Brief for Group Assignment

The group assignment addresses a number of aspects in Leadership and Decision Making. It will involve consideration of leadership theories from different cultural contexts in terms of approach, strategy, or other relevant areas.

The assignment will be carried out in small groups. Your group will be pre-assigned by the Course Team in due course. It is the task of the first named person in each group to co-ordinate the initial meeting. This first meeting must take place by Friday 23rd of February 2013.

The grade awarded for the group assignment will account for 20% of the course assessment.

The group assignment has three parts and forms a portfolio of work. The parts are as listed below:

The objectives of this assignment include:

1. Building your understanding of Leadership and Decision Making by getting you to analyse the process from your own cultural position and other cultural perspectives;
2. Giving you the opportunity to apply tools and techniques that you have learnt in the early part of the course in analysing leadership challenges that arise when operating in a global business environment;
3. Developing your skills in written and visual presentation and in processing information;
4. Managing a cross-cultural group process.

The task is for you and your group to:

Demonstrate an awareness of how leadership ideas operate differently in the cultures represented in your group.

The task requires you to identify the cultural clusters represented by your group members. Each group has representatives of a least two cultural clusters, and you should use the grouping as the basis on which to carry out the analysis.

For the poster you will find it helpful to capture the essence of the layout using photographs, layout diagrams and other graphics. The purpose of these pictures/diagrams will be to reflect the process(es) of the leadership and the idea of cultural differences (or similarities) being studied. You should show how leadership differs or is similar according to cultural clusters.

Each group must submit all three items of the portfolio by 4.00pm Thursday April 25th 2013.

1. Poster

• Each group should produce a poster showing the results of their study and analysis. The poster should be A1 (594mm x 841mm) in size and laminated. Photographs and diagrams should be used to provide evidence. Remember, posters are intended to be read at a greater distance than a standard book; the font size should take this into account. Up to two A4 pages of narrative text may also be attached to your poster for explanatory purposes.

• Posters will be displayed at a date/time to be advised in week commencing April 29th 2013 (week 43). Students should arrive in good time for their allotted poster session. Students will be free to wander around posters to see what other groups have done for the first 15 minutes of the session period. At least one group member must be with the poster at all times. If you are not there to answer questions from the examiners you will be penalised.

• Note: The number of each group should be clearly displayed on each poster (this is your group number allocated to you by the Course Team).

• The main criteria for poster assessment will be; • Novelty and creative thinking • Clarity and visual impact of the poster display • Representation and analysis of the leadership process • Analysis and critique of the layout • Explanation of the operations strategy • Two sites offering useful guidelines for the production of a poster can be found at: http://connect.le.ac.uk/posters (A detailed, step by step presentation about designing posters – from content, to layout, to colours etc)

2. Poster Summary & Reflection

Each group should submit a 200 word poster summary using the template available on the Leadership pages of MyAberdeen. This should outline further what is being conveyed on the poster.

Each group should also submit a 150 word evaluation/reflection on the group’s learning from this poster process (150 words).

Summaries must be formatted to Harvard style. This includes the formatting of the document itself as well as the formatting of the Reference List.

Ensure your summary is: • at least 1 and ½ line spaced; • written in Arial 12point.

The template for your summary and reflection will be available under the assessment tab on MyAberdeen.

The summary should be submitted with the poster on Thursday April 25th, 2013.

3. Minutes

Each group must submit minutes of group meetings clearly showing target setting, progress checking and group member participation (or lack thereof). Template examples for Meeting Minutes can be found in Word or online. Minutes may be considered as evidence that reflects the individual contribution of group members, and might be used to adjust grades with the possibility of reflecting a greater or lesser contribution of specific individuals.

Minutes should be submitted with the poster and poster summary (but not to Turnitin), and are due by 4:00pm on Thursday April 25th, 2013.
