Term | Definition | Use the term in a sentence as it applies to the health care industry. | Digestive System | A group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. | The digestive system allows food to pass through a long tube inside the body known as the alimentary canal or the G.I. tract. | Obesity | A complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat that increases your risk of diseases and health problems. | Dietary changes and weight lost can improve or help prevent the health problems associated with obesity. | Circulatory System | A vast network of organs and vessels that is responsible for the flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen, and other gases. | The circulatory system is responsible for transporting materials throughout the entire body. | Hypertension | A common condition in which the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems such as heart disease. | You can have hypertension also known as high blood pressure for years without any symptoms. | Immune System | A system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease. | To function properly, an immune system must detect a wide variety of agents against disease. | Cardiac Disease | A class of diseases that involve the hearts or blood vessels. | common cardiovascular diseases include heart disease, stroke, hypertensive heart disease, etc. They are also the leading cause of deaths globally. | Respiratory System | A biological system consisting of specific organs and structures used for the process of respiration in an organism. | The respiratory system is involved in the intake and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and the environment. | Nervous System | The part of an animals body that coordinates its voluntary and involuntary actions and transmits signals between different parts of its body. | The nervous systems are found in most multicellular animals, but vary greatly in complexity. | Cancer | A group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to involve or spread to other parts of the body | Cancer is also known as a malignant tumor or an malignant neoplasm. | Skeletal System | Includes all of the bones and joints in the body, each bone is a complex living organ that is made up of many cells, protein fibers, and minerals. | The skeletal system also provides attachment points for muscles to allow movements at the joints. | Endocrine System | Collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things. | The endocrine system includes is in contrast to the exocrine system which secretes its hormones using ducts. | Diabetes | A group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood, or high blood glucose levels. | The most common diabetes symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger, weight gain, unusual weight loss, fatigue, and the numbness and tingling in hands and feet. |
