Introduction Humanity has searched for life in our solar system and outside of it for years. Speculation supporting and against the probability of life on other planets has been a subject of debate in the scientific word and beyond. The probability of life mathematically is extremely low even when all the elements of life are present. Stages of evolution and development needed to create life take time. This time that it takes to develop is difficult to come by in the Universe according to some scientist. To understand what it takes to produce life scientist look to life as it evolved on Earth for an example on how this occurs.
Properties of Life on Earth Life refers to any living system that can maintain homeostasis, grow or have the capacity to do so, respond to environmental stimuli, reproduce in some manner, and adapt to environmental changes. Anything that can do these things is referred to as a living organism. Life on Earth consists of carbon forms. Carbon is a key component for all life that has naturally occurred on Earth. Molecules made of carbon bond with hydrogen, nitrogen, and mostly oxygen to make complex molecules. The substance carbon is in excess on Earth. It is easy for enzymes to move and manipulate carbon molecules due the size and the fact that they are lightweight. The most common elements found in living organisms on Earth are hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, sulfur, and carbon.
Possibilities of Extraterrestrial Life in Our Solar System The possibility of life within our solar system has been a question asked for years. Space exploration in the 1960s started to answer the question with no. Probes sent out to search for life have not returned any signs of it. Human life can be ruled out within our solar system due to the conditions on the planets and moons within the solar system being uninhabitable by humans. Scientists have included the smallest and simplest form of organisms and due to this definition the possibility of life within our solar system at the smallest level may be possible. Mars has a series of canals on its surface. This could be an indication that water was once on the planet or maybe still is deeper down. In fact, recent trips to Mars indicate ancient water flows and that ice is probable. The planet Mars also changes in color similar to the way Earth’s foliage changes during the seasons. Water from the ice caps is thought to flow and melt at times but this has not been proven. Europa is also promising.
Europa is a moon of Jupiter and has polar ice caps. Under the polar ice caps there appears to be a liquid ocean. The tidal forces of Jupiter are thought to keep the water from freezing. The Jovian moon of Jupiter has organic chemicals. These chemicals along with water and an oxygen atmosphere could possible harbor life. Scientist has discovered microbes living beneath Antarctica’s ice. This finding supported the idea that life could be on Europa (Olgethorpe, 2013).
Types of Stars with Life Bearing Planets Types of stars that could have life bearing planets would need to be main sequence stars similar to our sun. Stars that are too large burn too quickly and this does not give life time enough to form. This means that just because a planet may be in a favorable orbit around a star the temperature and life of the star is also important. The search for stars that would be suitable for life would be for stars to be larger than a red dwarf star as these type of stars would sterilize a planet’s atmosphere through solar flares, and smaller than a fast burning massive star. A star the similar in size to Earth would be ideal.

Humanity’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
In the 1960s the United States and Russia started sending probes into space in hopes of finding life on other planets. Today the desire has not altered. Fox News recently ran a report that life would be discovered by 2040 due to advances in detecting electromagnetic fields around distant stars and planets (Fox News, 2014). Missions to Mars trying to find microbial life have been sent out. Humans want to know that we are not alone. Space exploration to find other planets like ours is still out of reach but scientists are working on a way to travel through space to discover life or find a new home. Harvard University received funding to support the search for electromagnetic radiation or transmissions from civilizations on other worlds. Gamma ray bursts and lasers are thought as possible ways an alien civilization may be attempting to communicate with. Research to intercept the theorized messages in underway.
Assess the Possibilities of Extraterrestrial Life in the Universe To say that Earth is the only possible planet that can inhabit life out of an unpredictable amount of planets is a seemingly farfetched statement. Elements to support life are surely on other planets and even though Earth is seemingly special in its orbit around its sun other planets could have the same system. If water is present on other worlds and it surely is likelihood of life is increased. Others disagree about the likelihood of life other than Earth.
The math is not is support of finding life on other planets in the universe. According to Professor Andrew Watson, a scientist from the University of East Anglia, his model shows the probability of life to be low and intelligent life to be 0.1 percent in 4 million (science20.com, 2008). The issue is the time it takes for life to evolve and the lifespan of a planet and the sun. It’s simply difficult to add up. There are steps to the evolution of life that take time. Watson believes the Earth is in its final stages of evolution and this means that it would be astronomically difficult for intelligent life to emerge on other planets. He suggests that we are special in the Universe and are most likely alone.
Conclusion
Scientists will continue to search for planets that are similar to Earth or that could harbor life. The idea that we are not alone is one that drives scientists to reach for methods to see other planets. Probes have been sent from Earth in search of microbes elsewhere. So far, alien life has not been discovered but transmissions from space are still trying to be detected. Mathematically speaking the odds are not in our favor to discover intelligent life. We could find a planet similar to Earth with the ability to support life due to the atmosphere and distance from its sun and type of sun. This search is taking place and probably will continue as space is still very unknown to us.
