In today’s world of technology, every aspect of our lives involves some type of information systems. One of the largest industries that use high tech equipment today, are hospitals. The process for choosing what and which systems to utilize, come from feedback of the nurses and doctors who work at the hospitals. In choosing which systems to use, healthcare committees require feedback from all staff in what’s needed in the facilities to better care for patients. According to the Handbook of Informatics, the purpose for needs assessment is to see where the organization is presently at and what the organization needs to do for them to grow.
Before an organization can setup an EHR they have to make evaluations of strengths and weaknesses within the organization. They evaluate the needs of the patients, how easy or difficult a patient can access their information, or what the organization can do to make it more convenient for the patients, in regards to treatments or facility visits. Needs assessment is the first phase of developing a more efficient way of making the organization stronger. It starts with the development of the steering committee, needs assessment are then developed, they identify systems requirements, and then the systems are weighed out to see which ones are in need and demand. “In the process of conducting a needs assessment, the nurse planner collects and analyzes data to determine where learner are now in relation to the desired outcome, where they need to be, and what educational approaches would be effective in bridging that gap”(Dickerson, 2013, p.104). When a needs assessment is determined it means being able to look into all areas of operation in the organization to analyze deficiencies, and how these gaps can be bridged.
