...Communication Process Kathy Kirsch BCOM/275 October 17, 2011 Donald M. Marrin The high cost of communication or the lack of, as the case maybe. When a veteran lead truck driver, of 30-plus years, faces a tour manager who has no idea of the transportation logistics of time travel for tractor trailers, the results are explosive as well as expensive. Concert tours consist of many elements that if there is just one hiccup, the domino effect cascades like a waterfall. The transportation logistics is just one piece of many within the structure. Traveling from point A to point B, safely, and on time, is the goal of the transportation element. When just one truck is late with equipment the domino effect starts, costing into the thousands of dollars. Herein sets the scene for lack of communication between sender, the lead truck driver and receiver, the tour manager. From Portland, Oregon, to Chico, California, it is 490 miles, nine hours of driving. That is an average speed of 54.4 miles per hour for nine hours non-stop. That is on flat, straight land. Between Portland and Chico, there are two mountain ranges to cross with an elevation of six to seven thousand feet. If a semi is loaded heavy, traveling speeds up the inclines can get down to 25 to 30 mph. There goes the average traveling speed needed to reach destination within that nine hours. Time needed would be 11 hours of driving for the semi. Another consideration that the speed limit throughout California...

...individuals are required to make for the good of the group. In BUSI 2208 there is one group assignment – the comprehensive project. Your task is to discuss and compose a short contract of no more than 1000 words, containing the ‘ground rules’ for your group for this assignment. Be sure to identify all group members including their complete names, email addresses, and student numbers. All group members must sign the contract. The group contract is a very important document. Your professor will request that your group bring your contract to any discussions you may have regarding contribution of group members (hopefully this will not happen frequently). Your group contract should discuss the following: 1. Who has what skills, experiences, and knowledge that the group can draw upon? Do group members want to work in their area of strength or try to develop new skills? 2. If a group member is away on vacation, becomes ill, or has work commitments, how will the group accommodate that person’s schedule? 3. If someone cannot be reached and it looks like your group may not complete its assignment on time, what backup system have you agreed upon? 4. What does each group member want to get out of this course? 5. What level of grade is the group aiming for, and is this goal consistent among members? 6. How will you accomplish the tasks necessary to complete the assignment? Will you work...

Then fill in the blanks of the chart below. Misunderstanding #1 Who was the sender? Co-worker Who was the receiver? Myself What was the message? “Please order coveralls for a technician at the refinery using the protocol previously sent “(L. Metzger, personal communication, August 30, 2011) What channel was used to send the message? Email What was the misunderstanding that occurred? The protocol previously sent was instructions for ordering coverall for a regular refinery worker. Sender failed to state that this was a contractor and not a regular refinery worker. The protocol previously sent does not give instructions to order directly through the vendor as opposed to online ordering. Contractors require special patches on their coveralls that can only be obtained through the vendor directly. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? Had the sender specified this was a contractor and to “spot buy” directly from the vendor. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity? When communicating via email, make sure to include who, what, where, when, and why. What seemed to be the main...

What was the misunderstanding that occurred: In situation 1 I was told I had met my quota and therefore was in the clear and was guaranteed employment for another year regardless of future quotas. Two days later I was fired because I was told I did not meet my quota and the standards had changed and I did not fall in the proper sales I needed to be in order to keep my job. Even though this change was never told to me. In situation 2 the misunderstanding was the day I needed to switch with my coworker. She thought I said Monday when I said Tuesday and therefore she showed up on the wrong day. I ended up having to go in anyway. 6. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided: In situation 1 I feel I communicated with my manager as best that I could but I probably should have communicated further with higher management.
