In this report, I will be discussing 3 competencies that I have personally developed on and/or still need to develop on. Through working at The Langham Melbourne over the past 5 months, the competencies that really stood out to me were: Self Sufficiency, Professional Networks, Industry and Business Knowledge, and Personal Organisation.

The first competency was Self Sufficiency. When it came to taking responsibility for meeting my own learning and developmental needs, I would rated myself 3.5. I was afraid to speak up about what I wanted or needed to know more about. In seeking opportunities to learn new skills, it was a 2 because I did not do this from the start of my placement and only on.

Continuing to set new challenging goals and meeting them rates a 4. Unknowingly, I may have set myself challenges but did not see it that way, thus, less pressure on myself and therefore being able to reach my goals with little worry. In future, I would take some time outside work to think about what I am doing wrong, so I can improve. I should not worry about not being able to find the opportunities and also take initiative …show more content…
I rated myself a 3 in searching for information through varied sources because though I did have various sources, it may not have been an ethical way to find out about it. For example, if I had trouble clocking hours at work, I should have spoken to Human Resources first about letting me multi-skill earlier than they would normally let staff members do so. In establishing networks to gather information, a rating of 4 as I have done so effectively in In-Room Dining. I consistently check with them for extra shifts and prove myself worth the time by taking initiative and asking pertinent questions about the processes that go on in the department, in which I also rate myself a 4. After all, “no one wants to deal with company that cannot rely on consistency.” (DeMers,

Competence in International Assignment

...Introduction The main purpose of this essay is to illustrate the importance of the idea of competency as well as seeks to outline its application to staff undertaking international assignments. Lucia & Lepsinger (1999) define competency as “a cluster of related knowledge, skills, and attitudes that affects a major part of one’s job (a role or responsibility), that correlates with performance on the job, that can be measured against well-accepted standards, and that can be improved via training and development.” People or the organization should possess the core competencies to excel in work’s performance and hence be improved in the future to achieve effectiveness in work and organization’s goal (Ibid). Why have the idea of competency become so important? Organizations today identified the key to business success through strategic human resource management (SHRM) (Compton 2009). To achieve SHRM, the strategic plans have to be pro-active and be open to changes in the organization’s external environment such as its competitors and globalization (Ibid). Having a deeper understanding about competencies is critical, as it will allow the organization to focus on achieving organizational goals and responding to the external environment (Lucia & Lepsinger 1999). The Harvard Analytical framework for HRM Figure 1. (Source: Beer et al. 1985) The Harvard analytical framework for HRM in Figure 1 above consists of five main components, which...

By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assignment criteria: * Competency 5: Implement a strategy for reducing conflict. * Propose strategies for reducing conflict based on a systems analysis. * Competency 7: Communicate effectively in a variety of formats. * Communicate in a manner that respects the dignity, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and individual uniqueness of others. For this assignment, you will analyze the conflicts at Webuwrite Academy using systems theory, as described by Wilmot and Hocker in Chapter 7. When people think of conflict, they often tend to think only about the actual conflict itself. They often fail tocontextualize that conflict within the norms and background of a larger organization or group. This type of contextualization is an important part of understanding a conflict more fully, and of better understanding how to resolve the conflict. Systems theory is a method of analyzing conflict that goes beyond looking at individual behavior and goals, and instead focuses on the patterns of interactions between individuals as a part of a whole organization. Systems theory also focuses on the roles that individuals play within organizations. For...
