Although, every once and while, there is an incident reminding us of just how important they really are to us. In this case, the example was made out of the young NYPD Officer Artur Kasprzak. He was only 28 years old when he passed away a few weeks ago. Like a true hero would, Officer Kasprzak went down with bravery and courage. Artur was miraculously able to save six members of a family, including two men, ages 69 and 31. He was also able to rescue three women, ages 31, 56 and 68 and a 15-month-old boy unharmed up into his attic before the rapidly rising water was able to reach it. In doing so, he was able to save everybody else’s life but his own. His life was taken by the storm shortly after saving the lives of 12 others. Officer Artur Kasprzak died in the basement of his home on Doty Avenue in Staten Island around 7 p.m. In the eye of the storm, Officer Artur Kasprzak went out risking his life for the well-being of others. Throughout my time in the military, I have been instructed that courage is one of the fourteen leadership traits. Traits are qualities of thoughts and actions, which, if demonstrated in daily activities, help warriors earn the respect, confidence, and loyal cooperation of fellow warriors. There are two different kinds of courage. Moral courage is having the inner strength to stand up for what is right and to accept blame when something is your fault. The second is physical courage, which means that you can continue to function effectively when there is physical danger present. No matter the specific type of courage, both allow the warrior to remain calm and continue with the mission while recognizing fear, which is precisely what the young infantryman demonstrated in the poem and what Owen, personally demonstrated in combat during World War I. It is either constantly limiting people, resulting in some cowardice acts by the jury and Aunt Alexandra, or it is motivating them to do the honorable thing like Atticus and Jem. A single fear can greatly impact not only one’s life but an entire community and this is seen through the weakness or bravery of many of the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, demonstrating that our reputations are built on the way we handle our fears.
