Bucholzer in 1844 (Document 3), a riot between US Protestants and Catholic immigrants is shown, and a description reveals that these two groups often fought. The description even tells that during one such riot Protestant Americans burned down two Catholic churches, which is a violation of social rights. The US gives the right of freedom of religion in the Bill of Rights, yet it wasn't protected for these immigrants. Social rights are shown to be violated in a letter to the California governor by Norman Assing, a Chinese merchant, after the governor thought to restrict Chinese immigrants from coming to California (Document 5). This is during the time of the California Gold Rush, and immigrants from China, though only a small part of all immigrants, faced discrimination. The letter states that, "The effect of your late message has been…to prejudice the public mind against my people, to enable those who await the opportunity to hunt them down, and rob them of the rewards of their toil…" This sentence reveals how the immigrants didn't have equal social rights if the government was thinking of restricting their entry into the US simply because of where they came from.
