An Attitude of Gratitude
The month of November always makes me think of gratitude because of the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many, many moons ago, I was estranged from my family on Thanksgiving. I was invited to share a meal at a women’s halfway house where I had volunteered at. I had a lovely time with these warm ladies and the food was wonderful. What has always stood out for me about that Thanksgiving is the end of the meal. You see, we went around the table, and each of us had to say what we were grateful for. I can’t remember what anyone or myself was grateful for, what I remember is the magical feeling that occurred.
An attitude of gratitude can change your life around. So funny, as I typed that I heard a song lyric from one of the Jesus

Cicely is mixture of Native Americans and European Americans. Joel is having a hard time understanding the Native American way of celebrating Thanksgiving. He is only looking at the situation from his point of view. Joel is being very ethnocentric in his beliefs about Thanksgiving. He is basing Thanksgiving off of his own culture and is not understanding of the other cultures around him. Joel in being inconsiderate of the Native American way of celebrating Thanksgiving. Their way of life is very different to him. The type of food, music, decoration, or for example the throwing of the tomato is differences between the two cultures. Joel is Ed's first victim and he is angered because in his words he is "definitely not white. The throwing of the tomato was Ed's way in saying season greetings to Joel. In the Native American...

My Family

...No Turkey for Thanksgiving “What do you mean we aren’t having turkey for Thanksgiving?” My family has become set in our ways when it comes to the food menus for holidays. You could say my family has created folkways for our holiday meals governing the “when and what to eat” -- concept. Folkways are defined by Joan Ferrante, as norms that apply to the mundane aspects or details of daily life (Ferrante 50). My family has developed many folkways around the holidays, so much so that if anyone tries to change them up it disrupts the norm of the holiday for us. The traditional family does everything by the book as far as preparing holiday meals but sometimes changes up the menu. In my family, we are so set in our way that if something is missing, it can cause drama and make for grumpy family members. My family has developed many folkways that are centered on the foods we eat for certain holiday meals, such as 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The typical 4th of July meal that my family prepares is barbequed hamburgers, hot dogs, potato and/or pasta salads, chips, dips, and fruit, usually cantaloupe and watermelon. Thanksgiving dinner consists of turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy and all the other traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Christmas dinner is usually prime rib, baked potatoes, salad and all things that go along with a prime rib dinner. Our most traditional Christmas meal is prime rib, and it would be really strange if that was not on...

Black Friday Madness

...Black Friday Madness In the essay “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization,” the author, Andrew Leonard, makes the argument that, “The out-of-control marketing and consumer insanity” (135) has taken over Thanksgiving and the days following it. Sadly, as consumers, we have forgotten what Thanksgiving is really all about. Marketing businesses have gone overboard brainwashing consumers with advertisements pumping them up to shop on Black Friday and the days that follow. Moreover, marketing businesses have caused the actions we see and hear about on Black Friday such as people being trampled, as consumers rush into stores to shop the sales, and are proof of this insanity. I strongly agree with Leonard’s arguments from “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization,” that it is time to take back Thanksgiving and end the craziness. First of all, Leonard points out that marketing and consumers have become out of control with all of the Black Friday sales. He gives examples of advertisements that are out of control. For example, “after the perky Stepford-wife shopper sings joyfully about how she’s ‘been in line since yesterday’ and how everybody’s going to Kohl’s at ‘midnight, midnight’ the ad ends with her observing, with a mild air of perturbance, that she ‘can’t get this darn song out of my head.’ Ladies and gentlemen, there’s your winner of the 2011 award for honesty in advertising” (135). This commercial is an attempt to brainwash consumers. He talks about “grown men screaming...

Black Friday: the People and the Craze

...whether it is for necessity or luxury. Our appetite for shopping dates back hundreds of years to the bazaars and markets of old times. Over the years, our fascination with shopping has increased and evolved. There are more smart and sales-conscious shoppers. As a result, the markets and vendors have evolved in order to accommodate the evolved shopper. It has resulted in the creation of mass markets, industrialization, and cultural attitudes. With the increasing amount of shoppers, and countless markets and vendors, companies are competing to gain shopper interest; they invent new products, create persuasive advertising, and offer sales on current merchandise. For companies, their largest revenue gain comes around the holidays. Therefore, they make big pushes for consumer sales on those designated days. However, a large portion of their revenue comes from one non-holiday, the man-made holiday, Black Friday. On this day, consumers spend more time and money in preparation than they do on their goods. There is a significant change in their attitudes and behavior; they become more competitive and more aggressive. This single day affects both producers and consumers. The combination of aggressive shoppers, sales, and limited quantities can be a recipe for chaos and disaster. To many shoppers, Black Friday spawns the beginning of the holiday sales. In an effort to save money and take advantage of the holiday sales, many shoppers participate in the Black Friday shopping events...

Traditions No More

...by celebrations or festivals. But as time passes, people are beginning to forego and abandon family traditions and values. While this global trend is becoming more and more evident, certain cultures still cling to old practices and attitudes. Although the portrayal of Chinese families in “My Grandmother’s Dumplings” is fairly accurate, Amy Ma fails to address how western and technology-centric views have altered people’s outlook on things like family gatherings, roles of family members, and attitude towards family members. Today, family gatherings no longer have meaning. In the story, Ma writes about the Spring Festival, which is, “The most important celebration of the year: It is a time to be with family, to visit friends and start life anew.” Ma describes her family traditions and how there’s a cultural meaning to the holidays. As an example of one of these rigid traditions, Ma states in her story that, “It was considered bad luck to do any work.” In contrast, many people today work on holidays such as Thanksgiving as others spend their holidays waiting in line on Black Friday rather than spending time with their family. The thirst for great deals has overshadowed the main idea of family bonding. This year, many people skipped Thanksgiving dinner and spending time with their families to camp out at stores to get shopping deals on Black Friday. Starting in the twentieth century, women have started to take a more active role outside of the household. Ma talks about the...

...A West and East Coast Interpretation of Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner The first cartoon of the Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner was created by Thomas Nast in 1869. His cartoon shows a positive attitude towards and exemplifies a more unified American identity. His cartoon however, was lampooned eight years later in 1877 by G.F Keller, whom clearly did not have the same vision on immigration as Nast did. Through the stereotypes, variety of people, quotes, and symbolism shown in both cartoons, the illustrators reveal “a direct contrast on two different interpretations coming from the American East and the West coast on the issue of immigration.” In Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner 1869, Thomas Nast shows ethnic diversity and proposes a vision of what could be a future possibility on political equality in the United States of America. The people seated at the dinner table come from all over the world, they are: Native American, German, French, Arab, British, African, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and Irish. In this image Nast subtly includes a portrait of the “Castle Garden.” The Castle Garden was a place where most immigrants were processed, this was similar to a home for the immigrant. Another strong tie to this image is the Fifteenth Amendment which is, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by ant state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” During this time period Mexicans were being...

Native American Oppression

...Native American Oppression Santucee Bell Case Western Reserve University Native American Oppression Introduction & Focal Population Imagine living in a world that consistently devalues your existence and is heavily populated with individuals who are quick to use and abuse your resources, but are slow to share the wealth that is accumulated from those resources. How would you feel? Unfortunately, certain populations do not have to visualize the disparity that is pictured above. This is because inequity is one of the most demoralizing social issues that plague America today. The worst thing about inequity is the fact that it continues to disproportionately burden individuals who are categorize as being minority in today’s society. This is especially true for the American Indian/Alaska Native population. This population continues to be one of the most vulnerable minority groups. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Overview of Race and Hispanic Origin: 2010 (2011), “American Indian or Alaska Native refer to a person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central American) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment” (Humes, Jones, & Ramirez, 2011, p. 3). 2,475,956 out of 308, 745,538 people that live in America are believed to be American Indian/Alaska Native, including those who report affiliations with tribes and South and Central American Indian groups (Humes et. al,, 2011, p. 4). Summary Of Ray Raphael's Founding Myth

...myth of the Founding Fathers is quite significant. According to historian G.Gordon he feels that the founders are being portrayed as boring and relaxed attitudes and are not being properly celebrated. Even Ray Raphael agrees with the statement from his book, “The American revolutionaries and framers of the Constitution are no longer being celebrated in the way they used to be.(Ray Raphael pg.160;161) Teaching the founding myths of our country can serve as a useful purpose. The purpose of the founding myths is not to lie to Americans about history, it is to shorten the facts of history. Teachers cannot teach a third grader what they teach college students about the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence. For the maturity level of the brain is not fully developed it would be hard for a student that young to comprehend the level of history they are being taught. Founding myths provide us a resource to give the younger ages of people an in depth shorter version of the whole story. The pilgrims having a “Thanksgiving” is a good example of another founding myth that I learned in school. The pilgrims that were actually Puritans, came to America in the winter of 1620 and were not prepared for that winter. The pilgrims also were not welcomed by friendly Wampanoag Indians. Instead of meeting to have the “first” Thanksgiving they instead went to meet each other to discuss the rights of the lands. In conclusion, the idea of founding myths cannot be completely controlled by...

Koppelman Belief

...As humans in this world we all have values, beliefs, and attitudes that we have developed throughout our lives. According to Koppelman (2011), values are a combination of attitudes which generate action, beliefs are inferences about reality, and attitudes are a cluster of related beliefs. Using Koppelman’s definitions of values, beliefs and attitudes, I would say some of my most important values now are that of honesty, positivity, loyalty, academic excellence, self-criticism and being the best just to name a few. My beliefs about reality is what I would call a spiritual one. One must do good to attain good which helps create my positive attitude about life and its circumstances. I come from a large city but grew up in the inner city where there is not much diversity at all. As a youth I was taught to accept certain values through different approaches stated by Koppelman(p.5-6), but I often questioned them feeling they were wrong and confused because of the inconsistency of them. With my values determining my choices as stated by Koppelman (p.3), my choices were not that of good ones. There was not much of a belief...

...Multicultural education relates to education and instruction designed for the cultures of several different races in an educational system. This approach to teaching and learning is based upon consensus building, respect, and fostering cultural pluralism within racial societies. Multicultural education acknowledges and incorporates positive racial idiosyncrasies into classroom atmospheres. Generally speaking, multicultural education is predicated on the principle of educational equity for all students, regardless of culture, and it strives to remove barriers to educational opportunities and success for students from different cultural backgrounds. In practice, educators may modify or eliminate educational policies, programs, materials, lessons, and instructional practices that are either discriminatory toward or insufficiently inclusive of diverse cultural perspectives. Multicultural education also assumes that the ways in which students learn and think are deeply influenced by their cultural identity and heritage, and that to teach culturally diverse students effectively requires educational approaches that value and recognize their cultural backgrounds. In this way, multicultural education aims to improve the learning and success of all students, particularly students from cultural groups that have been historically underrepresented or that suffer from lower educational achievement and attainment. Instructionally, multicultural education may entail the use of texts, materials...
