...Astronomy 122 Third Homework Submission Template 1. Stellar Parallax: When you launch the simulator it should come up like this: Then click: Specify a catalog and chose 30 bright stars from the drop down menu and then also check, “specify a star”. Your screen now looks like this: You are to select two stars for this exercise – GL171.1 and GL 244. Upon selecting a star, click on step 2 - Measure Stellar Parallax to get this measuring screen – every 6 months a measurement is made and plotted in what is called “Error Histogram”. These errors are caused by making measurements through our atmosphere. You need to wait until you have about 40 measurements until you have a reasonable certain average value in the error histogram. That average value is the stellar parallax angle for that star. Once you know this angle the distance to the star (and hence its luminosity) can be determined. Enter your answers to the questions below in the provided table (the response cell will expand with your typing) Question: Your Response a) What are the angles for GL 244 and GL 171.1 GL 244= 0.393 GL 171.1 = 0.043 b) Which one of these two stars has the more accurate determination of the parallax and why? GL 244 has the more accurate determination because it is much closer and has a much higher parallax then GL 171.1. c) Explain selecting only the brightest stars in the sky for parallax measurements would give you a biased sample There needs to be less bright stars or more distanced...

...History of Radio Telescopes Describe the development of single dish radio telescopes and advantages of radio interferometers. Discuss major discoveries that were possible after detection of radio waves from space and how they changed our understanding of Universe. The development of single dish radio telescopes has facilitated a wider range of astronomical discovery through improvements to the instruments by which radio astronomers study celestial objects at radio frequencies. Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, and differ from ordinary visible light due to a longer wavelength and lower frequency. Engineer Karl Guthe Janksy is associated with the first radio antenna built in 1931 to identify astronomical radio sources. This involved an arrangement of reflectors and diploes, or pairs of equal and oppositely magnetized poles separated by a distance, intended to receive short wave radio signals. Labelled “Janksy’s Merry Go Round” due to its position on a turntable, Janksy monitored his instrument over several months and was able to measure the length of an astronomical sidereal day, which is the time it took for a fixed object located on the celestial sphere to return to the same location in the sky. Most notably, was his serendipitous discovery of the Milky Way in 1933 through comparison of his observations with optical astronomical maps, and eventual conclusion that the radiation source peaked when his antenna was aimed at the densest part of the Milky Way in...

...------------------------------------------------- Astro nova March 4, 2015 GS114 March 4, 2015 GS114 Astro Nova is the name of our new planet. This new planet is located on the Perseus Arm of our galaxy. Today our world (Earth) is over populated, highly polluted, and is running out of natural resources to sustain our growing society. We discovered Astro Nova in hopes that one day mankind would be able to inhabit this planet to better our population. Today our dream has become a reality. Astro Nova’s location is a bit farther from earth than expected. It is 7,500 Light Years away. Given that it is that far you may ask what the conditions are like. A normal day for Astro Nova is warm and sunny. Close to the days and seasons we have on earth. There is two land masses on this aquatic planet which only one can sustain life. The land mass that does not sustain life is a volcanic mass which we can use to foster many natural resources. Most of the natural resources we use today for building, producing money, oil etc. Will be able to be mined from this land. On the land ass that will be sustaining our society. There is farming which will take place by using mostly hydroponics. Hydroponics is the method of growing plants in water rather than using soil. The only impact on the location of our planet due to social structures would be that not many people are willing to travel that far. Well if you are worried about the travel time don’t be because we are going to use Cryostasis...

...MLB’s International Expansion Thomas Cyhan June 25, 2012 Nina Campanicki The Major League Baseball team, Houston Astros was founded in 1962, known as the Colt .45s. However the process in creating this team took nearly a decade before they were able to throw out their first pitch as a MLB franchise. MLB refused consideration on multiple occasions to expand the National League from eight to ten teams until other potential owners would form a new baseball league called the Continental League to compete against the National League. Starting baseball operations in 1962, the Colt .45s changed their name in 1965 to the Houston Astros when Judge Roy Hofheinz became sole owner of the team. Houston was renamed the Astros to honor the city’s location as the nation’s space station. Since the Astros were created they have played in three stadiums; Colt Stadium from 1962 to 1964, the Astrodome from 1965 to 1999 and in their current home Minute Maid Park from 2000 to present time. Houston has only made it to the World Series once back in 2005 by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, but lost to the Chicago White Sox in four games. The Astros have had some success in the late 90’s but still have not won a World Series. The team was sold in 2011 to Jim Crane for $610 million dollars. Originally the price tag for the franchise and 45% of the team’s new regional contract was $680 million but the team was discounted because in 2013 the team will be moving from the National League to the...

...“A close examination of the endorsement relationship between Enron Corporation and the Houston Astros between 1999 and 2001 sheds light on an emerging and vital part of the entertainment contract in the twenty-first century the reverse-morals clause.” The reverse morals clause is define as a “reciprocal contractual warranty to a traditional morals clause intended to protest the reputation of talent from the negative, unethical, immoral, and criminal behavior of the endorsee company or purchaser of talent’s endorsement.” A clause gives talent the right to terminate an endorsement contract based on what the negative conduct is. An example is if Tiger Woods’ contract with Gillette were to have a reverse-morals clause then woods could sever his endorsement contract and potentially regain money for damages against Gillette if the company failed to hold what is defined in the contract. In 2000, Enron, a Houston-based energy company was named “America’s most innovative company” by fortune magazine. A year earlier Enron pursued a major league Baseball (MLB) franchise. Enron signed a thirty-year $100 million deal to name the Baseball field Enron field. Two year after Enron naming deal closed they filed for bankruptcy “the largest bankruptcy in American history”. The Astros paid a lot because of Enron’s bankruptcy. The team spent two months trying to get the name Enron erase from the stadium which cost 2.1 million to erase. A year after Enron filed for bankruptcy the Astor, announced that...

...of all time. He played for the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees. He has the most home runs by a switch hitter in Major League Baseball History. A switch hitter is someone who can hit from the right and left side of the plate. Berkman was well known for being a class act and a stand up gut in the Houston community. He now coaches for a baseball team in Houston, which is a branch off of my Major Kinesiology. Kinesiology is a huge, broad field you can do so many things off of this major, such as, Coach, Therapists, and teacher. Lance Berkman started his career late and that’s because he played in the Major League for 13 seasons. Now, he is in my field of study and he coaches and teaches now. Berkman played baseball at Canyon High School, Berkman then attended Rice University, where he played college baseball for the Rice Owls. He was named the 1997 National College Player of the Year. The Houston Astros selected Berkman in the first round of the 1997 MLB Draft, and he debuted in MLB for the Astros in 1999. Berkman was one of the Astros' "Killer B's" in the mid-2000s, along with Jeff Bagwell, Carlos Beltran, Craig Biggio, and Derek Bell. The Astros traded Berkman to the Yankees at the 2010 trade deadline. He spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons with the Cardinals, and the 2013 season with the Rangers, then he decided to retire. He soon signed a one day contract with Houston to officially retire as an Astro. Berkman is a six-time MLB All-Star. He...

...that has been invested into "Hollywood" has definitely carved a permanent place in the books. So while having cartoons on that early Saturday morning that kids nowadays don't even get up to watch. It isn't necessarily a vital thing. Japan, a vastly smaller country with a different upbringing. They have never formed a movie industry that could compare anywhere near to American movies. Thailand, in recent years has become more prominent but otherwise, Eastern cultures just don't put out the volume nor quality that American films do. (I'm not saying Eastern movies aren't of good quality, I love tons of foreign films) However Japan did have something that was sparked by the creation of one of the most timeless characters in anime history. Astro Boy. In 1952, Osamu Tezuka created one of the most influential characters in animated history. As a young boy he was raised into a family that was rather well off. Luckily enough his family was well off enough that his mother would often bring him to the theater. (he watched Bambi, a lot) It was because of this, his interest and creativity grew and he would become known as "the God of Manga." Wars, they Affect Cartoons Too World War II was a difficult time for thousands, if not millions of lives. It was during this time that Tezuka-san took the opportunity to spread his manga. Correa’s goal is to buy two hundred beds for HCC. “I want to be able to help. God blessed me with talent to be able to play this game, and I’m sure there are lots of kids out there with plenty of talent that are not able to have a bed to rest. I want to be able to help them have a good night’s sleep” commented Carlos Correa. The HCC is always open to volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to help out. ...History of Professional Baseball in Texas Baseball is an immensely popular American game, played between two teams of nine players each. The basic implements used in the game are a leather-covered ball, wooden bats for hitting the ball, and gloves for catching it. It is played at its highest level in the United States and two Canadian cities, where 26 teams make up the American and National Leagues (each with two divisions, East and West). Combined, these leagues are called major-league (professional) baseball. Most players who reach the major leagues have worked their way up through Little League, scholastic, college, and minor-league ball. In the early 1800s Americans began playing baseball on informal teams, using local rules. By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's “national pastime”. Alexander Joy Cartwright of New York invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball. Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders becomes popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright formalized the modern rules of baseball. The first recorded baseball game in 1846 when Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club.
