...The Enlightment was a new idealistic and intellectual movement in the Eighteenth Century that pursued progress for humanity through religious, political and social reforms. I strongly agree with the fact that the Enlightment was essentially the product of educated European men and women who wrote about real problems of the world to an exclusive audience that eventually involved all social classes. Although the Enlightment was born in the salons of France, it rapidly spread across Europe and eventually to Great Britain’s North American colonies. For that reason, I do not completely agree with the statement from the assignment prompt that states “that the Enlightment was essentially the product of educated French men…” The Enlightment flourished in places such as France where people were tired of a tyrannical monarchy and were in search for a representative government that respected and guaranteed individual’s freedom. Shortly, philosophes from Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, and Austria joined the French in their effort to encourage reforms and freedom (Hunt, 596). Unified by these ideas, the philosophes spread knowledge through hand-written letters, printed books and pamphlets that encouraged reform in every aspect of their lives. In the vast Indus River plains (located in what is today Pakistan and western India), under layers of land and mounds of dirt, archaeologists discovered the remains of a 4,600 year-old city. A thriving, urban civilization had existed at the same time as Egyptian and Mesopotamian states — in an area twice each of their sizes. The Indian civilization is one of the most ancient civilizations of the world. It is known as the Sindhu civilization or the Indus Valley civilization or the Aryan civilization. We are fond of broadcasting what we know, think, do, and feel; and we are motivated by business and pleasure because we care about friendship, kinship, health, wealth, education, politics, justice, and culture. A lot of this has to do with technology, of course. We live at a historical moment characterized by the wide availability of multiple modes of communication and stored data, easily and frequently accessed. Our communications are capable of disclosing breadths and depths of personal, personally identifiable, and sensitive information to many people rapidly. In this era of revelation—dominated by portable electronics, intemet social media, reality television, and traditional talk radio—^many of us are losing our sense of privacy, our taste for privacy, and our willingness to respect privacy. Philosophers, interested in the same fundamental questions about the human mind and behavior that occupy psychologists today, began to speculate about the need to examine these issues scientifically. At least one nineteenth-century British philosopher, John Stuart Mill, even proposed the development of a scientific psychology. Meanwhile, physiologists and physicians in Europe made great strides in furthering our understanding of the physiology of the nervous system and, in particular, of the brain. This chapter examines how this experimental physiology combined with philosophical inquiry to create a new experimental psychology in Germany in the late nineteenth century. The chapter opens with a brief discussion of some aspects of German education that made it attractive to American students, and then continues with a look at how Gustav Fechner’s psychophysics provided a standardized set of methods for studying sensory thresholds. The creation of the ‘‘New Psychology’’ and its first laboratory by Leipzig’s Wilhelm Wundt forms the focus of the middle of the chapter.
