Assisted killing is a divisive issue in contemporary society for a number of reasons including political, economic, and religious factors. The concept of someone welcoming death is contradictory to basic human nature and it can be hard to initially come to terms with. The Right-to-Die movement cites the daunting possibility of a life filled with pain due to ailments and sickness and promotes assisted killing as a favorable alternative when quality of life is below a certain standard. Supporters of this cause also reference the staggering costs of the continued medical assistance needed simply to keep a person alive. Individuals who choose to live while battling terminal or long-term illness will often pay higher premiums for insurance and their …show more content…
The article covers the case of Jahi McMath, a 13 year old girl who has been legally brain dead since last December due to an issue which arose during a routine tonsillectomy. McMath was placed on life support soon after this incident and has remained on it ever since even though doctor’s have still refuse to rescind the certificate that states she is brain dead. Jahi’s mother removed her from the hospital where she was residing this past January and has since cared for her in a family home in New Jersey. New Jersey state law allows patients to remain on life support even after being labeled brain dead due to religious reasons. This case has brought up national interest as proponents of assisted killing state that McMath has no quality of life and by attempting to keep her alive her mother is setting a dangerous precedent which could “redefine the boundary of what is considered brain death.” (Vitez) The McMath family has received support from right-to-life groups and advocates, however, who argue that she has shown signs of progress since her injury and is actually beginning to menstruate which is indicative of brain activity. The family refuses to concede that their daughter is brain dead and feels it is an overreach of boundaries by the law to determine whether or not a person should be taken off life support without their prior

He was born as the eldest child to his father’s second wife. When Freud was four years old, his family shifted and settled in Vienna. Although Freud’s ambition from childhood was a career in law, he decided to enter the field of medicine. In 1873, at the age of seventeen, Freud enrolled in the university as a medical student. During his days in the university, he did his research on the Central Nervous System under the guidance of German physician `Ernst Wilhelm Von Brucke’. Freud received his medical degree in 1881and later in 1883 he began to work in Vienna General Hospital. Freud spent three years working in various departments of the hospital and in 1885 he left his post at the hospital to join the University of Vienna as a lecturer in Neuropathology. Following his appointment as a lecturer, he got the opportunity to work under French neurologist Jean Charcot at Salpetriere, the famous Paris hospital for nervous diseases. So far Freud’s work had been entirely concentrated on physical sciences but Charcot’s work, at that time, concentrated more on hysteria and hypnotism. Freud’s studies under Charcot, which centered largely on hysteria, influenced him greatly in channelising his interests to psychopathology.
