Issue of the study:

1. How the company motivate the employees to achieve the goals?

Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1917) put forward the idea that workers are motivated mainly by pay. Based on his theory, he said that the workers do not naturally enjoy work and so need close supervision and control. Therefore managers should break down production into a series of small tasks. Taylor’s methods were widely adopted as businesses saw the benefits of increased productivity levels and lower unit costs. However workers soon came to dislike Taylor’s approaches as they were only given boring, repetitive tasks to carry out and were being treated little better human machines. Company could also afford to lay off workers as productivity levels increased. This led to an increase in strikes and another forms of industrial action by dis-satisfied workers.

However, based on another theory which is has been introduced by Elton Mayo (1880-1949), he believed that workers are not just not concerned with the money but could better motivated by having their social needs met whilst at work. He focused on managers taking more of an interest in the workers, treating them as people who have worthwhile opinions and realising that workers enjoy interacting together.

Compare to the Taylor’s and Mayo’s theory, we would like to further investigate this issue and get the solution between the methods used by human resource management to motivate their employees. Do they apply the theories that have been introduced by Taylor and Mayo?

...Living Richly 1. The compensation of the CEOs and other top managers did have an impact on the problem that they created for themselves. At the time though they did not care I don’t think. All they cared about was how big of a bonus and pay they could receive. Again it all came down the almighty dollar and how much they could make. I think it all as to do with greed. I don’t think they really cared about what was happening with their businesses they were running. They saw how much money they were given for giving out money to bad financial risks. In the end I don’t think they cared how it was going to affect their business in the long run. All they care about was the short run and how much money they could make. Instead of giving out compensation based on booking profits, they should have just given them a flat salary. That way any extra profits that were made could have been used to get Citi out of trouble instead of the government having to kick in taxpayer dollars to bail them out so they wouldn’t go under. 2. Of course the board of directors actions had a major effect on how everything played out at the company. They had the power to stop what was going on and they did nothing about it. Maybe at the time they didn’t think anything was wrong, but as the article stated some thought that they did not have enough time to handle the situation. If this was the case I think if you can’t handle or have enough time to do the job as a board of director you should resign. ...

...First it is crucial to understand the concept of comparative advantage which is "The person or country that produces a good with a smaller quantity of inputs, or that produces more output per unit of input, is said to have an absolute advantage in producing that good”. To illustrate the concept of comparative advantage requires at least two goods and at least two places where each good could be produced with scarce resources in each place. The example drawn here is from Ehrenberg and Smith (1997), page 136. Suppose the two goods are food and clothing, and that "the price of food within the United States is 0.50 units of clothing and the price of clothing is 2 units of food. [Suppose also that] the price of food in China is 1.67 units of clothing and the price of clothing is 0.60 units of food." Then we can say that "the United States has a comparative advantage in producing food and China has a comparative advantage in producing clothing. Countries usually trade to buy goods that are produced at a lower cost elsewhere. Countries and people have different costs of production or (to put it differently) different abilities in producing goods. They can take advantage of their differences in order to make themselves better off. When they do this, they experience gains from trade. (Moffatt, 2011) First, endowments of key inputs may vary from nation to nation, just as endowments of talents, skills, and physical characteristics vary across individuals. For example, commercial farming...

...QUESTION 1: IKEA after being well established in the European market they have decided to expand their business into US market as they see enormous opportunity due to its vast market, which gives IKEA to improvise its business performance to a greater extend. IKEA have adopted on relying primarily on third-party manufacturers, IKEA’s engineers design a low-cost modular furniture that customers can easily assemble, and they specifically focused on serving for young customers who desires style for a low cost. The furniture’s in IKEA were designed clean-lined and appealing in a Euro-Style. However there are some possible challenges that might be faced by IKEA when entering the US market and this needed to be identified before entering the market. 1.1 ONE FOR ALL One of the major problem that IKEA might be facing in US will be caused by its concept of one for all. This concept can be a major obstacle for its performance in US as IKEA unwilling to adapt the size of furniture according the market’s demand, since IKEA wants to have one type globally. ...Case Assignment 2.1, pg 1 1. What’s your opinion regarding forced ranking performance appraisals? Do they motivate employees? Explain. While at first I would somewhat agree with forced ranking performance appraisals, from a management and leadership perspective in order to assess who deserves merit for recognition, pay raises and promotions. But from an employees’ point of view, it can be very demotivating if one finds themselves at the lower end of the spectrum. Instrumentality may be negative and affect overall job security and satisfaction. Individuals may not perceive the forced ranking system as fair when being compared to their coworkers and inputs may vary from person to person. Overall, I feel that forced ranking does not motivate employees as there are a variety of factors to include that may each weigh differently (i.e. job experience, EI, reliability, productivity, quality, etc.). 2. How would equity theory explain some employees’ negative reactions to forced rankings? Explain. The equity theory explains some employees’ negative reactions from forced rankings by changing an employees’ inputs, how much effort to invest into their current job. The attitudes or mindsets of employees’ may change, that job security is more important than a raise. Or, the employee may just decide to resign from their current job position due to annoyance or perceived inequalities. The equity theory centers on overall pay as the outcome. 3. ...Areas Of Overlap An area of overlap for a Human Resources consulting include the area of employment laws based in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as amended. HR consultants serving as strategic partners are giving access to sensitive information consequently, the client expects the consultant to act professionally and ethically concerning distribution of information that is the property of the client (Stewart, 2011). When an HR consultant departs one client and joins another client it is understood that the knowledge acquired at the previous company is not only sensitive, it is also valuable if shared with the new client. It is worth mentioning that all information is not sensitive. For instance if the overlap is an issue such as workplace violence and the HR consultant devised a training module that reduced the occurrence of violence by 20%, then this information can be rightly shared with the new client. Conversely, if the HR consultant was present during strategic planning session with the previous client and learned information that would give the new client a competitive edge, doing so would be an ethical violation and could led to criminal prosecution. Overlapping issues require the HR professional to use good judgment in addition to following the ethical guidelines outlined by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM code of Ethics). SHRM requires all of its members and highly recommends all nonmembers to follow the ethical guidelines posted on the SHRM...

...Programming Development – Personal Learning Management Programming Development: Personal Learning Management Part 3 Author: Stephanie Heinrichs University of Phoenix – PRG 211 3/22/14 Programming Development: Personal Learning Management The part of the program I believe to need an array would be the entire program. The Subject, the Classes, the weeks, the keywords, and the notes. I am still unsure as to how the arrays work, I have been trying to practice them, but there is not much in the way of instruction on how to use them. I know it can be a list or a table, which works well with the program. For example, the program can be a table starting from the subject, breaking down into the classes, which break down into the weeks that break down into the keywords and the notes. In my opinion, the only way the program could be put together in its simplest form would be in an array. Using an array can reduce the number of variable names needed in a program because a single array can be used instead of a collection of simple variables to store related data (Venit, Stewart & Drake, Elizabeth; Prelude to Programming Concepts and Design; Chapter 6- Arrays: Lists and Tables.). So using an array is the best way to simplify my entire program. The best part of the array is being able to set up the search for the index of keywords. It will make being able to type in the keyword...
