...Foreign Auto Shop Part1 Alan has been the owner and manager of a small auto repair shop for seven years. The auto shop has a steady and royal clientele who appreciate the fact that they receive quick, reliable services at a fair price. Alan employee’s seven mechanics and two office workers. Gil and Hans are the two oldest mechanics and they are the easiest to supervise. When Alan assigns work to them (mostly high-precision, specialist jobs), they do it quickly and hardly ever make a mistake. Bart and Herbie are also skilled mechanics and Bart specializes in repairing motorcycles, and Herbie is whiz at troubleshooting engine problems. Three younger workers do the jobs that call for lower-level skills under Alan’s more careful guidance. Kirk has a degree in industrial arts but he could not get a job in his specialty without moving to another city and he seems to have resigned himself to auto repair work. Lamont enjoys working on sports cars and is getting to be quite an expert at operating the electronic diagnostic machines. Joanie does general mechanical work and does it well. Alan takes care of customers when they drop off their cars in the morning, then he plans the work schedule and assigns the mechanics to work on particular cars. Most of the work is done by individual mechanics but occasionally a job requires two mechanics to work together. The work of repairing cars and conducting routine maintenance on them is welldefined; there are standard procedures and standard times...

The Epic of Gilgamesh the author of this tale is current unknown or anonymous, but was considered to be a great story among the people of Mesopotamia. It was most likely written around 2000B.C. The Epic tells a story of Gilgamesh, the king of a Sumerian city of Uruk. It tells how he was in search of the secret of immortality. He found a man by the name of Utnapishtim, who was granted eternal life by the gods. Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh the story of how he came to be immortal. He started off by saying how he...

...rest of the book of Genesis. It is said to be written sometime between 1450-1410 B.C. to the people of Isreal to record God’s creation of the world and His desire to have people set apart to worship Him. Moses, the writer, starts off with the creation (God working for six days and the resting on the seventh day after the creation of the heavens and earth, along with man and woman), then leads to the fall (the first sin – Adam and Eve), flood (God called Noah to build an ark, so God could restore creation by a flood), and then the formation of the new nations (confusion of languages). To really grasp the reading of Genesis, one must understand that the text centers on God’s promises. The major events are the creation of life (heavens, earth, man, and woman), temptation, sin, first murder, flood, and life after. The main personalities in Genesis are: God, Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, Noah, Abram (Abraham), and so on. Abraham Abraham, or Abram, lived from about 2166 – 1991 B.C., as they say. Abraham was young when God called him for an assignment. He was faithful and did as he was told. His story is told in Genesis 11 – 25, but he is also mentioned in Exodus, Acts, Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews. The first Hebrew, Abram, born in Ur of the Chaldeans, but most of his life was spent in Canaan, where God called him to venture out, to an unfamiliar place, which is now Israel. God made a promise to Abraham that if he took this trip to this unfamiliar place, He (God) would give land,...

...Disasters EAS 201 – Written Assignment 5 1. What is the difference between a flash flood and a regional flood? Are the causes the same? Are the effects the same? Flash Flood; are walls of water, set up in a matter of hours by a large convective storm. Many automobile related deaths in a flash flood are in 2 feet of water due to the buoyant lift and current of the water. In 1997, in Antelope Canyon a flash flood took 12 hikers, tumbling them down the canyon as helpless on lookers could only watch. A wall of water builds due to steep topography, channeling the water and striking a particular area in a thunderstorm. In Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado in 1976, a thunderstorm remained stationary in the canyon for four hours. The topography fed the flash floods and carried many hikers and tourist down the canyon to their death. Many survived by fleeing their cars and climbing to safety, seeking shelter along the canyon walls. Those who chose to stay with their cars were swept away in the flood and died. The weight and proximity of the vehicle couldn’t allow them to achieve the safety they required. Regional Flood; different from flash floods, regional floods inundate an area with rainfall over several weeks, causing fewer deaths and often more damage. Occurring in areas of large river valleys and low topography, these heavy rains often result due to cyclonic systems. Their can be many contributing factors as to why a particular river may flood; geological age, riverbed (shape...

...The largest disaster in recent years in this student’s region--south west Tennessee--has been arguably the 2011 Mississippi River flooding. The Mississippi River crested in Memphis, Tennessee in May of 2011 at 48 feet, one foot below the record flood level in modern history (National Geographic, 2011). The same source indicated this was caused by both a severe melt and heavy rains in Minnesota and the Dakotas, causing problems downstream. This caused tributaries to back up inside the city and contributed to major inland flooding, including inundating major hospital grounds and other public service locations with several feet of water. Many along the river banks and associated areas were evacuated prior to the water reaching their homes. Some neighborhoods are no longer standing. According to the New York Times, President Obama declared flood-affected zones in Tennessee along the Mississippi River as disaster areas, after the river stage hit 48 (.7 feet shy of the record) and flooded many low-lying neighborhoods (Tackett & Robertson, 2011). This student as working for the City of Memphis as a Police Officer II during that time, and was charged with the observation and...

...The environments that businesses operate within today are increasingly complex, dynamic and uncertain (Cooksey, 2003, p. 204). Learning to adapt to, and benefit from, changes and unpredictability in the environment is essential to an organisation’s success. However with this environment as the context for organisational learning, difficulties with traditional linear organisational learning becomes clear (Cooksey, 2003, p. 205). Systems thinking provides a way to understand the internal and external relationships within the organisation and the way that these can influence the organisation. In addition to building a more complete understanding of how organisation’s function, systems thinking brings together the elements that an organisation requires in order for it to be a learning organisation. These include personal mastery, team learning, building shared vision, effective leadership and learning processes and practices. In order to make sense of the complex tasks and problems that occur within organisational environments, we break them down into smaller tasks and problems which, although it makes them more manageable, leaves us with a disjointed view and we lose sight and our connection with the ‘whole’ (Senge, 2006, p. 3). Cooksey (2003, p. 206) notes that in the short term this search for simple, generalised solutions to problems within the business environment may provide favourable results, in the longer term it will often fail. The reason it fails is that the solution...
