...Reason for Referral: T’Niq was referred for a psychoeducational reevaluation by the IEP team to assist in determining his continued eligibility as a student with a specific learning disability and to assess his current educational needs. Background Information: T’Niq is a 14 year, 7 month-old African American student in the 8th grade at Chocowinity Middle School. T’Niq attended Head Start for preschool. T’Niq previously met eligibility for services as a student with a developmental delay and received speech therapy. At the age of 7, T’Niq was diagnosed with central auditory processing disorder by an audiologist. T’Niq assessed by a school psychologist in the 3rd grade. His cognitive ability was measured using the RIAS. T’Niq’s overall intellectual ability was estimated to fall in the average range with a Composite Index of 94. His Verbal Intelligence Index score was 87 (below average), and his Nonverbal Intelligence score was 105 (average). Due to large discrepancy among these indices, the Comprehension Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, 2nd Edition (CTONI-2) was administered to give a better estimate of his overall cognitive abilities. Results of the CTONI-2 indicated a Full-Scale IQ score of 103 (average). Academic assessment with the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-3rd Edition (WIAT-III) indicated significant deficits in Reading Comprehension and Fluency, Basic Reading, Mathematics, and Math Fluency, relative to his nonverbal abilities. His scores on the Oral and Written...

...AT&T acquired Paradyne Corporation which developed and manufactured data communication equipment and provided sales and service. Paradyne’s management team shortly after the acquisition wanted to be recognized as a leader for quality and in customer satisfaction. All the team members would carry Values cards which exhibited the customer focus and quality. It had become an integrated part of the business and part of their daily work. The company started focusing on continuous improvements practices and rolled out programs that was a model of cooperative Customer-Supplier relations. The goal of this program was customer satisfaction. The company started a Customer Satisfaction Predictors as indicators of critical business process. These charts were displayed on the walls in their world wide facility showing monthly results, along with target and future goals. CSP was also tied to an annual bonus incentive plan for all team members. AT&T Paradyne's manufacturing cost system in 1990 was still based on the traditional approach of assigning materials and production overhead to products as percentage markups over materials cost and direct labor. The cost per part number of about $1,000 led to very high reported costs for low volume products with many unique components. Managers and engineers concurred that the $1,000 per part number cost was too simplistic and grossly over-costed products that had several minor variations. The enormous shifts in product costs were highly visible...

...Diamond T Ranch is a ranch located around Potter Creek in Bannock County, Idaho. The manager being J. Phillip Adams. Like most farms, Diamond T Ranch mostly deals with farming and ranching actions. Now, it was in 2001 when Adams wanted to fix a road that was crossing over Potter Creek. The reason why is because Diamond T Ranch had two fields with the creek cutting it in half. So, with the improvements on the road they could transfer equipment between both fields. The project ended up being called “Potter Creek Project”. Now, news of this project got out. The United States Army Corps of Engineers found out by Idaho Department of Water. The problem was that there was a potential Clean Water Act violation. There had been no permit given to Diamond T Ranch or Adams regarding this project, which was underway. So, Idaho Department of Water gave Adams a Notice of Violation and fee because of not having a permit. The permit dealt with the Stream Channel Protection Act, Idaho Code Ann. §§ 42-3801 to -3812. After Diamond T Ranch received the Notice of Violation, they decided to send in a “Joint Application for Permits. This would allow them to finish the stream changes that...

...Case Study #3: Type T Personalities Part 1: Read the following case study. FIVE. . .FOUR . . .THREE. . .TWO. . .ONE. . .SEE YA!” And Chance McGuire, 25, is airborne off a 650-ft. concrete dam in Northern California. In one second he falls 16 ft., in two seconds 63 ft., and after three seconds and 137 ft. he is flying at 65 m.p.h. He prays that his parachute will open facing away from the dam, that his canopy won’t collapse, that his toggles will be handy and that no ill wind will slam him back into the cold concrete. The chute snaps open, the sound ricocheting through the gorge like a gunshot, and McGuire is soaring, carving S turns into the air, swooping over a winding creek. When he lands, he is a speck on a path along the creek. He hurriedly packs his chute and then, clearly audible above the rushing water, lets out a war whoop that rises past those mortals still perched on the dam, past the commuters puttering by on the roadway, past even the hawks who circle the ravine. It is a cry of defiance, thanks and victory; he has survived another BASE jump. McGuire is a practitioner of what he calls the king of all extreme sports. BASE—an acronym for building, antenna, span (bridge) and earth (cliffs)—jumping has one of the sporting world’s highest fatality rates: in its 18-year history, 46 participants have been killed. Yet the sport has never been more popular, with more than a thousand jumpers in the U.S. and more seeking to get into it every day. It is an activity without...

...Categorical and Continuous Variables By SSG Huerta Aracely 18 July 2015 MHS 506 Biostatistics Categorical and Continuous Variables Variables and data can either represent measurements on some continuous scale, or they represent information about some categorical or discrete characteristics. Some examples of continuous variable are weight, height, and age. Categorical variables can be considered a person's gender, occupation, or marital status. Some variables could be considered both categorical and continuous variables. One example of this type of variable is a person's rating of someone else's attractiveness on a 4 point scale. Categorical Variables Categorical variables represent types of data which may be divided into groups. Examples of categorical variables are race, sex, age group, and educational level. While the latter two variables may also be considered in a numerical manner by using exact values for age and highest grade completed, it is often more informative to categorize such variables into a relatively small number of groups. Analysis of categorical data generally involves the use of data tables. A two samples or measures presents categorical data by counting the number of observations that fall into each group for two variables, one divided into rows and the other divided into columns. For example, a survey to identify their hair and eye color. Continuous Variables Much of the statistical analysis in medical research involves the analysis of continuous...

...Lecture 12: Introduction to Survival Analysis In many biomedical studies, the outcome variable is a survival time, or more generally a time to an event. We will describe some of the standard tools for analyzing survival data. Most studies of survival last a few years, and at completion many subjects may still be alive. For those individuals, the actual survival time is not known – all we know is how long they survived from their entry in the study. Similarly, certain individuals may drop out from the study or be lost to follow-up. Each of these cases is said to be censored, and the recorded time for such individuals is their time until the censoring event. Example: HPA staining for breast cancer survival We consider data from a retrospective study of 45 women who had surgery for breast cancer. Tumor cells, surgically removed from each woman, were classified according to the results of staining on a marker taken from the Roman snail, the Helix pomatia agglutinin (HPA). The marker binds to cancer cells associated with metastasis to nearby lymph nodes. Upon microscopic examination, the cancer cells stained with HPA are classified as positive, corresponding to a tumor with the potential for metastasis, or negative. It is of interest to determine the relationship of HPA staining and the survival of women with breast cancer. The survival times in months Ti and staining results (xi = 0 for negative and xi = 1 for positive) for the 45 women are presented in the following table. Also included...
