added. According to ( ) a person that scored 1-10 are considered normal, 11-16 has mild mood disturbance, 17-20 borderline clinical depression, 21-30 moderate depression, 31-40 severe depression, and anything over 40 is considered to have extreme depression. This tool can be use in many of our vulnerable population, but we are going to concentrate on the teens and young adults to explore the correlation between depression and obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control obesity is the most common chronic illness in America at this moment and according to the American Psychologist Association depression is the most common psychological condition. Research states that obesity leads to other illnesses in the long run, but how do we become obese. According to () there is a correlation between depression and obesity. This is where Becks Depression Inventory takes its role. In my opinion, if we can determine using the Becks Depression Inventory if one obese person is depress, then we can concentrate more on the psychological things rather than the physical things to help this person. In nursing world we encounter an increase amount obesity that leads to juvenile diabetes in our hospitals and clinics. It is important to be aware for any signs of depression upon assessment of your patient nursing. We as nurses need to engage more with our patients to let them open up with you. Now that we know a person is depressed, we can dig even deeper on how a person got to this point. Using the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale we can measure how a depressed person sees himself/herself, the future and the outside world. The scale measure and indicate your emotional weakness and where psychological strengths lie. The questionnaire includes 40 multiple-choice statements/attitudes that we sometimes hold. Then for every statement the person needs to decided how much they agree with the statement, ranging from one (totally agree) to seven (totally disagree). After giving your score in every statement, it will be tallied/added to see where you place on the scale. According to () The scale goes as follows, 79 and below (very low level of dysfunctional attitude), 80-112 (low level of dysfunctional attitude),113-142 (medium level of dysfunctional attitude), 143-169 (high level of dysfunctional attitudes), 170 and above (very high level of dysfunctional attitudes). This scale is more suitable to a depressed person due to negative life events. This population since they went through lots of stress their thinking is gradually changing. According to () dysfunctional thinking includes the “all or nothing thinking” or the tendency having negative conclusion without evidence. Being negative on one detail instead of seeing the big picture and making the situation escalade. They label self and others negatively and ignoring the evidence that supports the real conclusion. In short their feelings or attitude through life is already preconceived in their mind. This leads to their dysfunctional attitudes. If this can be identified then again we can concentrate on fixing this dysfunction. Another assessment tool kit that one can use is the Social Support Questionnaire. This questionnaire is design to see how one community or society trust each other, the level of their support to one another and action to any need of the community. It shows how the involvement of the population and/or the lack of. This assessment is beneficial to non-profit organization one community is trying to establish. This questionnaire is put on to know if one organization can get enough support and volunteers. This is seen on a much organized neighborhoods and communities.
