...The subjects of attraction and beauty are topics I have almost always found to be very curious and intriguing, so I was very excited to learn about them in this chapter. Before reading this chapter, I questioned whether our attraction to physical beauty is a disposition we are born with or if it is something that we become more responsive to due to the way our society promotes and idolizes it. I also wonder why people become so obsessed with this idea of physical beauty that they are willing to take extreme measures to obtain it. In this chapter, I was very surprised to learn that our attraction to beauty is not entirely the result of the culture we are raised in, but it is also due to our human nature. A study described in this chapter found that infants (too young to have been affected by culture’s idea of beauty)spent more time staring at attractive faces versus unattractive faces (p. 347).This supports the idea that we are born to favor physical beauty. But how do we classify what is beautiful? I think the idea, proposed by Judith Langlois and Lori Roggman, makes a lot of sense. They proposed that people tend to find “averaged” faces as attractive because they are more prototypical and familiar (p. 347). This made sense to me because in my introductory to psychology class, we learned that when people are asked to imagine an apple, they picture a red, shiny, flawless apple. We do this because it’s easier for our brain to take a shortcut by imagining an average of all...

...Interpersonal attraction can be defined as how and why we are attracted to individuals and the essential human necessitate to be with someone can be identified as the attraction between two individuals to form a relationship. Our social existence is dependent on the relationships we have with other people and these relationships are formed through key aspects like interpersonal attractions that are built from geographical, competence, reciprocal liking, similarity in beliefs and physical attractiveness. Having an attraction towards someone is what makes us choose who we interact with, and leads to friendships and romantic relationships. Psychologists have done numbers of studies over time to better understand why we are attracted to others and what factors make up our determinants of relationships. The component of being physically attracted to another person is a large degree when it comes to choosing relationships. It has been proven that people will generally interact with individuals who they find physically attractive. Now, thanks to westernized society, there are standards when determining which individuals are “good-looking” and they are often judged on their body mass index, waist to hip ratio, height and overall appearance. Although physical attractiveness is a key factor in the beginning stages of a relationship, it does tend to fade as relationships grow, and in turn, the above-mentioned factors start to play a larger role. Through physical and non-physical factors...

...Even though humans are not thought of as animals, we as a species still contain certain instincts that date back to the beginning of our existence. One of these instincts is the instinct to mate or to fall in love. So why are we attracted to certain people more so or less so than others? Attraction is thought to be based off of chemistry that occurs within the brain while others believe smell and other senses greatly influence our attraction. But that's not all attraction is based off of. Attraction is separated into two different types; physical, and sexual. Before you learn about those you need to learn what attraction is. So what really is attraction? Attraction is, according to the dictionary, the action or power of evoking interest, pleasure,...

...Clearly everyone has a different idea of “physical attraction” because everyone comes from different backgrounds and different cultures with different normative attractions. I imagine that if I did this study with many other males and many other females, I would get a wider variety of answers as to what they believe is “physically attractive” to another person. Gay and lesbian couples find different things appealing than do heterosexual couples. The man that Cindy describes as being attractive to another man could be seen as the “trouble-maker” or “bad boy”. Cindy described men liking large hands able to work, and also “toned muscles” and an “angled jaw structure”. All of these attributes could also be seen as being part of the “bad boy” look with the guy being unattainable or misunderstood, which makes them more attractive to some people. James, a heterosexual male, described men finding different things attractive that played into a completely different set of characteristics based upon stereotypes. When describing the perfect man, physically, James consistently said things such as “Can’t you just write ‘George Clooney,’ ‘Brad Pit,’ or ‘Ryan Reynolds’” because to other men, that is seen as the ideal body type and what everyone is attracted to. When Kathy described a man other men were attracted to, it described a typically athletic man, much like the ones we see at the Olympics. The man she pictured would be an Olympian: tall, toned muscles that steamed from working out and...

...Elaboration on construct: Chapter three breaks down attraction into three categories, physical, social attraction, and task attraction, I would like to focus on these three attractions throughout this construct, (McCrosky & McCain, 1974). Physical attraction is when somebody is drawn to one’s attire, hair, clothes, eyes and general appearance. Social attraction is when somebody is socially attracted to an individual based off of the social setting, however social attraction does not mean that somebody is physically attracted to them. The final attraction is task attraction, which means someone is desired to help achieve a goal, such as a career goal, financial goal, or group goal. An example of this would be a student wanting to partner with a fellow student who shows a broader knowledge of class material. Why this construct appeals to you (be specific): The big three (physical, social and task attraction) are something that I can relate to in my life and think of specific examples of when each has taken place and why....

...Attraction: Power of Love and Relationships Every so often the question arises, what is love? In antithesis to shared beliefs about attraction by many human beings it is not something that is mystical nor is it something that can hardly be assumed but there are lots of rules that oversee the manner. Love is a word that carries many meanings. Even though there are people who become attracted to others in the same way, still it occurs for various reasons with each individual. The paper that I am writing is about love and relationship. This paper will be addressing the factors of attraction, the human need to build bonds and relationships, and the three types of love which are, companionate, passionate, and compassionate. In the world that we live in and the many differences that we have with one another like race, backgrounds, and cultures love is the one constant that we all share in common. Love is what connects us to others all around the world. When you allow yourself to become connected with another human being you automatically set yourself up to be exposed to love. As the emotional human being that we are we learn to what love is and how to express it from the time that we are children during our childhood until we become adults and we begin to express love in our adulthood. On our journey from childhood to adulthood we learn that every relationship that we encounter is different from the one to the other. These relationships depend on the factors that are...

...Latisha Cook November 1, 2014 Ashford University Social Psychology Stephanie Anderson Have you ever been able to persuade someone into doing something? What about being persuaded by someone. You probably didn’t even know there were several different techniques when it comes to persuasion. Persuasion can be a powerful tool. It can be used in a positive way or a negative way. Knowing the characteristics of the persuader, the message that’s being persuaded and the characteristics of the audience can be a benefit to you. If you’re the one doing the persuasion you must have certain characteristics about yourself. People need to know that you know what you’re talking about and they can trust you. A communicator with expertise is one who appears to have knowledge and is able to communicate it (Feenstra, 2013). You can have all the expertise about something, but trustworthy is the most important. A trustworthy communicator is one we believe is giving us accurate information. (Feenstra, 2013). Another characteristic about being a “persuader” is physical attractiveness. Believe it or not people tend to go with someone who is more attractive than someone who is not. If you were going to buy a phone or even just to look at one you are more than likely to be persuaded by someone who is attractive. People respond more to people who are attractive due to the fact they would rather interact with them more. If you have ever seen hooters commercial or a billboard ad you will notice they’re...

...details. With a bit of luck they will agree and then with much anticipation, you wait and prepare for the event. How you initially meet a person will vary; it could be someone from your social circle, someone you meet by chance or even someone you have conversed with online. In every scenario, someone has caught your attention and you decide to put yourself “on the line” and ask them out. Not so in an arranged date. One strong advantage to the “arranged” or “blind date” is there is little to no “pre-date” effort on your part because the work is done for you by a third party. There is no chance that you may be turned down or have your pride hurt, because the date itself is a sure thing. Consequently, there is also no guarantee of any attraction on your part. You have no idea if any chemistry will exist, if you will have anything in common, and you must rely on someone else to know you very well. The date itself presents another set of issues. I find in a date of my own choosing there has usually been some previous conversation and therefore the “first date” discussion has the potential to be much more relaxed. Commonalities have been established and the initial...

Glasgow has reimaged itself using clever techniques for example to show its visitors and the local people themselves it treasures its history as once being part a world leader manufacture in ships, engineering and trade they left one Crain making it into a landmark and building a visitor attraction around it although this may sound boring to us many people find this amusing its one of which they have used this to encourage visitors to spend money locally as people go to visit this particular attraction it also pulls them towards local towns where they can look around new places. In 1980 Glasgow tried to reimage itself by flagship development and invested its money into 3 main cultural infrastructure to show visitors although its passionate about its history, Glasgow also wants to show it has a personality to it and to show off its creative side Burrell Gallery one of the largest attraction in Glasgow displays a range of art work from major artists this can conduct aspiring artists or those who are just curious to get to know what Glasgow is about to be inspired by the Burrell Gallery and want to see more of what Glasgow has in store.
