INTRODUCTION The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, established in the year 1965, offers a wide variety of degrees, both in the undergraduate and graduate level. Ever since, PLM produces competitive students that can cope up and excel with the changing needs of our society. Some of the courses that PLM offers are engineering courses such as chemical, civil, computer, electrical, electronics, mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Every year, about 500 freshmen enroll in these engineering courses. However, due to the complexity of the curriculum and other factors, a significant decrease in the number of engineering students are perceived every school year. This results to a low graduation rate. This phenomena reflects the existing condition that the whole country is facing, a high enrollment rate but low graduation rate. With that being stated, this study aims to determine the factors that affect the attrition rate of engineering students per degree program.
Supplementary factors to be determined includes both the intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors include the overall wellness of the student, health, skills and personality, time management and such. Moreover, extrinsic factors includes students’ behavior in interaction with the society like having a social life, financial problem, long travel time, and the like.
The aim of this study is to determine the major factors which greatly influenced the students and in the long run might cause further increase in attrition rate.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

General Statement of the Problem
It is alarming that four out of ten freshmen will have dropped out by the end of academic year. With the advancement of technology, more jobs requires technical skills yet only 12.26 percent of undergraduates in the Philippines are studying engineering and technology. The researchers observed a gradual decrease of engineering students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila for every year level. This high attrition rate was affected by several factors wherein they might be experiencing. For the remaining engineering students, vulnerability to this decline in number of iskolars can lead more to the aim of passing rather than learning.
Specific Statement of the Problem
• The General weighted average (GWA) grade, in relation to the new code, gave a deep impact on the performance of engineering students.
• Classroom environment, such as the number of students in a section, could mentally affect the number of declining engineering students. (To be added with supporting details)
• The high school preparations can affect the college standing of several engineering students.
• Family status, such as monthly income, can affect the increase in attrition rate of engineering students.
• Student’s Interest and goal can affect his or her attrition factor due to his/her own motivation to learning.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

General Objective:
The main objective of the study is to determine the factors affecting the decrease in the number of students in the different engineering courses after every school semester.
Specific Objectives: Particularly, the researchers aim to achieve the following objectives:
1. To determine the actual attrition rate of the engineering students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
2. To correlate the different parameters such as grades to the factors that affect the attrition rate of engineering students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila
3. To evaluate the engineering students’ performance through their grade.
4. To determine the complexity of engineering subjects by comparing the general mathematics grade and engineering mathematics grade.
5. To determine the intensity of each factor that affects the attrition rate of engineering students.
